Jokes and Humor / Joke,joke,joke!

Little Susie was not the best student in Catholic School .
Usually she slept through the class.

One day her teacher, a Nun, called on her while she was sleeping.

'Tell me Susie, who created the universe?'

When Susie didn't stir, little Johnny who was her friend sitting
behind her, took his pencil and jabbed her in the rear.

'God Almighty!' shouted Susie.

The Nun said, 'Very good' and continued teaching her class.

A little later the Nun asked Susie, 'Who is our Lord and Savior?'

But Susie didn't stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came
to her rescue and stuck her in the butt.

'Jesus Christ!!!' shouted Susie.

And the Nun once again said, 'Very good,' and Susie fell back asleep.

The Nun asked her a third question...'What did Eve say to Adam
after she had her twenty-third child?'

Again, Johnny came to the rescue. This time Susie jumped up and
shouted, 'If you stick that damn thing in me one more time, I'll
break it in half!'

The nun fainted.

Bible Study / Give God Your Hurts
June 27, 2009, 08:09:43 PM
In your life, you will be hurt by others; sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally. How you handle that hurt determines your happiness. When you bottle up hurt in your life and hold onto it, that is called resentment. If somebody hurt you years ago and you're still holding onto it, it will poison your life. For your own health and happiness, you must learn to forgive.

The Bible says forgive and be forgiven. In fact, Jesus says, "If you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive the wrongs you have done" (Matthew 6:15 TEV). They're inter-related. It reminds me of the story where someone told John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, "I just can't forgive that person! They hurt me too badly." Wesley's response was, "Then I hope you never sin."

For your own sake, let go of the past. If somebody hurt you, let go of it, release them. That's one of the values of prayer. It helps you unload. Forgiveness is the only way to get rid of the past. Forgive them and let it go. Get on with life. Forgiveness erases the videotape of that hurt memory that keeps playing over and over in your mind.

In my own marriage, the times I've felt closest to Kay, the times of most intimacy and oneness, have been times after a major blow up. We've worked the thing through, we've both confessed to each other and asked forgiveness, and then we pray together. The oneness that comes out of that kind of experience just can't be explained.

When we let go of our hurts and forgive others, we are reflecting the grace of our heavenly Father who forgave us and continues to forgive us. It means we've given God our love; we've given God our lives, and, in doing that, we worship God.

Bible Study / When You Pray,Give God your Guilt
June 27, 2009, 12:23:51 AM
We all make mistakes. We all have regrets. I don't measure up to my own standard for myself, much less God's standard of perfection. It's not very hard to admit you're not perfect. So what do we do when we fall short?

I was listening to a psychologist on the radio recently. A guy called in and was pouring his heart out about how guilty he felt for things he had done wrong. He asked, "How can I get rid of my guilt?" This psychologist said: "You can't. You've got to learn to live with it." I almost shouted at the radio: "Wait a minute! Give me that guy's phone number! He doesn't have to go through life filled with guilt!"

There is no reason in the world you have to live with guilt. God has given us a way to get rid of guilt. It's called confession. God promises that when we confess, He forgives us instantly, totally, completely, freely, and continuously. If a Christian is carrying guilt around, it's because they're not taking advantage of what Jesus Christ did on the cross. Give God your guilt. Doing this, asking for pardon, is the next step in making contact with God.

God wants to forgive you. You don't have to beg for forgiveness: "God, please, pretty please with sugar on it!" You don't have to bargain: "God, if You forgive me, I will never do it again." You don't have to bribe: "God, if You'll forgive me, I promise to always read my Bible." You simply believe you are forgiven.

If you ever run out of things to pray about, just get specific about your sins and weaknesses. When I talk with God about my weaknesses and sins, I never lack for subject matter. In fact, I'm always coming up with new material! There's plenty of things to talk about in my life that need to be changed.

You worship God through prayer when you give Him your love (praise), your life (purpose), and your worries (provision). And also when you ask Him for forgiveness (pardon) of your sins.

Pair had a huge argument right after civil ceremony, wanted annulment

BERLIN - A Polish couple living in Germany fell out after tying the knot and decided to end their marriage on the same day.

