“Si Pepe  man ang akong nahibal-an nga pangalan ana niya. Self employed  kuno na siya” tubag sa iyang asawa.
“Unsa may iyang trabaho, unsa man nang self employed?”
“Unsay sakit nga kanunay man na magbisita dinhi, himsog man, guwapo pa, ug dili katahaan ang iyang dagway.
“Good pm Len,” pangatahuran ni Pepe.
Way tubag si Lenny.
May buot siyang sutaon.

Talk of the Town / The Nahikalimtang Republic of Bohol
December 10, 2015, 03:24:07 PM

Ang Republic of Bohol
Ni Felix B. Daray

.          “Even today, the people of Bohol are misled to believe that the Republic of Bohol was during the Dagohoy Revolution. It was not. The Republic of Bohol with its separate constitution and elected officials was declared on June 11, 1899.” ---Jess Tirol
Sa  panahon sa rebulosyon  ang probinsiya sa Bohol sakop sa Gobierno de Canton de Visayas o Federal Government of the Visayas, diin ang headquarter didto sa Santa Barbara Iloilo.   .
Ang mga opisyales nga napili: Presidente, Don Bernabe Reyes; Bise Presidente, Don Salustiano Borja; Minister of Finance, Don Rafael Reyes; Minister of Justice, Don Eduardo Calceta; Minister of Police, Don Macario Sarmiento.
Daghang mga uncontested lots kay matod pa ni Judge Pedro Rich, “ lands were already registered even before the coming of the Americans, We know that during the Spanish  era only few parcels of lands were registeted.”
Ug dinhi mabugto ang  Republic of Bohol.
Matagbaw ka sa kaon kay eat all you can. Apan dili kini jagajaga kay tinuod nga adunay “Republic of Bohol”  kanhi nga mibarog sa panginahanglan ug katuyoan sa katawhang Bol-anon; nag-exist ug natala  sa kasaysayang PiIipinhon.
Sa pagkatinuod, haom pod kon tawgon nato nga  “The one and Only Republic of Bohol,” tungod kay talagsaon; way nahitabo nga susama niini dinhi sa Pilipinas, didto ra sa Bohol.

Mabuhi ang Probinsiya sa Bohol nga kanhi Republic of Bohol. Karong tuig 2015 maoy ika-116  nga kasumaran sa pagkamugna niini niadtong Hunyo 11, 1899.

Ang   Kasugiran  Bahin  sa  Ubi
Ni: Felix B. Daray
(Napatik sa Bisaya Magazine Sept. 3, 2014)

Ang patingog nga "I"

ORGANIC AMPALAYA IN THE BACKYARD

by : Felix B. Daray,

LIKE MANY PEOPLE , my favorite pastime is gardening. It is my relief from stress and source of joy, especially when it’s harvest time.

These days, I am growing organic ampalaya in my backyard. I enjoy sharing my harvest with my friends and neighbors. Likewise, I like to impart my little knowledge on it.
I suggest to those who plan to grow ampalaya in the backyard to plant it in an area that is exposed to sunlight. They should also plant the crop near a compost pit. Eight months after the biodegradable waste decomposed, sow two seeds near the pit.

As soon as the vines start growing and crawling up on the trellis, water the plant with rice wash or fish wash or meat wash .It would be best for the plants as they are very rich in nutrients and minerals.
To prevent infestation, bag the fruits with cellophane or old newsprints as soon as the flowers fall down. Doing so would hinder sucking insects and fruit flies to lay eggs on the young fruits.

I also inspect my ampalaya plants every morning to see if there are tiny holes or scratches on the leaves. These are indications that the plants are infested by pin worms or cutworms, which I remove manually .I also suggest that biodegradable waste be burned under the trellis in the early morning or late afternoon as the smoke will drive insects away.
In fact, I grow the native variety as it is resistant to pest. It is shorter to other cultivars but it has thicker pulp.

I start to harvest after 45 days. And for about 90 days, I pick one to two fruits every other day. Like most households, my family often cooks pinakbet or ampalaya con egg. And we don’t mind its bitter taste as we know it’s because ampalaya contains momordicin, a compound found to be effective in treating diabetes.

World Teachers' Day observed on Oct. 5
By Pia Lee-Brago (The Philippine Star) Updated September 26, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (1) View comments

MANILA, Philippines â€"  At 10:05 a.m. on Oct. 5, school bells all over the world would be sounded to signal the World Teachers’ Day celebration.

At this time, all teachers nationwide will take a break from their classroom duties to allow the performance of a unique classroom program.

In line with the Teachers’ Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day Celebration, the Department of Education (DepEd) has started conducting various activities to honor Filipino teachers nationwide.

The DepEd issued Memorandum 352 in joining the rest of the world in celebrating World Teachers’ Day on Oct.5.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro called on the support of all private and public elementary and secondary schools to give recognition to Filipino mentors who hold one of the biggest responsibilities in our society of molding the mind of future generations of Filipinos.

“Oct. 5 is a day to honor our teachers who play a critical role in guiding our children and in providing them life-long learning,” Luistro said.

To prepare for this special occasion, the Teachers’ Month Campaign (TMC) was established in 2008. It is spearheaded by the TMC Council of Leaders and Steering Committee composed of representatives from key business and academic institutions and private education organizations.

Government agencies also support the occasion to contribute to the growth and development of the teaching profession in the country, as well as to publicly express recognition and appreciation to teachers and mentors.

With the theme, “My Teacher, My Hero,” this year’s Teachers’ Month Campaign was launched during the Awarding Ceremony of the 2010 Metrobank Foundation’s Search for Outstanding Teachers on Sept. 3.

Luistro stressed the need to acknowledge the efforts of our modern-day heroes.

“Our teachers are the provider of education which is one of the basic rights of our children. And despite facing various obstacles that test their creativity and patience, they steadfastly stand by their commitment to give their mentoring best,” Luistro said.

“Our own version of TMC aims to generate widespread awareness and support for World Teachers’ Day. This occasion allows us to acknowledge the unique role teachers play in guiding families, strengthening societies and building nations,” Luistro said.

TMC will revitalize the image of teaching as a vocation by increasing public awareness on the value of teachers in Philippine society and national development.

It will also articulate the accessibility of a career in teaching by outlining available scholarship grants and school subsidy programs.

Through this celebration, various establishments would also give value added services or discounts to active and retired Filipino teachers.

As part of the activity, students are encouraged to say “Thank you” to at least one teacher who has made a difference in his/her life. Students are encouraged to write a letter or send a card to their teacher.

“Saying ‘thank you’ is just our simple way of giving back to our teachers who have touched our lives in one way or another. If we consider overseas Filipino workers as our modern-day heroes, we should also do the same for our teachers. We should have a ‘Mother’s Day’ type of celebration but on a grander scale,” Luistro said.

All DepEd divisions will mobilize the community and commercial establishments in paying tribute to teachers by giving them discounts or freebies or even special promos for teachers for a particular period during the month leading to Oct. 5.

All regional directors, schools division superintendents and school heads are encouraged to actively lead all activities for the Teachers’ Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day.

10 Ways to Fix Philippine Basic Education

Philippine education is in crisis and we need not argue that point. What we need is a president with a basic education agenda, willing to make the hard decisions. This is what needs to be done.

12-Year Basic Education Cycle

We need to add two years to our basic education. Those who can afford pay for up to fourteen years of schooling before university. Thus, their children are getting into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation. I want at least 12 years for our public school children to give them an even chance at succeeding.
My education team has designed a way to go from our current 10 years (6 elementary, 4 high school) to a K-12 system in five years starting SY 2011-12. Kindergarten (K) to Grade 12 is what the rest of the world gives their children.
I will expand the basic education cycle in this country from a short 10-year cycle to a globally-comparable 12 years before the end of the next administration (2016)

Universal Pre-schooling For All
All over the world, pre-schooling is given to all young children as the first year of basic education. We don’t solve this deficiency by renaming day care centers as pre-schools. We need to build a proper pre-school system and make this available to all children regardless of income.
All public school children (and all public schools) will have pre-schooling as their introduction to formal schooling by 2016.

Madaris Education As A Sub-system Within The Education System
Our Muslim brothers and sisters ask for an education system that respects their culture while providing a technically sound curriculum in English, Filipino, science and math. Madaris education with subjects in Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education can be integrated in our public school curriculum as additional subjects with the view to keeping our Muslim Filipino children in school.
I want a full basic education for ALL Muslim Filipino children anywhere in the country.

Technical Vocational Education As An Alternative Stream In Senior High School
Half our high school graduates want to work upon graduation but do not have enough technical education. We need to provide an education alternative to better prepare students for the world of work. Technical, vocational education must be re-introduced in our public high schools with trade tests and skills rating (TESDA or other acceptable work standards) as the final examination for students looking at HS as their terminal course.
I will re-introduce technical-vocational education in our public high schools to better link schooling to local industry needs and employment.

"Every Child a Reader" by Grade I
At the core of our children’s non-learning problems is the inability to read properly. By the end of the next administration (SY 2015-16), every child passing pre-school must be a reader by Grade 1.
Essential to this, we must build a library infrastructure in our schools, procure reading books (from our Philippine publishing industry to support local authors and publishers) and train our elementary teachers on how to teach reading.
By the end of the next administration, every child must be a reader by Grade 1.

Science And Math Proficiency
We need a strong science and math curriculum that starts as early as Grade 1 with instructional materials and properly trained elementary teachers. To build a culture for science and math, I will bring back the science and math clubs movement with elementary and high school science/math fairs.
I will rebuild the science and math infrastructure in schools so that we can produce more scientists, engineers, technicians, technologists and teachers in our universities so that this country can be more globally competitive in industry and manufacturing.

Assistance To Private Schools As Essential Partners In Basic Education
Private education must be a partner in producing quality education in the country. I intend to expand GASTPE (Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education) to a target of 1 million private HS students every year through education service contracting (ESC) while doing away with the wasteful education voucher system (EVS) of this administration.
I will expand government assistance to private education. A strong private school system will strengthen our public schools by providing parents an alternative and not adding to the overcrowding

Medium Of Instruction Rationalized
UNESCO has proven that young children learn best in their mother tongue before moving on to English in higher grades. I fully support the UNESCO-tried and tested formula on mother tongue instruction. From pre-school to Grade 3, we will use the mother tongue as the medium of instruction while teaching English and Filipino as subjects.
From Grades 4-6 (7), we will increasingly use English as the medium of instruction for science & math and Filipino for Araling Panlipunan (social studies). For High School, English should be the medium of instruction for science, math & English; Filipino for AP, Filipino and tech-voc education.
My view: We should become tri-lingual as a country.
•   Learn English well and connect to the World.
•   Learn Filipino well and connect to our country.
•   Retain your dialect and connect to your heritage.

Quality Textbooks
Poor quality textbooks have no place in our schools.
I will not tolerate poor textbook quality in our schools. Textbooks will be judged by three criteria: quality, better quality, and more quality.