"He said he never wanted to see her again and wanted an immediate annulment, and she said the same thing," a spokesman for police in the northern city of Hanover said Thursday.

Right after the civil ceremony Wednesday, the 50-year-old man began rowing with his bride and tried to cut her hair with a kitchen knife, police said.

The 34-year-old woman called police, who issued the man with a restraining order, which he readily accepted, police said.

Two attempts at a rapprochement later that evening by telephone ended in more shouted exchanges before the man went to spend his wedding night in a local shelter for homeless people.

Bible Study / When You Pray,Begins with Praise
June 24, 2009, 09:53:36 PM
This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven: May Your holy name be honored'" (Matthew 6:9 TEV).

When Jesus' friends asked Him how to pray, He gave them a model prayer. Today we call it the Lord's Prayer, and it gives us a great outline for making contact with God.

The first idea Jesus gives us for making contact with God is captured by the words: "Our Father in heaven: May Your holy name be honored" (Matthew 6:9 TEV). Jesus is talking about praise. You begin making contact with God by praising him, by worshiping him.

What is praise? Praise is thanking God for who and what He is. It means to value Him, to esteem Him. It means bragging on him: "God, You are good! There's no one as good as You!"

Why should I praise God? Because it gets my focus off myself and onto God so I can talk to Him and not at Him. That's why we start with praise. If you want help learning how to praise God, read through the Psalms. Many of them were written simply to praise God. If you read them aloud, you'll learn a lot about praising God in prayer.

Notice Jesus talks about God's name being holy. Did you know God has many names? In the Old Testament there are many different names of God. In the Bible, a name was a clue to a person's character. The Bible reveals the character of God through the names it uses for Him. Through these names, we learn that:

• God is present with me.
• God is my Shepherd.
• God is my Provider.
• God is my Healer.
• God is my Peace.
• God is my victory in conflict.

Praying the names of God reminds you of who He is and what He has done for you, and that will stir up love in your heart for Him. You begin worshipfully praying by giving God your love.

Bible Study / God Wants You to Be Real
June 21, 2009, 01:05:46 AM
We worship God when we're honest with God.

In New Testament times, the Pharisees were pros at pretentious prayers. It became quite a source of pride. They were showing off, trying to impress people with their prayers.

The problem is, they weren't impressing God. God wants us to be honest when we pray. Being genuine when we approach God and talk to God is part of worship.

Jesus taught that prayer is not something you do to be seen. Here are two suggestions for helping you to get real with God:

Don't try to impress others with your prayers. Have you ever heard a prayer prayed and when the person finished you wanted to go, "Wow! What a performance!" It sounded so good and you thought that it was great.

Or, have you ever been in a prayer group and everybody's praying around a circle and you're thinking, "There's only three left until me . . . only two left . . . only one . . . I'm next! What am I going to say that hasn't already been said? What are they going to think?" When you stop worrying about what other people will think about your prayer life, then you'll be released to enjoy prayer. God doesn't care how you say it.

Don't try to impress God with your prayers. Often we do this unconsciously. We pray things that we think God wants us to say, rather than praying what's really on our hearts. God made you the way you are, so He wants you to be real when you talk to Him. He already knows the real you; He knows all the great things about you and He knows all the bad things you've doneâ€"and He still loves you!

Inspiration & Hope / The Four Lover
February 18, 2009, 07:16:47 PM
Once upon a time there was a Queen who had four lovers.

She loved the 4th lover the most and adorned him with rich robes and treated him to the finest of delicacies. She gave him nothing but the Best.

She also loved the 3rd lover very much and was always showing him off to neighboring kingdoms. However, she feared that one day he would leave her for another.

She also loved her 2nd lover. He was her confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with her. Whenever the Queen faced a problem, she could confide in him, and he would help her get through the difficult times.

The Queen's 1st lover was a very loyal partner and
had made great contributions in maintaining her wealth and kingdom. However, she did not love the first lover. Although he loved her deeply, she hardly took notice of him.

One day, the Queen fell ill and she knew her time was
short. She thought of her luxurious life and wondered, I now have four lovers with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone.

Thus, she asked the 4th lover, "I loved you the
most! , endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"

'No way!' replied the 4th lover, and he walked away without another word.

His answer cut like a sharp knife right into her heart.

The sad Queen then asked the 3rd lover, "I loved you
all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"

'No!' replied the 3rd lover. 'Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to love someone else!'

Her heart sank and turned cold.

She then asked the 2nd lover, "I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me.
When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"

'I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!' replied
the 2nd lover. 'At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave.'

His answer struck her like a bolt of lightning, and the Queen was devastated.

Then a voice called out: 'I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go.'

The Queen looked up, and there was her first lover.
He was very skinny as he suffered from malnutrition and neglect.

Greatly grieved, the Queen said, "I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!"

In truth, you have 4 lovers in your life:

Your 4th lover is your body. No matter how much time
and effort you lavish in making it look good, it will leave you when you die?

Your 3rd lover is your possessions, status and wealth.
When you die, it will all go to others.

Your 2nd lover is your family and friends. No matter
how much they have been there for you, the furthest they can stay by you is up to the Grave.

And your 1st lover is your Soul, often neglected in
pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world.

However, your Soul is the only thing that will follow you where ever you go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it
is the only part of you that will follow you to the throne of God and ! continue with you throughout Eternity.

Thought for the day:
Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees,
You're in the perfect position to pray.

Tribute to Orchids (Aya) / Orchid...we miss you!
September 26, 2008, 04:37:34 PM

We miss you Orchids

Angel Teardrops
by Kathleen Sheppard
My guardian angel, once careless and free,
flew into the clouds and lost touch with me.
Her tears were cold and wet, falling on my face.
Her smile had left us without a trace.

Her angelic lips quivered, frozen and scared,
I felt rain clouds visiting, and had to prepare.
I knew that angels, often content,
were very special presents that God had sent.

To see one so sad,
so afraid,
so alone,
had made me weep while the cold winds had blown.

Her wings lost feathers,
comforting and soft,
falling from the stars,
floating aloft.

Her pain was felt throughout the land,
to feel true misery is impossible to stand.
I prayed so that when her hurting stops,
I'll be able to taste the angel's teardrops

Never Say Amen
by Jon Walker

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. Matthew 26:40 (NIV)

Today’s guest devotional is provided by Jon Walker â€"

Read this devotional as a prayer:

Help me, Lord, to develop a strong prayer life. I know you desire intimacy with me, and you want me to watch with you and pray (Matthew 26:40).

Yet, I never seem to find the time to pray in a deep, fervent, consistent, persistent way. What draws me to my knees the most is when I have a problem, when I want something from you, when I need your help.

I’m flipping through my calendar, stressing with commitments, and you just want to hang out â€" with me. Help me turn my prayers into conversations with you that keep flowing throughout the day, an on-going communication where I never say “Amen.”

Keep me close to you, no matter what it takes. I’m not sure I really want to pray that; I have bruises and scars from “whatever it takes” discipleship, but, then again, I confess the crush of these moments have taught me to throw myself on the stone before the stone falls on me.

And that has moved me closer to the love that compels my obedience, closer to becoming one with your heart. So, I’m asking that you change me until my deepest want is to be with you.

With this I pray that you will create me worthy of my calling and that your power will fulfill every good purpose you plan for me and energize everything I do in faith.

My prayer is that your life will emerge in my face and in my hands, in my thoughts and in my words. I know your grace will make it so (paraphrase of 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, NIV).

Inspiration & Hope / Only One You
September 15, 2007, 10:41:33 AM
Mister Rogers was right after all: There is only one you. But this information is much more important than to just be boosting your self-esteem. It is to help you better serve others by being more confident about your God-given role in life.

No one else fits your shape. No one else has your blend of gifts, talents, and natural abilities â€" making you very important in the whole scheme of things. “God made our bodies with many parts,” wrote Paul, “and he has put each part just where he wants it.” (1 Corinthians 12:18) And as it is with the human body, so it is with the Body of Christ â€" the corporate collection of all who believe.