Covenant With Local Governments To Build More Schools
We need to address our continuing classroom shortages. And if we are successful keeping more kids in school, the demand for more classrooms will be even greater. Here, we need a covenant with LGUs not only to build more classrooms but to establish more schools on land provided by LGUs. We do not need more overcrowded schools; we need more schools with smaller populations so that teachers, students, and parents can form a real learning community.
I will build more schools in areas where there are no public or private schools in a covenant with LGUs so that we can realize genuine education for all.
If we fix these ten concerns, we will fix most of the problems in our education system.
If we fix basic education, we fix the long-term problems of the country.
And if we fix the country’s problems, we will build a truly strong society we can proudly call the Philippines.

Dealing with your Facebook addiction

Prof says popular social networking site may be hazardous

By Danielle Pope, The Muse

VICTORIA (CUP) â€" Facebook has become an indispensable way to find old friends, schedule events, play games and even send virtual gifts. But if you’re doing more living online than off, it might be time to reassess. Many students are now seeing Facebook more as an addiction than a networking tool, and psychologists are starting to agree.

Are personal relationships taking a backseat to Facebook? Do you think about Facebook even when you’re offline? Do you use Facebook to escape problems or homework? Do you stay on Facebook longer than intended? Have you ever concealed Facebook use?

If you answered yes to any, you might be a borderline addict â€" no joke.

Frequent Facebook visits actually cause something psychologists refer to as intermittent reinforcement.

Notifications, messages and invites reward you with an unpredictable high, much like gambling. That anticipation can get dangerously addictive.

Rob Bedi, a registered psychologist and assistant professor at the University of Victoria, said that Internet addictions are common on university campuses, often helped by free Internet access, web-based assignments and unstructured blocks of time.

Bedi said there’s a difference between procrastination and addiction. If you’re losing assignment time to Facebook, though, that’s a problem.

The key may be as simple as diagnosing your triggers and changing your habits.

“Find out what’s missing from your life,” said Bedi. “Whether it’s having too much free time, not knowing anyone or just escaping, think about what made you resort to [Facebook], and what you could be doing instead.”

Bedi suggests keeping a log to track your Facebook usage. If you’re shocked by what you see, try the following: List your Facebook goals. Why did you originally sign up? Record what you actually do on Facebook. Make a Facebook schedule. Limit time to maintaining your original goals. Update your e-mail addresses to avoid relying on Facebook messages.

Bedi also suggested changing your password to something unfamiliar, including numbers, writing it on a piece of paper and placing it out of reach to make checking Facebook a chore. Repeat if necessary to curb your behaviour.

“This is not something you can quit cold turkey,” said Bedi. “While a cocaine addict can put down his drug and an alcoholic his drink, you can’t preach abstinence to a student society that functions on Internet usage. What you can do is practice control.”
For some people, talking with someone might be the answer. Many universities offer addiction counselling through student services.

If you’re not quite ready for that, you could join one of the 155 Facebook Addicts Anonymous groups on Facebook itself â€" but that might defeat the purpose.

Philippines Election to Go Ahead as Planned, Commission Says
May 05, 2010, 1:39 AM EDT

By Francisco Alcuaz Jr. and Clarissa Batino

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- The Philippines will vote for a new president as planned on May 10, Commission on Elections Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said, rejecting suggestions problems with the electronic ballot machines would cause a delay.

“Postponement is not an option,” Larrazabal said in a televised briefing in Manila today. “That’s not on the table.”

Stocks had their biggest drop in 11 months and bonds and the peso also fell after it was found that software in the vote- tallying programs was flawed and that thousands of chips needed to be replaced. While the Commission on Elections yesterday said it would be able to repair the faults in time, the National Movement for Free Elections, a poll-watching organization, and political analysts said it may be impossible.

“Investors are trimming their holdings and will be on the sidelines in the next couple of weeks” because of the uncertainty, said Lito Mercado, head of trading at Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. in Manila. “Whoever wins, the loser will think he has enough reason to protest.”

The nation is holding its first computerized elections to reduce cheating that occurred in tallying ballots by hand that took weeks. Namfrel and other groups have been warning that delayed delivery and inadequate testing of the machines raised the risk they will fail or produce erroneous results.

Commission on Elections Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said in a televised briefing today the country “will have elections on May 10” as scheduled.

Senator Benigno Aquino, who leads in the polls, last week said his supporters would take to the streets if “the people’s will is frustrated.”

Bond Yield

The yield on the 6.5 percent dollar-denominated bonds due January 2020 jumped 13 basis points to 5.411, the biggest rise in yields since Feb. 5 at 12:59 p.m. according to prices from ING Groep NV.

The cost of protecting Philippine bonds from default rose 14 basis points today to 182.5 points, the highest since March 30, according to prices from HSBC Holdings Plc.

The Philippine Stock Index had its biggest drop in more than nine months. The benchmark was down 3.5 percent at 3,176.85 at the 1 p.m. close in Manila.

The peso fell as much as 0.9 percent to 45.035 against the U.S. dollar, its weakest since April 5. .

“The whole automated process is already compromised,” said Bobby Tuazon, director of the Center for People Empowerment in Governance in Manila. “Many flash cards may not reach their destinations. Many areas will have to go manual again. More things will happen in the days leading up to the election.”

‘Hopeful’

President Gloria Arroyo’s spokesman Gary Olivar said the government is hopeful “technical issues will be resolved.” Agence France Presse earlier reported him as saying the elections may have to be delayed.

“Postponing elections never crossed our mind,” presidential adviser for political affairs Prospero Pichay said in a televised briefing today in Manila. “The palace, the executive body, is not entertaining the thought.”

Romulo Macalintal, an election lawyer who has worked for President Arroyo, said he has suggested a 15-day delay to the Commission on Elections. He clarified he wasn’t speaking for Arroyo.

“To ensure a clean, honest political exercise, there’s a need for the commission to see that everything is fixed,” he said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel.

Palace backpedals on option to postpone poll

By RG Cruz
ABS-CBN News

MANILA, Philippines â€" A spokesman of President Arroyo on Wednesday backpedaled on his earlier statement expressing support for a delay in the automated elections on Monday over glitches in preparations.

Deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar earlier told Agence France-Presse that the May 10 elections may need to be delayed because of technical problems with vote counting machines.

“I would imagine that the success of the automation… is more important than the timing. Nobody benefits from a foul up… if technical issues require more time and require us to delay, that is not an unreasonable judgment to make,” Olivar told AFP.

Olivar’s statements, coupled with the proposal of President Arroyo’s election lawyer to postpone the election for 15 days, was promptly rejected by the Commission on Elections who assured the public that the automated poll will push through next Monday.

During the daily afternoon briefing with Palace media, Olivar softened his stance and said Malacañang will defer to the Comelec’s decision on the matter.

“This started as a position of the President’s election lawyer, but ang posisyon ng palasyo is to defer to the Comelec. Even lawyers and IT experts seem to have different points of view on whether we can postpone or as a technical matter,” he told reporters.

He also said Arroyo’s election lawyer Romulo Macalintal was speaking for himself and not his client when he proposed that elections be postponed for 15 days.

“I’m not aware (na) nagpakita ng negative reaction si Pangulo…Macalintal’s comment is his statement as a lawyer. He has other clients. I don’t think he intended to speak for the president,” he said.

Presidential adviser on political affairs Prospero Pichay Jr. said the administration never wanted a delay or cancellation of the elections set on Monday.

“We haven’t really thought of postponing elections. It never crossed our mind that’s the stand of Malacañang. May election code. We are not entertaining thoughts of postponing the election. We’re anticipating elections will happen Monday,” he said.

He added: “We have to give Comelec a chance.”

Pichay and Olivar welcomed news that the Comelec has finally decided that elections will push through as scheduled on Monday.

Olivar also urged some groups to stop spreading talk about an alleged plot by President Arroyo to stay in power through the sabotage of elections.

Progressive partylist Anakpawis on Wednesday said all sectors and groups must unite to stop RAFAEL (Retain Arroyo through Failure of Elections) and NOEL (No Elections) scenarios being pushed by Malacañang.

“Sana tanggalin political noise at bangayan. Rafael â€" this is political. Noise na tingin namin muli na naman sinasangkot Pangulo. Hindi naman siya tumatakbo for national office,” he said.

Habal-habal Motorcycle
May 29th, 2008
by SELaplana.

“Habal” is a Bisaya term which means “the sexual (act) intercourse of animals” wherein the male animal enters the female animal by striding at the female’s back. However, in some areas in Visayas and Mindanao, the term “habal” is not only applicable to animals but to human also. In other words, “habal” literally means “sex”.

Now, “habal-habal” is the term used to call the motorcycle taxi because the driver and the passengers are in “habal” (animal) position. The normal motorcycle or motorbike is enough only for a passenger and a driver. But the “habal-habal” motorcycle can carry 2 to 8 passengers.

In some part of Mindanao, the “habal-habal” motorcycle has been installed with the wooden wings as shown in the photo below:

Habal-Habal Motorcycle

In general, it is still called “habal-habal” motorcycle, but some parts of the province of Surigao del sur call it “shuttle” or “space .shuttle”.

This habal-habal is used to transport cargoes and passengers in the most hinterland areas in Mindanao particularly in Davao Region.

Today is April 18, the first day of the Novena of the patron saint, Our Lady of the Village.

The adoption of the name Corella was made at the behest of Fray Jose Maria Cañabas, then the parish priest of Baclayon and endorsed by Fray Felix Gullen, the first Spanish priest. Corella was a name of a village in Navarra, Spain where this town’ patroness, Nuestra Señora del Villar showered miracles.

Who is Nuestra Senora del Villar? If we search Wikipedia, List of Roman Catholic Saint, we can not find such name .  Blessed Virgin Mary who made  apparitions in different places and canonized and titled as saints such as: Our Lady of Miraculous Medal, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and  Our Lady of Pillar.  And some other apparitions are not canonized by the Catholic Church like Our Lady of Medjugorge. There is no such miraculous  Blessed Virgin Mary's apparition in Navarra, Spain. If we look at the list of patron saints of all the churches in Bohol, we could not find any except in Corella.

How miraculous and saintfull is Our Lady of the Village is questionable!

Duterte finally names Aquino as his choice
Posted on 09 April 2010 by engkanta
Share30

DAVAO CITY â€" Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte finally identified Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino as his presidential bet after remaining tightlipped for so long.

The mayor earlier said his choice of vice presidential candidate is Senator Mar Roxas but refused to give a hint as to who his presidential choice was.

But in Friday’s yellow motorcade by the Liberal Party (LP) and Duterte’s Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, he was in a vehicle rigged with a stage along with Aquino, Roxas, and his daughter Sara, repeatedly saying over the microphone as the motorcade crawled amid screaming onlookers: “Aquino-Roxas ang among ginatabangan ni Inday. Walay laing rason, limpyo ang ilang pagkatawo.”

Hordes of people gathered by the streets holding yellow materials as they waited for the motorcade.