But this uniqueness goes beyond giftedness; it reaches as well into the depth of each of our experiences in life. No one else has your life. No one else has your pain, your hardship, your joys and sorrows. Everything in life shapes us and we are shaped by everything for a reason â€" so that we can touch others in a unique way based upon who we are and what we’ve been through. God doesn’t waste anything in our lives.

Every piece of our lives and experiences can be used of Christ to touch someone else. We were made for each other; we live for each other; we even die for each other. We die with hope so that others who live might see the reality of Christ in even the darkest of hours. God uses everything.

Are you just getting by, or are you living for a reason? Think about your unique gifts and ask yourself how those gifts are benefiting others. What specific way is God using you to touch others in the Body of Christ? Do you seem to have an extra measure of wisdom, or mercy, or discernment, or knowledge, or administration, or desire to serve? These will help determine how you can look for opportunities to help others.

And then think about the things you have gone through so far in your life â€" especially the difficult or challenging things where God has met you with his presence and power. That information is not just for you, it’s for you to empathize with and encourage others who have encountered similar struggles.

God isn’t messing around here. There are no accidents with our lives. Whatever we have received and experienced has shaped who we are, and because of that, we are qualified servants. There is truly no one else like you … for a reason.

Fashion Trend / Color Me Bad
August 22, 2007, 03:54:56 PM
When wearing the right colors you will naturally feel more confident.

If you think you already know your best colors, it can’t hurt to re-assess them and see if they are still pleasing on you. Your skin can become more sallow with age, and your natural hair color may change, too. It may be time to “tweak” your colors a bit.

The color-by-season theory is not an exact science, but it is a useful tool. These questions will help you select your "seasonal" colors:

1. The two main undertones that exist are cool undertones and warm undertones -- or yellow and blue-based. Which undertones match your natural skin tone the best?

2. The next thing to keep in mind when selecting your complimentary colors is the depth of the colors. How intense are the colors? Do you look better in deep colors or are lighter colors better on you?

3. Is your appearance overwhelmed by bright shades or does your skin really come alive with brighter shades? Bright, clear coloring is found on women with a high contrast in hair, skin and eyes. If you are muted, you are fair and there is less contrast with hair, eye and skin color, and your coloring is softer and muted.

4. Should you listen to others? The good news is most people naturally select colors that appeal to them and also look good on them. Don’t let the fashion industry or your mother’s favorite colors dictate your choices. Pick the colors you instinctively like!

There are not always straight-forward answers to these questions. Sometimes you can be a bit of two seasons. For instance, you can be primarily a “winter,” but also be able to successfully wear some of the summer shades that are deeper in color. However, you may not be able to wear the lighter “summer” muted shades without looking dull. In other words, it is common to have some overlap.

When trying to find your season and color intensity, ask yourself while holding up different colors (one with warm undertones and another with cool undertones) next to your face: Do the warmer seasons (spring and autumn) suit me, or are the cooler seasons (winter and summer) more pleasing next to my face? Also, to determine your colors, ask yourself if bright colors or softer tones are better on you.

How to tell if you are a warm seasons -- autumn or spring?
If your coloring is warm and clear, you are a spring. Springs have golden undertones and creamy white or peachy complexions. They have strawberry blonde, straw-colored hair, or they are redheads with freckles, rosy cheeks and green or blue eyes.

Springs can wear warm and light colors such as salmon, coral, lime, light moss green, apricot, bright yellow, light aqua, light gray and camel.

If your coloring is warm and muted with deep, rich shades, you are an autumn. Autumns have golden undertones and often are redheads or brunettes with brown eyes with golden flecks (their eyes have more contrast compared to the fairer springs).

Autumns do best with yellow undertones and rich, earthy colors such as camel, most browns, golden yellow, moss green, olive, mustard yellow and terracotta.

Are you a cool season -- winter or summer?
If your coloring is cool and clear, you are a winter. Winters have blue or pink undertones with fair skin -- olive or dark. Winters are often brunettes with dark eyes. Most African-Americans and Asians are in this category.

The primary colors and vibrant jewel tones are what winters look best in: black, navy, charcoal gray (for neutrals), hot pink, fuchsia, purple, periwinkle blue, icy blue, pure white, clear or blue-red and royal blue. Avoid oranges, medium browns and camel.