The pronouncement formally explains the reason for the many yellow ribbons that now adorn the city, including City Hall, City Council building, city offices, and city parks and structures. (Gigie Arcilla-Agtay/Jade C. Zaldivar/BOT)

Philippine Business News / Helmet Bill
April 10, 2010, 08:26:58 PM
Mandatory helmet bill passed into law (3:52 p.m.)

*MANILA -- After two years, the bill mandating all motorcycle drivers including back riders, to wear standard protective helmets has been enacted.

In a statement, principal author Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. expressed “victory” for Republic Act No. 10054 or the Mandatory Helmet Act, which President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law last March 23.

“The passage of this measure will not be fulfilled if not for the support of our motorcyclists and the motorcycle manufacturers and dealers who are aware of the danger of not wearing a helmet. I am also deeply grateful to my colleagues who unanimously voted for its approval, recognizing the importance of its urgent passage to address the alarming incidence of motorcycle-related accidents in the country,” Revilla said.

Under this law, all motorcycle riders - the driver and back rider - must wear standard protective helmets while driving motorcycles, whether on long or short drives, at any time of the day, in any type of road and highway.

Tricycle drivers are exempted from the law.

Revilla said he hopes that the law “will serve its purpose” of reducing the high number of serious injuries and deaths in motorcycle-related accidents. (Virgil Lopez/Sunn

Weird and Extreme / Church of Satan: Fact or Fantasy
April 04, 2010, 12:27:17 PM
Today, Satanism is the World's Most Notorious Religion. Church of Satan is the first above-ground organization in history openly dedicated to the acceptance of Man???s true nature???that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos which is permeated and motivated by the Dark Force which we call Satan. Over the course of time, Man has called this Force by many names, and it has been reviled by those whose very nature causes them to be separate from this fountainhead of existence. They live in obsessive envy of we who exist by flowing naturally with the dread Prince of Darkness. It is for this reason that individuals who resonate with Satan have always been an alien elite, often outsiders in cultures whose masses pursue solace in an external deity. We Satanists are our own Gods, and we are the explorers of the Left-Hand Path. We do not bow down before the myths and fictions of the desiccated spiritual followers of the Right-Hand Path. Business and Economy / Join Kiva
March 24, 2010, 10:45:31 PM
LET US JOIN KIVA AND BECOMES  A GOOD BORROWER

What is Kiva?

Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.

Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.

Pendo Luisi, 27 years old, borrowed $175 to open a cafe in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Kiva was born of the following beliefs:

People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way.

The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.

By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another.

Kiva promotes:
Dignity:   Kiva encourages partnership relationships as opposed to benefactor relationships. Partnership relationships are characterized by mutual dignity and respect.

Accountability:   Loans encourage more accountability than donations where repayment is not expected.

Transparency:   The Kiva website is an open platform where communication can flow freely around the world.

As of November 2009, Kiva has facilitated over $100 million in loans.

How Kiva Works1) It all starts with our Field Partners, which are microfinance institutions operating around the world. Our Field Partners approve and disburse a microloan to an entrepreneur in their community. They take a picture of the entrepreneur and write down the entrepreneur’s story.

2) The Field Partner uploads the entrepreneur’s profile to Kiva’s website. The profile, if it’s not in English, is translated by one of our hundreds of volunteer translators. After translation, the profile appears live on Kiva.org

3) Lenders like you browse the entrepreneurs’ profiles and choose someone to lend to, using PayPal or their credit cards.

4) Kiva provides the funds to our Field Partners by aggregating the loan funds from all contributing lenders. Most Field Partners then use the Kiva lender funds to backfill the loan they’ve already disbursed to the entrepreneur. Disbursals can happen up to 30 days before, or 30 days after a loan request is uploaded to the Kiva website.

5) Over time, the entrepreneur repays her loan. The Field Partner collects those repayments and lets Kiva know if a repayment was not made as scheduled. We give Field Partners the option to cover both currency losses and entrepreneur defaults.

To speed things up and to minimize the number and expense of wire transfers, Kiva works on a net billing system. This means that, for any given month, we subtract the amount of repayments that a Field Partner owes to Kiva lenders from the amount that a Field Partner fundraises for entrepreneurs on Kiva.

If the balance is positive, that means that the Field Partner has raised more than they need to repay, and we use those funds to credit your lender account with the repayments due to you. Tell me more

If the balance is negative, then the Field Partner has 30 days to send us a payment for the balance. As soon as we receive that payment, we use those funds to credit your lender account with the repayments due to you.

Repayment and other updates are posted on Kiva and emailed to lenders who wish to receive them.

6) When lenders get their money back, they can re-lend to another entrepreneur, donate their funds to Kiva (to cover operational expenses), or withdraw their funds to their PayPal accounts.

MGA TB MEMBERS, SEARCH KIVA.  HOW EASY TO GET LOAN?

Araw ng Dabaw 2010 Celebrates women and power
Written by: Ruivivar , Patmei Bello-
Tuesday, 16 February 2010

YES, despite the crisis and our preoccupation with the 2010 elections, Davaoeños will certainly celebrate the 73rd Charter Anniversary of our beloved City of Davao on March 16, 2010.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has asked Mr. Jaime Jose Y. Aboitiz, President and CEO of Davao Light & Power Company (DLPC), to be his private sector Co-Chair for the 73rd Araw ng Dabaw celebration, and Mr. Aboitiz has accepted and mobilized DLPC to give its full support.
This year’s celebration theme is “Katatagan ay Kapangyarihan: Pagpapatibay at Pagdiriwang!” (Stability is Power: Affirmation and Celebration), which shall affirm and celebrate the various sources of stability that give Davao power and empower its diverse peoples to make the city what it is today and shape what it will be in the future.

March also being International Women’s Month, this year’s Araw ng Dabaw will also pay tribute to the strong and empowered women of Davao City and celebrate its many milestones in mainstreaming gender issues and concerns in all aspects and levels of development. After all, women comprise half of the population, we must manage half of the power.  Certainly, women are an important resource and source of stability in Davao City. Mayor Duterte wants the celebration highlights this year packed into three days only compared to seven to five days in other celebrations in the past. So all major events will happen between March 14 to 16, 2010. General Topic / Human Cloning
January 26, 2010, 03:21:14 PM
Human cloning - part two - why investors don't like cloning

Human cloning means designer people with known pedigree. This is the ultimate pedigree child. Cloning of human embryos has already been achieved - see below. Successful cloning of adults has been announced but not yet proven. It is only a matter of time, months or a very few years before human cloning is a reality for anyone with enough cash, willing to take the risks of a hideously malformed or emotionally damaged child.

Human cloning of a baby could have happened more than once last year - how would you know? Human cloning headlines are usually at least two years behind what's really going on - see below. What you really need to be asking is what scientists will be saying in press conferences in 2010 about their human cloning research, talking about work that they actually did in 2005.

What follows was written in 2003 and is important background on human cloning research

One thing is beyond any doubt: despite huge risks, and widespread public condemnation, by January 2001, many different scientists across the world were already locked in a race to clone the first human, as a baby for TV cameras.

Huge amounts of money are at stake in human cloning research. Teams have announced their aim, many people have come forward with offers of eggs, their own adult cells and money - and the US still has no laws to prevent human cloning from happening, nor do most other countries of the world.

The headlines above first came nearer reality on 23 Feb 1997 when world media reported the existence of Dolly the sheep: cloned from an adult. I had predicted the Dolly headline in 1993, in my book The Genetic Revolution. A few days later, the Edinburgh scientists admitted that frozen cells had been used to make Dolly, having seemed to deny it when the story first broke. That meant that animals (and in theory people) could be cloned after death. US scientists also revealed that they had cloned monkeys (using cells from an embryo). The British scientist responsible for Dolly admitted to a Parliamentary committee (6 March 1997) that human cloning could be possible in two to three years (after vigorous denials by many embryologists). I had been saying the same from the moment the story broke.
Made in America, born elsewhere

President Clinton launched an immediate 90 day report into the implications for human cloning as soon as the news of Dolly became public. Norway did the same while the EC urgently considered a response. The news on human cloning experiments exposed the fact that most nations of the world had little or no legislation covering genetic engineering. This has to change.

Clinton announced in May 1997 that human cloning should be banned. He was warmly applauded. However, what he went on to say was that the proposed ban was only for 5 years, and that nuclear transfer experiments (basic human cloning technique) could continue, though not with government money. In other words "Clones may be made, but not born for the next five years". However, Clinton could not even deliver - his own partial ban was thrown out by Congress. Meanwhile UK Parliament in January 2001 made experimental creation of human clones legal, so long as the embryos were made for medical research and destroyed before implantation.

Richard Seed said over two years ago that he was "a few weeks" from his human cloning experiments. He has attracted money and people. I've met him and debated with him on TV. He has been followed by Clonaid, a new human cloning organisation with cash and 300 couples ready to start. Dr Seed declared that he cannot be stopped from human cloning under current US law, and if human cloning laws are changed he will move the work to Mexico. He has announced a human cloning lab for Japan - purchase of land and $15 million backing. Every week there is another mammal cloning headline. Dolly the sheep gave birth to a healthy lamb, Bonny. In July 1998 came rumours of a cloned mouse, Mickey, created by Dr Ryuzo Yanagimachi, University of Hawaii. In November 1998, we heard that Japanese scientists had already cloned cows from milk - cells in the milk. If you want to see the staggering pace of human cloning announcements - check out our human cloning news summary.

As I say, remember that what you hear today is not what is going on now, its already old history. And some scientists in the field are determined to keep it that way. Hence you only knew about Dolly's creation when she was already 7 months old - more on this below. Another example of secrecy was the extraordinary announcement by Advanced Cell Technology, Massachusetts on 12 November 1998 that three years previously they managed to take the nucleus from a human cell from Dr Jose Cibelli and insert it into a cows egg. The human genes activated and the egg began to divide. They destroyed it at the 32 cell stage, well on the way to becoming a Dr Cibelli's clone. This research was more spectacular than Dolly, yet carried out years earlier with a total news blackout. More recently in March 2001 Australian scientists said they had been carrying on similar secret human cloning experiments using human cells and pig eggs for over two years. What I want to know is this: what are they doing today that they won't be talking about till 2002 or 2003 or perhaps 2004?
The public has a right to know

It has been good to see truth about cloning begin to prevail, after deliberate under-playing of the news by so-called "experts" in a damage limitation exercise to prevent destruction of their research grants by public demand. They have been scared by public reaction. They think the public has no real understanding and so these matters should be kept from the public eye, discussed only by scientists and ethical committees. But these committees are dominated by the industry.

What will be the next human cloning headline? You can be sure that we will see a continuous stream of new revelations now that has become politically acceptable for scientists to come out of the woodwork and talk about these things.
"I want to clone my dad and have him as a baby"

Just before the announcement of Dolly the sheep, someone e-mailed me asking if she could clone her dead father. The answer of course is yes, so long as living cells have been kept in culture, taken from before death, or have been frozen in an appropriate manner. She is also willing to be cloned herself. These are important issues, not science fiction. I had another e-mail from a man offering to volunteer to be cloned. Scott writes "Do you need any volunteers for human cloning experiments?"

Let me make it absolutely clear that I am opposed to human cloning on ethical grounds. It is open to gross abuse. It undermines the uniqueness of the individual and raises profound religious and ethical questions.
Three reasons not to clone: (Press here for more)

1. Health risks from mutation of genes - an abnomal baby would be a nightmare come true. Huge risks of mutations - of a monster. Just look at what has happened in animal experiments. You can't always spot the mutations or developmental abnormalities by gene testing, nor by ultrasound scans, until after birth.

2. Emotional risks - child grows up knowing her mother is her sister, her grandmother is her mother. Every time her mother looks at her she is seeing herself growing up. Unbearable emotional pressures on a teenager trying to establish his or her identity. What happens to a marriage when the "father" sees his wife's clone grow up into the exact replica (by appearance) of the beautiful 18 year old he fell in love with 35 years ago? A sexual relationship would of course be with his wife's twin, no incest involved technically.

3. Risk of abuse of the technology - see below.
Reasons people may want human cloning:

Reasons why people want human cloning may be rational or irrational. That is not the point. The fact is that a recent US survey conducted by CNN found that 6% of US citizens think human cloning could be quite a good idea. Judging by people who leave comments on this website, the reasons may vary widely. Here are a few:

    *
Recover someone who was loved - a twin, a reminder.
    *
Infertility - rather than use donated sperm and eggs, why not use a cell of your own to give birth to "yourself", your own twin?
    *
Eugenics - an attempt to improve the human race.
    *
Megalomania - a desire to reproduce one's own qualities.
    *
Spare parts - using a cell from your own body to duplicate yourself. Take tissue e.g. bone marrow, then offer baby for adoption.
    *
      Assisting medical research
    *

[edit] Early life, education and religious career
Arroyo was born on Feb. 17, 1884, in Molo, Iloilo to Ignacio Arroyo and Doña Maria Pidal as the only daughter of three children. Her 2 brothers were Jose Maria Arroyo and Mariano Arroyo. Jose became a senator in 1919 while Mariano was governor of Iloilo in 1928. Senator Arroyo and spouse Jesusa Lacson from Negros Occidental had 7 children, one of whom was Ignacio Arroyo (father of Philippine First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo).

She joined the Manila Beaterio de Sta. Catalina and to become nun on January 3, 1914. She taught at the Beaterio of Manila and in Lingayen.

Despite her wealthy upbringing, Arroyo chose a life of poverty and devoted her life with ministry to the poor. She became a nun in the Dominican Order. [1] With the help of two other Dominican nuns, Arroyo would eventually create the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary, a Filipino congregation, on February 18, 1927. Elected the First Superioress General of the Congregation at the Congregation's First General Chapter of January 3-6, 1953, she had 32 years of holy service. Madre Sayong or Madre Maestra died on June 14, 1957, in the odor of sanctity.

Today, with a membership of over 250, the congregation runs multiple schools, colleges and retreat houses. [1] She is also a distant relative of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo. [1]. Her congregation has professes sisters in the Archdioceses of Capiz, Jaro, Manila and the Dioceses of Bacolod, Imus, Mati, San Jose de Antique and Tagum and in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, USA, Diocese of Honolulu, Hawaii, Diocese of Chalan Kanoa and Diocese of Ngong, Kenya in East Africa and Rome, Italy.[2]

[edit] Beatification Process
Arroyo is currently in consideration for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church with several miracles being investigated which are attributable to her. [1].

[edit] Mother Rosario Arroyo Commission
Sister Leonor Gerlito, member of the Mother Rosario Arroyo Commission, stated on June 17, 2008 (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines), that: "We actually launched our movement in 2004 but it was only recently when we were assisted by Vatican City-based Fr. Sam Silloriquez, who talked with Mother Visitation Alecto, former superior general and now head of the Commission."

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines stated that "Mother Rosario's congregation said she personified optimism and unfaltering trust in God's loving providence and added through her unconditional self-giving, she enriched others. Despite her family background, she was a great lover of poverty and did much to alleviate the miseries of the poor, materially and spiritually. She was well known for her assiduous mortifications, unceasing prayers and purity of life. Rosario Arroyo Porta, closest living relative, daughter of Gov. Mariano Arroyo of Molo, Iloilo City.Last Oct 7,2008 a mass was held in Dominican sisters convent in Ilo-ilo city which was attended by members of Porta family (Rosario A.Porta and family). Mariano and Delores Arroyo had three children: Manuel Arroyo, Remages Legaspi, and Mariquita Arroyo. Mariquita is the oldest living relative to Mother Rosario (her niece). Mariquita resides in Indiana, USA and has two children, grand niece to Mother Rosario, Anne Walsh and grand nephew to Mother Rosario, Chris Tuell of Indiana, USA. Delores Arroyo is also buried at the convent along with Mother Rosario.

Pointers on Applying Flower Inducer to Mango Trees
   by Felix B. Daray

Simultaneous fruiting is possible nowadays with flower inducer. By spraying it to mango trees, not just more, but bigger fruits are produced.

Potassium nitrate is the generic name of chemical flower inducer in mango, and the chemical symbol for this compound is or KNO;. It contains 13% nitrogen and 46% potash, hence it is also called 13-0-46. KNO supplies the potassium requirement of the tree and in the process, induces flowering.

Another flower inducer used, nowadays is calcium nitrate (CaN). It contains 45% calcium and 15% nitrogen. It is affordable, yet the effect is just the same.

Here are some pointers on applying flower inducer to mango trees.

1. Flowering and fruiting vary, depending on the variety.
2. Chemical flower inducers should not be used under the following circumstances:

• when the tree is 10 years old or below
• when the leaves and buds are young
• when the tree is weak and sickly
• during rainy days

3. High dosage of flower inducer should be applied when the tree is healthy and starting to mature, the leaves and buds are maturing, and the weather is cloudy.
4. Use low dosage of flower inducer (1% - 2% of KNO;) when the tree is already mature, healthy, and has dormant buds; the leaves and buds are mature; and the weather is sunny.
5. Induce flowering once a year. However, if it did not flush during the fruiting time, spray again after harvest, but do not expect full bloom.
6. Spraying should be done when the tree and leaves are dry, and with no expected rain within the next six hours.
7. Use Apsa-80 as sticker.
8. Using the same formulation, spray again after two days to hasten the emergence of flowers.
9. From flowering to harvest, it takes 7 to 8 months to rejuvenate and accumulate nutrients for the next fruiting season.
10. Trees that have yielded in the previous season but have not flushed can be induced, but do not expect a full bloom.

In spraying potassium nitrate, prepare a 1% - 3% solution, depending on the condition of the tree. Or, mix 4 kilos per 200 liters of water. Spray it onto the leaves and branches, totally wetting but not dripping. Spray early in the morning (from sunrise to 9:00 a.m.) or late in the afternoon (from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.) to prevent leaf burning due to sunlight. In applying CaN, one one hand, mix 5 kilos to 200 liters of water.

After 12 days, when the flowers start to emerge, spray pesticide and fungicide. The flowers would be fully opened after 20 days. At this time, the flowers are susceptible to pest, so inspect the plants every day to see if there are damages caused by insects, and spray appropriate pesticide.

Applying flower inducer at the right time and amount indeed results in significant increase in production. One mango farmer in San Roque, Digos City, Davao del Sur who uses inducer is Arnold Nebria. In fact he is the first one in San Roque who has succeeded in mango farming. At present, he grosses an average of PI million every harvest. Also applying inducer is Victorino Ramos, and in September 2008 this 70-year-old farmer and councilman of San Roque has earned almost P1 million.

In the same year, I grossed P960,000 from my 2-hectare lot planted to grafted Cebu Mango; and it was the biggest income that I ever earned in my entire life! So consider the said tips on using flower inducer, and you, too, would have a hefty profit.

Growing Pechay in Pots

Gardening has always been a favorite pastime of many people including me. That’s simply because it’s a relief from stress and brings joy, especially when it’s harvest time.

I am growing pechay organically in my backyard. I have 15 pots planted to pechay, and I enjoy sharing my harvest with my friends and neighbors. Likewise, I want to share my little knowledge on backyard gardening for the benefit of those who are interested in it, too.

I suggest to those who are planning to establish a garden to select an area that is exposed to sunlight and is near the kitchen. With the garden being one stone’s throw away from the kitchen, it would be convenient to water the crops with rice wash or with fish or meat wash, which are all good for the plants as these contain nutrients and minerals. Preventing infestation would be easy, too, as it would be easy to see
from the kitchen window the condition of the crops.

I also suggest that they construct a stand to elevate the pots to maximize use of space. Fill the pots with humus soil or compost. Plant one seed in small pots and two in bigger pots through direct seeding. When the pechay begins to sprout, start to water the same with either rice wash or fish- wash or meat wash.

As for pest management, I inspect my pechay plants every morning to see if there are tiny holes or scratches on the leaves. These are indications that the plants are infested with small pin worms or cutworms. I remove these greenish black worms using a stick and puller.

I start to harvest after 30 days. I do not uproot pechay plants until these start flowering. Pechay grow up to four months. Replace the soil in the pots with new garden soil and replant again.

Corella - Bohol / Corellahanon are still proud of him.
September 01, 2009, 12:40:46 PM
We, the Corellahanon are proud of AJ Banal's  victory, Congrats, we are proud of you............, bisag tua na ka karon sa Cebu magpuyo.

CEBU boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer praised the successful performance of AJ “Bazooka” Banal in last Sunday’s “Island Assault” boxing event in Hawaii but also pointed out that there were several flaws the Cebuano boxer needs to work on.

In Banal’s (20-1-1, 6KOs) unanimous decision over Mexican Jose Angel Beranza (32-16-2, 25KOs), Aldeguer observed that there were times in the match when he was too cautious.

Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family

Aldeguer said there were rounds, especially in the later parts when Banal could have knocked out Banal but the Ermita, Cebu boxer failed to capitalize on them.

“He was pacing himself too much. There were rounds when he could have sent the Mexican down but he was too cautious. He did not attack as much as he should have,” said Aldeguer.

“I’ll give credit to the Mexican, he’s tough. If it were another boxer, he could have been knocked down,” he added.

Aldeguer said he was still happy with the outcome of the fight especially since he saw that Banal has learned to be more patient unlike in the past when he used up all his energy in the early rounds in the hopes of an early knock down.

“We are contented with the result because AJ learned to be patient. He’s more in the learning stage right now,” Aldeguer added.

Banal’s patience has always been one of the boxer’s weak points, which his trainors at the ALA Stable had been working on. His impatience caused his inability to sustain his energy in his fight against Panamanian Rafael Concepcion in their WBA interim super flyweight title bout last year at the Cebu Coliseum.

In that match, Banal did not have enough patience to pace himself; he gave out his strength in the early rounds until he ran out of power that led to his 10th round TKO loss.