If your coloring is cool and muted, you are a summer. Summers have blue or pinkish undertones. They have pale, pink skin and have natural blonde hair or are brunettes with fair eyes.

Colors that are not overwhelming and strong are best for summers. Pick pastels such as soft pinks, rose, light blue, periwinkle blue, soft white, grey, lavender, peachy pink, clear red, chocolate brown. Avoid black next to the face.

Finding your seasons can take some experimentation, but it is well worth it. Instead of impulsively buying clothes, you'll know if a color is right before you bring it home. Selecting your wardrobe in the right styles along with the right colors will help you stand out.

Inspiration & Hope / God Spoke You Into Existence
August 22, 2007, 03:38:47 PM
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world.” (Jeremiah 1:5, NLT)

Dear one, you were started as an idea in the mind of God! Wow! You exist because the God of the universe thought you up.

The God who spoke the world into existence, the God who hung the moon and the stars, the God who set the sun in the sky â€" this creative Creator thought about you, was pleased by his thoughts and so he spoke you into your mother’s womb in the same way that he spoke the world into existence.

As my friend, Rick Warren, says in “The Purpose Driven Life,” you are not an accident. You were created by God at just the right time, in just the right place, with just the right SHAPE to serve God in this moment (“… For such a time is this …” Esther 4:14, NIV).

You are NOT a product of God’s assembly line; rather you are a unique creation, like a priceless painting from a grand master: “For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT)

Jokes and Humor / Salary Increase
August 21, 2007, 01:26:42 PM
Be contented with what you are doing and getting now.

After 2 years of selfless service, a man realized that he has not been promoted, no transfer, no salary increase no commendation and that the Company is not doing any thing about it. So he decided to walk up to his HR Manager one morning and after exchanging greetings, he told his HR Manager his observation. The boss looked at him, laughed and asked  him to sit down saying;  My   friend, you have not worked here for even one day.  The man was surprised to hear this, but the manager went on to explain.

Manager:- How many days are there in a year?
Man:- 365 days and some times 366
Manager:- how many hours make up a day?
Man:- 24 hours

Manager:- How long do you work in a day?
Man:- 8am to 4pm. i.e. 8 hours a day.

Manager:- So , what fraction of the day do you work in hours?
Man:- (He did some arithmetic and said 8/24 hours i.e. 1/3(one third)
Manager:- That is nice of you! What is one-third of 366 days?
Man:- 122 (1/3x366 = 122 in days)
Manager:- Do you come to work on weekends?
Man:- No sir
Manager:- How many days are there in a year that are weekends?
Man:- 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays equals to 104 days
Manager:- Thanks for that. If you remove 104 days from 122 days, how many days do you now have?
Man:- 18 days.
Manager:- OK! I do give you 2 weeks sick leave every year. Now remove that14 days from the 18 days left. How many days do you have remaining?
Man:- 4 days
Manager:- Do you work on New Year day?
Man:- No sir!

Manager: - Do you come to work on workers day?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- 2 days sir!

Manager:- Do you come to work on the (National holiday )?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- 1 day sir!

Manager:- Do you work on Christmas day?
Man:- No sir!

Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- None sir!

Manager:- So, what are you claiming?
Man:- I have understood, Sir. I did not realise that I was stealing Company money all these days.

Moral of the story-   NEVER GO TO HR FOR HELP!!!

Love Talk / A Mouse Story
August 21, 2007, 01:23:29 PM
A mouse
looked through the crack
in the wall
to see the farmer and his wife
open a package.

"What food
might this contain?"
The mouse wondered -
he was devastated
to discover
it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard,
the mouse
proclaimed the warning.

"There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!"

The chicken clucked
and scratched,
raised her head
and said,
"Mr. Mouse,
I can tell
this is a grave concern to you
but it is of no consequence to me.
I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse
turned to the pig
and told him,
"There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!"

The pig sympathized,
but said,
"I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse,
but there is nothing
I can do about it but pray.
Be assured
you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said,
"There is a mousetrap
in the house!
There is a mousetrap
in the house!"