Aldeguer also added that they plan to schedule Banal for another fight this November here in Cebu before he embarks on a bigger campaign in the US. ESL of Sun.Star SuperBalita

Hand-washing marks opening of schools today

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"“Lupang Hinirang,” then “Happy Birthday.”

After Monday’s flag ceremony, one of the first things some 2 million public school students of Metro Manila are going to learn is proper hand-washing to avoid the dreaded A(H1N1) flu virus.

“I have issued a memo to our 682 public schools in Metro to hold, if possible, simultaneous exercises in the morning on how to do proper hand-washing,” said Teresita Domalanta, Department of Education (DepEd) director for the National Capital Region.

The Department of Health (DoH) has advised people to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water and if possible, for as long as a “Happy Birthday” song.

Students would be instructed to wash their hands upon reaching school, before and after meals, and after interacting with other people, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus told reporters Sunday at the Teachers’ Camp in Baguio City.

As long as water was flowing, students of public and private schools around the country should be protected from the swine flu virus, he said.

But if schools are not able to guarantee clean running water, there is an alternative.

Lapus said used bottled water containers could be filled and strung upside down in a row inside school toilets. The plastic bottle caps would be punctured to allow water to drip, so students could wash their hands.

A P1-billion allocation to establish water supply and fix school toilets was one of the DepEd’s weapons against the disease, he said, so reports confirming that 16 Filipinos have been infected with the virus should not alarm parents. Two of these patients are in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

BACKYARD GARDENING

      by: Felix B. Daray

Backyard gardening relieves me of some stress and there is also joy and fun  “harvesting” the fruits from your extra time. I am experimenting with organic farming meaning. I don’t use pesticides and fertilizers.Select a space near your kitchen where it has direct sunlight anytime during  the day. Make a stand and elevate  a little higher. Fill the pots with humus soil or any soil from your compost pit. Plants two  pechay seeds for bigger pots and one seed for smaller pots by direct seeding. When the seeds starts sprouting, start watering the rice washed , (kinilis) and fish and meat washed, (hinugas) from your from kitchen. They contain nutrients and minerals good for the plants.

Early in the morning, I inspect if there are  tiny holes or scratches on the leaves. If there are, your leaves are infested with small pin worms or cutworms. With the use of a stick and a puller, I  removed all the worms. Their  greenish black color is so visible with our eyes. It is so fun looking, then killing  the crawling  worms. I inspect all the pechay plants to avoid serious infestation.

After 30 days, I start harvesting my pechay. I harvest two to three leaves per plants or depends on the kitchen needs. Do not uproot the plants. Pechay will grow  up to four months. When you see  flowers in the bud, its time to uproot the pechay and replace the pot with new humus soil. Replant it again. This is called soil disposable method of farming.

My potted pechay plants are placed near the kitchen so that easy  to water the rice washed , the  fish and meat washed . It is so accessible to  other members of the family to see if there are worms infesting the leaves. They also enjoy removing the  worms. They say, “ hi. .hi…hi. .hi…”  and giggle as they pull the worms.  Pechay plants are not infested with virus diseases.

With my fifteen potted pechay ,  I can harvest fresh leaves free from pesticide contamination all the year round. Sometimes, I share my harvest to the friends and neighbor.

We never grew tired of eating “pechay” during meals for about a week - pechay with corned beef, pechay with sardines, pechay with ground meat, tinulang isda with pechay and etc.

Backyard gardening  is now my pastime, early  in the morning and the late afternoon. It is pesticide  and fertilizer free. Generally, it’s environmental.

Brigada Eskwela saves DepEd P5.7B

By Philip Tubeza
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"The "bayanihan spirit" saved the Department of Education P5.7 billion in repair costs last year, according to Secretary Jesli Lapus.

DepEd reported that it saved all that money because more than five million Filipinos volunteered to repair and clean up the schools in their communities, Lapus said in a statement.

Lapus said this was the result of the department’s Brigada Eskwela program, which mobilizes local governments, non-government associations and private businesses to lend a hand in the upkeep of schools in time for the school opening in June.

Lapus said the program achieved results in all 44,619 school communities in 2008, up from only 31 percent in 2003

The savings amounted to P2.9 billion worth of community maintenance and operating costs; P1.6 billion worth of volunteer time and labor man-hours; and P1.2 billion worth of donations-in-kind.

Lapus announced awards for 96 schools that mobilized the biggest number of individuals and organizations for the repair of schools.

For each of the 16 regions, three elementary schools and three secondary schools were selected as awardees, which were also categorized according to size.

DepEd also gave “hall of fame” awards to 16 schools that have topped the awards for three consecutive years.

Brigada Eskwela is spearheaded by DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program which facilitates DepEd’s partnership with the private sector.

Lapus lauded school principals whom he described as school managers who “can create a ripple effect of the Bayanihan spirit in the community.”

“Engage all sectors of the community -- local businesses, the parents, the local government units and non-government organizations. Inform them of your current efforts and needs,” Lapus said.

The Philippines has been criticized for not allocating bigger resources to education.

HISTORY:
.
On   Sept 9, 1991, four believers: Aldrin Lobo, Felix Daray, Federico Sumay and Olegario Banac Sr. gathered at his  residence with his family for a first Sunday worship.  We feel  and led by the Holy Spirit and committed ourselves to spread the gospel to all the world. From that time on up to Dec. 27, 1998,we were a  mission of County Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Paul Magness, the pastor until we became an organized church into the local   new testament church.

In 1995, when Federico Sumay graduated from the seminary  of the   Missionary Baptist Church, Davao City,  he assumed as full time  pastor. Since that time , he has been a dedicated and energetic pastor, well loved and respected by its member and friends. With good harmonious relations, fellowships and other church services, we win more believers which were good tithers and givers. Thus, with the church income, we started the construction of the church building in 1998.

In 2000, we transferred although construction was  still going on. Finally, in  2002 it was completed and  stood as living legacy of our hardships and sacrifices and blessings from the Lord.  It stood now, the FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF DIGOS CITY which had linkage to the church founded by Jesus Christ .

COMMITMENT:

â€œObey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you

Bible Study / Original sin or Innocence

PERCEPTIONS OF SIN: CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM

First of all, it is necessary to understand what we mean by “sin”. This is important, because different religious communities have different perceptions about sin.
Sin is a concept used primarily in the Abrahamic religions [Judaism, Christianity, and Islam] describing a transgression against the will of God, which calls for repentance and at times penance.

Judaism regards the breaking of the commandments or the Jewish Law to be a sin. The Jews believe that all people sin at various points in their lives, and hold that the divine justice is tempered with divine mercy.

According to them, a state of sin does not condemn a person to damnation; only one or two truly grievous sins lead to anything like the Christian idea of hell. Their liturgy of “the Days of Awe” states that prayer, repentance and charity are the means of atonement for sin.

As for Protestant Christians use the term ‘sin’ primarily to refer to what they see as “humanity's inherently sinful nature”. This is while the Catholics mostly use the word for actual instances of sin, calling “the sinful nature of humans” as “concupiscence”, in the sense of ‘an innate tendency of human beings to do evil’.

Most denominations of Christianity hold the belief that the sin of Adam and Eve's disobedience to God is passed on to their descendants and thus the whole of mankind is accursed with that Original Sin, from which no salvation is possible unless one believes in the atoning death on the cross of the Son of God.

As for the Islamic view of sin, it is similar to the Jewish view. In fact, the religion of Islam is the natural culmination of the progressive revelation of God from the very first prophet to the last one, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Consequently, Islam believes in all prophets of God, from Adam to Muhammad, including Abraham, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them all).

According to the Islamic creed, the original religion taught by all these prophets is and was always Islam, which is the peaceful submission to the One and Only God. Thus, the concept of sin as taught by all prophets of God ought to be the same.

The closeness between Judaism and Islam in this regard is obvious; but in Christianity we find a great difference, which results from the influence of Saul of Tarsus, who is later known as St Paul. Paul introduced into Christianity the ideas of ‘God becoming man’ and ‘God dying for the sins of man’. Such concepts are entirely alien to the Semitic religious tradition and considered ‘pagan’, according to the Islamic view.

In Islam, a sin is an act against the will of Allah. We have the ability to abide by His will and this is the meaning of the word Islam. Still we have the ability to ignore His will or deliberately oppose it; due to the fact that God has given us freedom - though within limits).

Islam is our conscious and peaceful submission to the will of Allah. The purpose of our existence as human beings is to worship and serve Allah â€" or to fulfill His will. And, a solid foundation of worshipping Allah is to show gratitude to Him for the great gifts He has granted us. Following this will bring us the greatest benefits in this life and the next. It is in trying to do this that our intentions are purified and it is by our intentions that we are judged.

In contrast to the Christian teaching that human nature is basically evil [owing to the Original Sin], Islam teaches that it is essentially good. There are many elements to Human nature and each one has the potential to bring benefits. So there is no "Original Sin" in Islam. It is that when Man contradicts God’s commandments or His will, he commits sins.

Adam committed such a sin, which led to his expulsion from the Garden of Eden. But Adam repented and prayed to God for forgiveness, which God granted him, as mentioned in the following in Surah 2, verse 37:

*{Then learnt Adam from his Lord words of inspiration, and his Lord turned towards him; for He is Oft-returning, Most Merciful.}*

This means that unlike Christianity, which teaches that all the children of Adam are sinful for Adam’s sin, Islam teaches that all humans are innocent by birth and they become sinful only when they consciously commit a sin. Islam regards the concept of “original sin” and the need for atonement by God Himself - via dying on the Cross - as a pure invention of those who came after Jesus Christ, declaring themselves as Christians.

Another important point to bear in mind about the Islamic concept of sin is that one man’s sin cannot be transferred to another; nor can the reward due to a person be transferred either. Every individual is responsible only for his or her actions, for God is never unjust. This is made clear in the following in Surah 17, verse 15:
*{Who receiveth guidance, receiveth it for his own benefit: who goeth astray doth so to his own loss. No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another: nor would We punish until We had sent a messenger [to give warning].}*

Every individual is an independent person who is responsible for his or her actions alone. There is no need for salvation from sin, for there is no original burden. One's success in the Hereafter lies in his living a righteous life in this world. Each has to build his/her own Heaven, avoiding the misery of Hell. Faith is important, but faith alone without deeds will be fruitless.

And, Allah knows best.

The city was created through Republic Act No. 8471 in 1998. This organic act paved the way for the dissolution and merger of the three former-municipalities of Samal, Babak, and Kaputian into one local government unit, now officially named as the Island Garden City of Samal.

Mag Chacha na naman Muli

Cha-cha, sisimulan nang tatalakayin mamaya ng Kamara
4/14/2009 11:57:17 AM

"We are not proposing any change in the form of government, it is the Senate that is proposing a change in the form of government by doing away a presidential and going federal," pahayag ng opisyal.

DepEd personnel face penalty for collecting graduation contributions
By Catherine J. Teves

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MANILA, Feb. 22 (PNA) â€"- The Department of Education (DepEd), the agency having jurisdiction over primary and secondary private and public schools nationwide, will sanction its personnel who maybe proven collecting contributions for graduation rites.

DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapis gave this warning, saying the agency continues prohibiting such practice.

"None from DepEd can collect graduation contributions," he said at the Kapihan sa Sulo forum Saturday.

He added that DepEd will cite among grounds for sanctioning the Administrative Code of 1987.

Lapus gave the warning as the March 28-April 3, 2009 graduation season specified by DepEd for 2009 nears.

Earlier, Lapus issued DepEd Order 15 banning public schools from collecting either fees or other contributions for graduation rites.

"Parents can agree among themselves to volunteer collecting funds for either the graduation itself or celebration and other activities related to such event," he clarified.

Even if funds are raised this way, however, DepEd still prohibits graduation rites laced with pomp and pageantry.

"Graduation must be conducted with austerity and solemnity," Lapus said.

He noted that schools must not require extraordinary venues for graduation rites which DepEd prefers held within school premises instead in line with government's austerity program.

DepEd also ordered schools not to require special attire for graduation but said graduates can rent and wear the 'toga' subject to approval of parent-teacher associations concerned.

To help preserve the solemnity of graduation rites, Lapus reminded politicians who will speak at such events to refrain from using these as fora for expressing their political views.

DepEd has chosen "My Education: My Contribution to the Future" as theme for this year's graduation rites.

The agency also bans schools from imposing non-academic projects as among requirements for graduating. (PNA)

Migratory birds in Pangasinan bring threats of bangus shortage

Bangus (milkfish) growers are alarmed by the thousands of migratory birds flying to Pangasinan this season.

Part of the heron family, flocks of dukakak (egret) almost cover the skies of Binmaley, Pangasinan as they scout for bangus fingerlings, eating up to six young fish daily.

"We're really affected with the appetite of these birds," said bangus grower Edward Domalanta.

In an attempt to drive the birds away, fishermen have resorted to the use of firecrackers and nylon wires.

Aside from the adverse effect of egrets on the bangus industry, the provincial veterinary office of Pangasinan greatly fears the entry of bird flu into the country. It was reported that the egrets in Pangasinan migrate from China, one of the Asian countries greatly infected by avian influenza in 2005.

"The bird flu is very deadly for our poultry, causing as much as 80 to 100 percent fatalities," said Pangasinan provincial veterinarian Dr. Benedicto Perez.

The Philippines is one of the two Asian countries that has yet to be affected by avian influenza.  --With a report from Cris Zuniga, ABS-CBN Dagupan

Bohol Directory / The Eskaya Tribe, a Fact
March 15, 2009, 12:37:57 PM
The Eskaya, less commonly known as the Visayan-Eskaya, is the collective name for the members of a cultural minority found in Bohol, Philippines. The Eskaya community is distinguished by its cultural heritage, particularly its literature and language, although many of its earlier traditional practices are no longer strictly observed.[1] Reports indicate that Eskaya linguistic and cultural education has been in steady decline since the mid-1980s.[2][3][4] Legally, the Eskaya are classified as an indigenous group under Republic Act or R.A. No. 8371 entitled "The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997.[5][6]

[edit] Area

Most members of the Eskaya community inhabit a mountainous area that intersects the municipalities of Duero, Guindulman, Pilar, and Sierra Bullones in the once-forested region of Bohol's southeast interior. The original Eskaya settlement of Biabas (Guindulman), was established in the early 20th century by Mariano Datahan who died in 1949.[7] In 1951, the second township of Taytay (municipality of Duero) was founded by Fabian Baja in accordance with Datahan's directions.[8] Significant Eskaya populations are now also found in the nearby townships of Canta-ub, Lundag, Tambongan, Cadapdapan, and Fatimah. In 1996, the Eskaya community was awarded a certificate of Ancestral Domain Claim by President Fidel Ramos.[5] An official census of the Eskaya population has not yet been made. One report estimates that in 1991 there were 130 Eskaya families living in Bohol.[9]

[edit] Language and script
Main article: Eskayan

The speech variety of the Eskaya is known as Eskayan, or Ineskaya in the local Cebuano language. Lexically, Eskayan shows no clear relationship with any known language although there is strong but inconsistent Spanish influence.[10] A striking feature of the language is its unusual phonotactics, such as its patterns of consonant and vowel clusters.[11]

The Eskayan writing system takes the form of a syllabary of over 1,000 characters, all modeled on parts of the human body including internal organs.[12] This unique script has been compared variously to Phoenician,[13] Etruscan,[14][15] Hebrew, and even the undeciphered script of the Butuan paleograph.[16] While there are no mother-tongue speakers of Eskayan, it is taught to both adults and children in volunteer-run cultural schools. The Eskayan language and script has been the object of ongoing controversy.

[edit] Religion

Under the direction of Mariano Datahan, the group converted en masse to the nascent Philippine Independent Church in about 1902.[12] Community members revere the entity Suno which is conflated with the Santo Niño,[17] and in addition to weekly church services they are served by appointed spiritual leaders known as biki and beriki. The biki, or bishop, is responsible for performing harvest ceremonies and other rituals such as house blessing. Before a house can be constructed, a ritual is performed in which a spiritual leader asks the permission of the spirits. If permission is not granted, the builder must select a new site.[17] The Eskaya also retain spiritual traditions once widespread in lowland Boholano rural communities.[18]

[edit] Eskaya society

The teaching of Eskayan in the volunteer schools is one of the few remaining cultural practices of the Eskaya community.
Formerly, Eskaya men would wear shirts made of piña raffia with a Chinese-style collar, black breeches, and cotton berets. Women wore piña dresses with bulging sleeves similar to the Spanish-influenced Boholano style (mostly in Biabas) and covered their hair with cotton habits (mostly in Taytay).[17] Traditionally, women were not permitted to cut their hair short nor wear trousers, and drinking and dancing were universally prohibited. For the most part these customs have been discontinued, however traditional dress is sometimes worn on Sundays and special occasions.

At weddings the parents of the bride offer the couple a glass of water and a comb. The comb is dipped in the water and run through the hair of both bride and groom. Rice is then showered on the couple, connoting plenty.[17]

Until recently, the Eskaya practised a form of communal farming in which a portion of land was tilled for the benefit of the whole community.

[edit] Literature and mythology

[edit] The Old Books

The Eskaya literary canon is recorded in a series of texts comprising the karaang mga libro or "old books" and several secular writings.[12] These texts are mostly written in Eskayan, although a few are in Cebuano and one is reported to be in Spanish.[14] The Eskaya stories are fundamental to the community’s understanding of itself, particularly its origins, belief systems, and practices. One legend tells of how the group first arrived in Bohol from Sumatra. Their first leader, Dangko, had twelve children who settled near Antequera before moving east.[3] Various other Eskayan legends recount the stories of Boholano kings and heroes; a few of these stories even make reference to actual historical figures such as Jesus of Nazareth, Datu Sikatuna, Ferdinand Magellan, and Francisco "Dagohoy" Sendrijas. Due to these intersections with recorded history, some commentators consider them to be historical texts while others argue that they function solely as mythologies[19]

As part of their cultural education, students must transcribe five stories from the Old Books into lined textbooks at the Eskaya schools.[3]

The Eskaya writings mentioned by researchers are as follows: Abedeja, Ang Alpabeto sa Katsila, Ang Damgo ni Hurayhaber, Ang Lingganay na Ugís, Ang mga hiyas ug Caague ni Mariano Datahan, Ang pagtulun-an sa Bisayas, Aritmetica, Askormos Meneme, Atekeses, Bisayan Declarado, Daylinda, Grinada, Kwadra, Pamatasan, Pinay, Pinulungan, Rangnan, Simplet, Suno, Tumao and Unang Tao sa Bisaya sa Bohol. Identical texts sometimes go by different names and larger texts may subsume smaller ones.[19] Brenda Abregana, a former curator of the Bohol Museum, has mentioned a folded book of esoteric knowledge written in Spanish but its existence has not been established.[14]

[edit] Oral stories

The Eskaya oral stories are often oriented towards the future as millenarian prophecies.[2] Other tales concern relatively recent occurrences such as the Japanese occupation of Bohol in World War II.

[edit] History
Statue of Mariano Datahan outside the Eskaya cultural school, Taytay

Although the Eskaya had been known to people living in the vicinity of Bohol’s southeast highlands prior to World War II, it was only in the early 1980s that they came to wider public attention when government agricultural advisers toured the province to introduce Green Revolution policies.[20] Local journalists and researchers have since suggested various theories on the origins of the Eskaya but there is still no broad consensus on the subject.[19]

As far as documented evidence is concerned, genealogies attest that many of the predecessors of those living in the communities today originally came from the town of Loon on Bohol’s western coast;[21] Mariano Datahan is reported to have arrived at the site of present-day Biabas at the turn of the nineteenth century; The Philippine Independent Church in Biabas was established in 1902;[14] Datahan wrote a letter to President Manuel Quezon in 1937;[12] and the resistance hero Col. Esteban Bernido records a meeting with Datahan in Biabas in 1944.[22][23]

[edit] Theories and controversies

The Eskaya community has been the object of ongoing controversy, particularly with regards to its status as an indigenous group and the classification of the Eskayan language.[10] Intense speculation in the 1980s and 1990s on the part of journalists and lay historians generated a number of theories that continue to be elaborated without resolution.[19]

It has been argued variously that the Eskaya are a remnant of the original indigenous settlers on Bohol;[1] that they migrated to Bohol from Sumatra in the seventh century A.D.;[24] that they are descendants of the resistance groups that fought under Francisco Dagohoy;[25] that they are a cult[26] or secret society;[11] or that they are a conscious reconstruction of an imagined pre-colonial society.[12]

Some of the more unusual proposals are that the Eskaya people are a Semitic proto-Christian tribe;[27] that they possess the lost book of Enoch;[28] that they are descended from the builders of King Solomon’s temple;[13] that their existence proves the imminence of a second Messiah in Bohol; or that they guard esoteric secrets.[14]

Likewise, the Eskayan speech variety has been associated with languages as disparate as Hebrew, Greek, and Etruscan. Recent studies have revealed that the syntax of Eskayan is identical to that of Cebuano,[12][4][10] lending weight to the theory that Eskayan is actually an elaborate form of Cebuano coding.[8][10][12]

"English Carabao" ni Janina
(Photo;mg341.imageshack.us/.../binibinilicaroshy5.jpg)

Yung salitang commission, under the table, standard operational procedure (SOP), sovereign guarantee at “substantial compliance” ay walang iba kundi suhol, lagay at pangungulimbat.

Ayon kay Ornolfor Thorsson, tumayong adviser ng Presidente sa Iceland noong 1800, “Without our language, we have no culture, we have no identity, we are nothing.” Ipinahayag niya ito sa panahong nanganganib masalaula, burahin at patayin ng kolonyalistang Norwegian ang sariling wika ng bansang Iceland (the Icelanders as an ethnolinguistic people would have disappeared from the face of the earth).