The cow said,
"Wow, Mr. Mouse.
I'm sorry for you,
but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse
returned to the house,
head down and dejected,
to face the farmer's mousetrap-- alone.

That very night
a sound was heard
throughout the house --
like the sound
of a mousetrap
catching its prey.

The farmer's wife
rushed to see
what was caught.
In the darkness,
she did not see
it was a venomous snake
whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake
bit the farmer's wife.
The farmer
rushed her to the hospital
and she returned home
with a fever.
Everyone knows
you treat a fever
with fresh chicken soup,
so the farmer took his hatchet
to the farmyard
for the soup's
main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness
continued,
so friends and neighbors
came to sit with her
around the clock.
To feed them,
the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife
did not get well;
she died.
So many people came
for her funeral,
the farmer
had the cow slaughtered
to provide enough meat
for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all
from his crack in the wall
with great sadness.

So, the next time
you hear someone
is facing a problem
and think it doesn't
concern you,
remember --
when one of us is threatened,
we are all at risk.

We are all involved
in this journey
called life.
We must keep an eye out
for one another
and make an extra effort to
encourage one another

One of the best things
to hold onto in this world
is a friend

Love Talk / The Cab Ride
August 21, 2007, 01:07:02 PM
Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, and then drive away.

But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.
So I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then I returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly to ward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated".

"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice".

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I don't have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have very long." I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

"What route would you like me to take?" I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now."

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.

"Nothing," I said

"You have to make a living," she answered. "There are other passengers," I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said.

"Thank you."

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?

What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT ' YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID, BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL ' .

Health and Food / Heart Attacks and Warm Water
August 17, 2007, 03:54:14 PM
Not only about the warm water after your meal, but about heart attacks . The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine . Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer . It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

Love Talk / The Color Of Friendship
August 14, 2007, 01:06:58 PM
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel.
All claimed that they were the best.
The most important.
The most useful.
The favorite.

Green said:
"Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."

Blue interrupted:
"You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."

Yellow chuckled:
"You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange started next to blow her trumpet:
"I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."

Red could stand it no longer he shouted out:
"I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."

Purple rose up to his full height:
He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."

Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."

And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak:
"You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."

Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands.

The rain continued:
"From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another.

Love Talk / Around the Corner
August 14, 2007, 12:38:12 PM
Around the corner I have a friend
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone

And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
She knows I like her just as well
As in the days when I rang her bell,

And she rang mine.
We were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say "I will call on Jane"
"Just to show that I'm thinking of her"

But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner!-yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir-"
"Jane died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

If you love someone, tell them.
Remember always to say "what you mean".
Never be afraid to express yourself.
Take this opportunity to tell someone what they mean to you.
Seize the day and have no regrets.
Most importantly, stay close to your friends and family,
They have helped to make you the person you are today,

Inspiration & Hope / For the love of the game
August 04, 2007, 04:09:08 PM

by John Fischer

Last Thursday night, my son, Chandler, and I checked into a hotel near the Los Angeles International Airport in order to meet my wife who was due in late from a business trip. I was surprised to find the lobby bustling with people. It seemed like an odd hour for so many to be checking into a hotel. They were definitely traveling as a group and many of them were toting large duffle bags. When I saw baseball bat handles sticking out of one bag, I assumed they were some kind of team, but they were not a very well-heeled team in that they could not afford team bags. They were all traveling with their families. Kids were running all over the lobby and it did not take Chandler long to join them. Finally, I caught the red and green colors of Mexico on a laminated ticket pass that one of them was wearing around his neck and I wondered if this was Mexico's team in the World Baseball Classic â€" the guys that hours earlier had knocked Team USA out of the games with a convincing win. I would have expected much more of a display of color and uniformity from an international team.

“Are you guys on Mexico's baseball team?” I asked two families in the elevator. They nodded. “Are you still in it?” Yes, they shook their heads. “So, you just knocked us out?” They grinned ear to ear with satisfaction. “Well, congratulations!” I said as they spilled out onto their floor â€" women, children, players, and bats. One guy had signatures all over his jacket. Two others had Team USA hats signed, I assumed, by Major League players.