EDSA REVOLUTION , Feb. 22-25, 1986

On February 22, Enrile and General Fidel Ramos, commander of the Philippine Constabulary, issued a joint statement demanding Marcos's resignation. They established their rebel headquarters inside Camp Aguinaldo and the adjoining Camp Crame in Metro Manila, which was guarded by several hundred troops. Marcos ordered loyal units to suppress the uprising, but Cardinal Sin, broadcasting over the Catholic-run Radio Veritas (which became the voice of the revolution), appealed to the people to bring food and supplies for the rebels and to use nonviolence to block pro-Marcos troop movements.

Hundreds of thousands responded. In the tense days that followed, priests, nuns, ordinary citizens, and children linked arms with the rebels and faced down, without violence, the tanks and machine guns of government troops. Many of the government troops defected, including the crews of seven helicopter gunships, which seemed poised to attack the massive crowd on February 24 but landed in Camp Crame to announce their support for People's Power. Violent confrontations were prevented. The Philippine troops did not want to wage war on their own people.

Although Marcos held an inauguration ceremony at Malacañang Palace on February 25, it was boycotted by foreign ambassadors (with the exception, in an apparently unwitting gaffe, of a new Soviet ambassador). It was, for the Marcoses, the last, pathetic hurrah. Advised by a United States senator, Paul Laxalt, who had close ties to Reagan, to "cut and cut cleanly," Marcos realized that he had lost United States support for any kind of arrangement that could keep him in power. By that evening, the Marcoses had quit the palace that had been their residence for two decades and were on their way to exile in the United States. Manila's population surged into Malacañang to view the evidence of the Marcos's extravagant life-style (including Imelda's muchpublicized hundreds of pairs of expensive, unworn shoes). An almost bloodless revolution brought Corazon Aquino into office as the seventh president of the Republic of the Philippines.

Where the Roman gods and goddesses had nectar and ambrosia, Filipinos have buwad and ginamos.

With just these, there’s no limit to how much rice we can consume.  Except, perhaps, for the world food crisis.  But this is just to emphasize that a sliver of buwad or a teaspoon of ginamos can go a very long way on the Filipino dinner table.

In their basic process, pag-gamos and pagbuwad are merely ways of preserving the excess of a fisherman’s catch for the day.  Sometimes, though, they are sought and preferred even when fresh fish and other seafood are plentiful.  Both are begun with cleaning and salting but the ginamos are left to soak in a bottle or a jar for days or weeks and the buwad is left to dry under the sun until one gets the desired degree of dryness.  Not far from ginamos is tinabal.  The fish is salted heavily and left to season in its own juices.  Tinabal can be any size, from a labajan to a molmol but I don’t know if just about any fish can be tinabal.

For the farmer or any worker who needs to stock up on carbohydrates for a hard day’s work, ginamos is one of the cheapest ways to build up an appetite.  And what an appetite.  Have you ever tried to stop someone during a meal of ginamos bolinaw, inun-onang borot-borot, and mounds of rice?  Or of ginamos nga ojap sautéed with a few slices of pork and mounds of rice?  Or how about ginamos nga tagimtim, suka, lemonsito, and, again, mounds of rice?

The same is true with buwad.  The Filipino breakfast table seems incomplete without a plateful of buwad bolinaw, potpot, or mangsi fried crisp in edible oil or somewhat blackened after a few minutes on top of red-hot coals.  What is humbang nangka or nilaw-oy without flakes of buwad as subak?  And can you contemplate life without the delicacy of the buwad nokus or danggit.

And don’t get me started on tinabal.  Just imagine a heavily salted molmol about a week away from becoming ginamos.  How glorious would it be when it’s sautéed in oil, garlic, onions, and a lot of red, ripe tomatoes?

When I was still a kid, my father would sometimes joke, whenever we came upon a really good batch of ginamos, that it was tasty because it had fallen into a kanal, was retrieved from it, and then sold to us.  Even in those times that I believed the joke, I would still eat the ginamos.  In the years that have passed I’ve come to learn that the kanal joke is universal and that I was not alone in insisting to eat ginamos in spite of it.

Filipino humor has more to say on ginamos.  We know of a variety of preparations that have been shortened to suggest morbid execution.  There’s the classic gipusil, or ginamos pus-ag sili.  There’s also gipriso, ginamos pritohon nga solo, although I personally believe that it’s better when it’s gikahon, ginamos ug kamatis gisahon.  Then comes gidunggab, ginamos dungag gabi.  Lastly, there’s the dread gitook, ginamos tongtongag ok-ok.

Whether you believe in the kanal joke or not or have personally experienced gitook, if you want to be sure about how sanitary your ginamos is, you can always make your own.  You will need a glass jar, some small fish (your choice of kujog, bolinaw, or mubgas) or tagimtim or sisi, and some salt.  Rub the salt all over the fish.  How much salt you use will depend on your taste.  To this, you can add a few lemonsito leaves or a few cloves of ahos to make the ginamos fragrant.  Put the fish in the jar and let alone for days or weeks until ma-gamos na.  The procedure for making buwad is pretty much evident in its name, just keep it out of the reach of cats and other creatures.

One may be driven to eat them every day out of necessity or, if you’re better off, you can eat them as you please and by choice.  Whatever your status, buwad and ginamos have us Filipinos bound as one people.  It may be through our stomachs, but that’s not much further from our hearts.

 A Celebration of Love

The legend surrounding the original Valentine is a saga.

In the third century, Roman Emperor Claudius II decided that his armies would be most effective if they were comprised of young, unmarried men who weren't tied down by wives or families.

To achieve this for his army, Claudius outlawed marriage for men at their fighting prime. A certain Bishop Valentine allegedly saw the injustice of Claudius' proclamation and continued to wed young lovers in secret. When he was discovered, Claudius sentenced Valentine to death and had him imprisoned.

While in prison, Valentine is said to have fallen in love with the jailer's daughter, who visited him regularly in his confinement. He declared his love in his last letter to her before his execution and signed it, "From your Valentine."

Long after Claudius II, a festival in honor of Lupercus, a fertility god, became increasing popular among adolescents. During the mid-February celebration, each young man chose the name of a teenage girl by lottery to be his sexual companion for the coming year.

The Catholic church sought to cease the pagan ritual and looked for a patron saint to attract the attentions of the frolicking youth away from Lupercian traditions. Thus they heralded Valentine, beheaded by Claudius II in 270 AD (possibly to the great loss of a jailer's daughter) the Patron Saint of Love, and the mid-February ceremony morphed over time into our February 14 "St. Valentine's Day."

Today, it is celebrated all round the world by lovers. They exchange cards, gifts, flowers, and promises. They take it as an oppurtunity to proclaim their love for each other. Thus the saint of love has become immortal through these celebrations.

Mindanao Davao archbishop seeks forgiveness for married priest
02/02/2009 | 01:51 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla on Monday asked his flock to forgive one of the priests in the archdiocese who had been married in the past but has since regretted his act.

Capalla issued a statement seeking "compassion and forgiveness" for Fr. Pedro Lamata, after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte disclosed on television that he [Lamata] was a married priest.

"As the spiritual father of all the Catholics in Davao City including my friend Mayor Digong and my priest Fr. Pete as well as others who might be in a similar situation, I would like to appeal for compassionate reconciliation, that is, to forgive and to receive forgiveness," Capalla's statement read.

Excerpts of the statement were posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website.

Capalla issued the statement after Duterte said on his television program last weekend that Lamata, now the parish priest of St. Mary's Church in Buhangin district, was married.

The archbishop said Lamata had contracted civil marriage with a woman as a young priest, but has long repented for what he had done.

He said a priest contracting marriage is a serious violation against the Code of Canon Law that merits automatic suspension from the ministry.

Capalla said Lamata had already been suspended from his priestly ministry because of what he did, but has since repented and restored to priestly ministry.

"Since that time until today, like a wounded healer Fr. Pedro Lamata has been a dedicated and energetic priest and pastor, well-loved and respected by many people especially his parishioners and friends, even from among the Muslims and Protestants," Capalla said.

Capalla learned of Lamata's case when he succeeded Archbishop Antonio Mabutas as the Davao archbishop.

He stressed that forgiveness is "being recommended not immediately but when both are predisposed for this Christian act."

"Forgiveness is given and received not to deny the Church's moral teachingsâ€"which must be preached boldlyâ€"but to admit the possible misinterpretation and misinformation that followed certain public utterances," he added. - GMANews

Today's reality indicates that the Philipines is left behind in economic progress by almost
every country in the world including Asian countries like Japan, China, Singapore, South
Korea and others. Even Vietman which , not too long ago was a war zone. It starting now
to overtake us.

The simple solution is to improve the quality of our education and everything else will move
forward.

In the third International Mathematics and Science Study involving 40 countries, our
country ended up third to the last in Mathematics and second to the last in science ahead
only of South Africa. The result reflects the state of our country, which is characterized by
incompetence, and why poverty is prevalent.

To be more competing globally, is it  necessary that we will add one year in college for
all degree courses.?

Give your comments and suggestions.

Philippine History / Today is Innocents Day Dec. 28
December 28, 2008, 02:48:46 PM
What is Innocents Day?

The Massacre of the Innocents is at Matthew 2:16-18, although the preceding verses form the context (the "they" in the opening verse refers to the Magi):
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. Get up, he said, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him. So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: Out of Egypt I called my son.[5] When Herod realised that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."[6]

The commemoration of the massacre of these "Holy Innocents"—considered by some Christians as the first martyrs for Christ[18]—first appears as a feast of the western church in the Leonine Sacramentary, dating from about 485. The date of Holy Innocents' Day, also called Childermas or Children's Mass, varies. 27 December is the date for West Syrians (Syriac Orthodox Church, Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, and Maronite Church) and East Syrians (Chaldeans and Syro-Malabar Catholic Church). 28 December is the date in the Roman Catholic Church (before 1961, violet vestments were worn, unless 28 December fell on a Sunday, instead of red, the normal colour for celebrating martyrs), the Church of England and the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the feast on 29 December.
In Spain and Ibero-America, December 28 is a day for pranks, equivalent to April Fool's Day in many countries. Pranks are known as inocentadas and their victims are called inocentes, or alternatively, the pranksters are the "inocentes" and the victims should not be angry at them, since they could not have committed any sin. Various Catholic countries had a tradition (no longer widely observed) of role reversal between children and their adult educators, including boy bishops, perhaps a Christianized version of the Roman annual feast of the Saturnalia (when even slaves played 'masters' for a day). In some cultures it is said to be an unlucky day, when no new project should be started.
In addition, there was a medieval custom of refraining where possible from work on the day of the week on which the feast of "Innocents Day" had fallen for the whole of the following year until the next Innocents Day. This was presumably mainly observed by the better-off. Philippe de Commynes, the minister of King Louis XI of France tells in his memoirs how the king observed this custom, and describes the trepidation he felt when he had to inform the king of an emergency on the day.[19]

Bohol Directory / Dec. 16 starts the " Simbang Gabi"
December 16, 2008, 09:18:51 AM

SIMBANG GABI

SIMBANG GABI is one of the longest and most popular among the Filipino traditions in the country. It is when Catholic churches across the nation start to open their doors shortly before the break of dawn to welcome the faithful to the Simbang Gabi mass.
Simbang Gabi or Mass at Dawn is a nine-day novena to the Blessed Mother. The novena begins December 16 as early as 4 in the morning and culminates with the “Misa de Gallo” on Christmas Eve to welcome the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. In some churches, the panuluyan is reenacted showing the effort of Joseph and Mary to find a suitable birthplace.

ORIGIN
Simbang Gabi traces its roots in Mexico when, in 1587, the Pope granted the petition of Fray Diego de Soria, prior of the convent of San Agustin Acolman, to hold Christmas mass outdoors because the Church could not accommodate the huge number of people attending the evening mass.

During the old times, the pre-dawn mass is announced by the ringing of the church bells. In some rural areas, an hour before the start of Simbang Gabi, a brass band plays Christmas music all over the town. It is also believed that parish priests would go far knocking on doors to wake and gather the faithful to attend the misa de gallo. Farmers as well as fishermen wake up early to hear the Gospel before going to their work and ask for the grace of good harvest.

SIMBANG GABI NOW AND THEN
The changing of times does not break the preservation of celebrating Simbang Gabi although it is celebrated in new ways. Still, the tradition of Simbang Gabi continues. Part of it are the colorful lights and lanterns that fill every streets. Beautiful parols are hung in every window. Songs of the season are played everywhere to warm the hearts. Families, friends and even individuals find its way going to the nearest church to attend the nine-day novena. Shortly after the misa de gallo, families gather in their homes to celebrate Noche Buena and feasted on various delicacies like queso de bola, bibingka, puto bungbong, or a drink of salabat or hot chocolate.

SIGNIFICANCE
Simbang Gabi has become one of the most popular traditions in the country. But it is not just a tradition that is celebrated because we need to do so. It is a significant moment not only because it strengthens relationships among family members but also because it is the time where our faith is intensified. This is the time where we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. It does not matter if one has the stamina to complete the novena or not, what really matters is what is inside the heart. The blessing does not depend on the number of mass attended, but what is important is the disposition of the person who receives the Lord’s blessing.

Teachers run vs GSIS chief Winston Garcia

A group of public school teachers in Metro Manila staged a a fun run along Baywalk in Roxas Boulevard Sunday morning to oppose Government Service and Insurance System president and general manager Winston Garcia and seek an end to the malpractices the GSIS chief has been doing at the state pension fund's helm.

The protesters said the plight of the teachers worsened when Garcia took office at the state pension fund.

Among the complaints were the delayed posting of collection and remittance of GSIS premiums, erroneous deductions from benefits for loans the teachers have not applied for, and low retirement benefits.

The teachers want Garcia removed from GSIS. They also accused him of using his power to make the state pension fund an enterprise.

Enriqueta Disuanco, GSIS vice-president for corporate support, earlier said the anti-Garcia protesters are unfair.

She said those who were protesting do not representing the majority of GSIS members.

She also said that GSIS only prepares the deduction reports and it is actually the Department of Education that deduct the fees from the public teachers' salaries.

Disuanco claimed that Garcia carried out reforms like computerizing and centralizing their records to provide efficient service to their members.

She cited a P40 billion increase in GSIS income in 2001 when Garcia assumed his post

Baclayon - Bohol / Happy Fiesta
December 08, 2008, 12:11:47 PM
Baclayon,  the oldest town of Bohol celebrates its town fiesta today, Dec. 8,  of the Immaculae Conception of the blessed Virgin Mary.

Happy Fiesta..

What is the immaculate conception?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: "What is the immaculate conception?"

Answer: Many people mistakenly believe that the immaculate conception refers to the conception of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ conception was most assuredly immaculate…but this concept does not refer to Jesus at all. The immaculate conception is a doctrine of the Romans Catholic Church in regards to Mary, Jesus’ mother. An official statement of the doctrine reads, “…the blessed Virgin Mary to have been, from the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Christ Jesus the Savior of Mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin.” Essentially the immaculate conception is the belief that Mary was protected from original sin, that Mary did not have a sin nature, and was, in fact, sinless.

The problem with the doctrine of the immaculate conception is that it is not taught in the Bible. The Bible nowhere describes Mary as anything but an ordinary human female whom God chose to be the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mary was undoubtedly a godly woman (Luke 1:28). Mary was surely a wonderful wife and mother. Jesus definitely loved and cherished His mother (John 19:27). The Bible gives us no reason to believe that Mary was sinless. In fact, the Bible gives us every reason to believe that Jesus Christ is the only Person who was not “infected” by sin and never committed a sin (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5).

The doctrine of the immaculate conception originated out of confusion over how Jesus Christ could be born sinless if He was conceived inside of a sinful human female. The thought was that Jesus would have inherited a sinful nature from Mary had she been a sinner. In contrast to the immaculate conception, the Biblical solution to this problem is understanding that Jesus Himself was miraculously protected from being polluted by sin while He was inside Mary's womb. If God was capable of protecting Mary from sin, would He not be able to protect Jesus from sin? Therefore, Mary being sinless is neither necessary or Biblical.

The Roman Catholic Church argues that the immaculate conception is necessary because without it, Jesus would have been the object of His own grace. The thought goes like this – for Jesus to have been miraculously preserved from sin, which itself would be an act of grace, that would mean God essentially “graced Himself.” The word grace means “unmerited favor.” Grace is giving someone something he or she does not deserve. God performing a miracle in preserving Jesus from sin is not “grace.” In no sense could Jesus possibly be infected with sin. He was perfect and sinless humanity joined with sinless divinity. God cannot be infected or affected by sin, as He is perfectly holy. This same truth applies to Jesus. It did not take “grace” to protect Jesus from sin. Being God incarnate, Jesus was in His essence “immune” from sin.

So, the doctrine of the immaculate conception is neither Biblical or necessary. Jesus was miraculously conceived inside Mary, who was a virgin at the time. That is the Biblical concept of the virgin birth. The Bible does not even hint that there was anything significant about Mary’s conception. If we examine this concept logically, Mary’s mother would have to be immaculately conceived as well. How could Mary be conceived without sin if her mother was sinful? The same would have to be said of Mary’s grandmother, great-grandmother, and so on. So, in conclusion, the immaculate conception is not a Biblical teaching. The Bible teaches the miraculous virgin conception of Jesus Christ, not the immaculate conception of Mary.

Philippine History / Bonifacio Day is Nov. 30
November 30, 2008, 03:51:03 PM
If Andres Bonifacio were alive today, how old is he now?

Andres Bonifacio (1863-1897) was the foremost Philippine revolutionary who organized the KKKAnB which spearheaded the 1896 Revolution against Spain.

Andres Bonifacio was born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro, a Spanish mestiza in Tondo, manila on November 30, 1863. He started his early education in the school of Guillermo Osmeña of Cebu. He reached only primary school. At the age of 14, his father and mother died, forcing him to quit his studies and to look after his younger brothers and sisters. As a means of support, he had them help him make wooden canes and paper fans, which he sold in the streets.

Having learned how to read and write, he became a clerk messenger of Fleming and Company, a business firm dealing with rattan, tar, and other articles of trade. Because of his industry he was promoted as agent. But his earning were still not sufficient to support the orphans. He moved to Fressell and Company as an agent. He showed determination and industry in his job. He supplemented his education through further reading and self-study. He wrote poetry and even became a stage actor in moro-moro. He later became a mason and a sworn enemy of Spanish authorities.

He became a member of La Liga Filipina, an organization founded by Jose Rizal upon his return from Europe. But when Rizal was deported to Dapitan making the Liga practically dead as an organization, he quickly organized the Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan. This organization spread rapidly in 1894 in many parts of the Philippines. He felt that he was about ready to lead a successful revolt in May 1896. However, before he could act, the Katipunan was discovered by the authorities. More than 1,000 Katipuneros assembled with him at Pugad Lawin, Caloocan, on August 23, 1896 and tore their cedulas. Since the time the Katipunan was discovered, they evaded arrest, won uncertain victories and incurred severe defeats. This prompted the Magdiwang faction to invite Bonifacio to Cavite to settle their differences and remain united.

An assembly was called at Tejeros, Cavite. Bonifacio presided the conference to establish the Republic of the Philippines. In the election, Emilio Aguinaldo was elected President, Mariano Trias, Vice-President and Bonifacio as Secretary of the Interior. Daniel Tirona questioned Bonifacio's qualifications, and Bonifacio was offended. Evoking his authority as the supreme head of the Katipunan, he declared the proceedings void. Bonifacio moved to Naic, Cavite and started to form his own government and army. Meantime, the advancing troops of Spanish General Camilo de Polavia threatened to capture Cavite. Aguinaldo ordered Gen Pio del Pilar and Noriel who were being given new higher positions to leave the Bonifacio camp and go back to their duties.

Bonifacio with his family and men left Naic for Indang. On his return from Montalban, Aguinaldo sent men to arrest him, but Bonifacio resisted arrest and was wounded. He faced a trial for acts inimical to the existence of the new government and was given the death sentence by a military tribunal. Aguinaldo's men executed him in the mountains of Maragondon, Cavite on May 10, 1897.

Bohol Directory / Ube, the Sacred Food of the Boholanos

Ube, the Sacred Food of the Boholanos
     by fdaray

Ube is one of the tubers or yam that grows abundantly and harvested in December in
Bohol. After the harvest, the rootcrops are inspected and those with bolo cuts and
bruises were used first for food as substitute for rice and corn. The rest are stored for
family consumption anytime during the year. Ubi planting goes back in June. There are
many varities of ube like kabus-ok, tam-isan, kabawoy, liko , binanag and the famous
purple-violet kinampay, the king of ube.

Ube is the main staple rootcrops of the Boholanos and venerated as sacred crop since
the ancient times.   During a famine that happened   long befor the coming  of the
Spaniards, it is said that the ube was the only crop grew in Bohol and saved the people
from extreme hunger and death. That is why they had a great respect for it and why it
is the only staple food mentioned in the Bohol Hym. At this time, the  Boholanos started
to honor by having  an Ube Festival in January. They had  also the Miss Ube Beauty
Pageant. You can see displays of different ube varities with different sizes and an award
is given to the biggest ube.

Tagged as one of the countrys' five crops for export by the Department of Trade and
Industry, the demand of ube continues to grow. Here and abroad, it is being marketed
in powdered form, puree, dried chips, cubes, syrup and for ice cream, the famous purpled
'kinampay'.

When one speak of Ube to a Boholano, there is always a story to tell.  When a person
accidentaly drop an ube  to the ground or floor, they say an apology saying "puyra gaba,
wala nako tuyoa" and kiss it as a sign of reverence and love.

The Boholanos believed that Ube was the  special food given to them by Bathala, the
Supreme Creator. It was the food that saved them from extreme famine when a drought
happened long time ago.