These were no-names from nowhere who had just knocked off their millionaire heroes and gotten their autographs in the process. These guys were playing only for pride and the love of the game, and they were carrying their own bags. You can bet that USA players never touch their own equipment outside the ball field.

I want to remember that picture: the smiles, the kids, the players, and the equipment bags strewn all over the lobby. Something about it seems true and pure â€" the kind of thing that will keep this game alive.

Something about this also seems right about our relationship with God. When you serve God, you carry your own stuff. No one is above being a servant. And we're in it for the love of the game, only this game is life. It's the real thing.

That guy may have autographs of big league players all over his jacket, but in his heart, he's got something better than all their million-dollar contracts combined â€" he's got the real game and the real reason to play it. And look who won.

Fashion Trend / Hair Color Keepers
August 02, 2007, 03:57:29 PM

“Color needs moisture in order to stay vibrant,” says Cristophe, founder of the Cristophe Beverly Hills hair care line and hairstylist to celebs like Nicolette Sheridan, Nicole Kidman, and Liv Tyler. “Loss of color is due to lack of moisture. Over-shampooing easily dries hair out and is a major mistake women make. The best way to protect hair is to wash every other day or less, rather than every day.”
“The more you shampoo, the more hair color will fade,” Sean Davis, co-owner and head colorist at the Tosler Davis Salon in NYC, agrees. “Always avoid deep-cleansing shampoos, which can contain alcohols like SD alcohol 40, an ingredient that is extremely drying.” Additionally, Cristophe suggests, women with color-treated hair should not use shampoos that contain any lauryl sulfates.

When you do wash your hair, be sure to use a shampoo and conditioner especially formulated to be gentle to colored tresses. “Seek out products with Heliogenol, a naturally occurring sunscreen derived from the sunflower that’s extremely effective in extending the life of color-treated hair,” Cristophe explains. “It protects the hair dye against the color-removing effects of shampoos and exposure to UV rays.”

Another ingredient to look for is soy protein, Davis says. It helps the hair cuticle stay smooth, and therefore, keeps color molecules from escaping.

If you get your color done at a salon, you can actually help fight fading before you even step foot out the door. “Getting a gloss treatment is the best way to keep your color in between sessions,” Cristophe says.

The gloss application (over your new color) actually seals the hair cuticle. Washing and rinsing your hair in water as cold as you can handle also helps keep the cuticle sealed, which, in turn, keeps your hue on your head.

Betty Rodriguez, a colorist/stylist at Aura Salon in Hollywood, Fla., with 23 years of experience, says that if you have a lot of gray, then it’s especially important to find a professional who truly knows how to cover it properly.

“Gray hair tends to be resistant to color,” she says. “You have to first give your gray a color-base to work with, because dyeing directly on gray strands won’t get a rich-color look. After the color-base -- or the filler color â€"-- is applied, then the desired shade can be used to get the color you want.”

Be sure that your colorist follows these steps to ensure maximum gray coverage.

Of course, proper touch-ups are essential to keeping your hue in top shape. But make sure your colorist isn’t unnecessarily damaging your hair when doing so.

“At the root, where there is regrowth, color will be applied as it was in the original process,” Rodriquez says. “On the remainder of the length of your strands, a gentler semi-permanent, deposit-only color should be used to enhance vibrance. You don’t want to make what is already color-processed any more porous; not only will the color not take because of the excessive porosity, but your hair can become overly damaged, and even break off.”

In the summer, tinted tresses are particularly prone to fading due to serious sun exposure.

“I recommend spraying your hair with an SPF-based conditioning product. This will block the harmful rays, and lock in moisture,” Cristophe suggests. “And always use an SPF conditioning spray or SPF leave-in conditioner right before swimming. Hair is like a sponge and will absorb the first thing that hits it. Instead of soaking up chlorine or salt water, your hair will have a protective layer of SPF to block their absorption.”

Of course, the summer’s simplest anti-fade tip: Get yourself a cool-looking hat, and when outdoors, wear it often!

World Daily News / Minneapolis Bridge Collapses
August 02, 2007, 09:31:24 AM
By PATRICK CONDON
Associated Press Writer

MINNEAPOLIS - The entire span of an interstate bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles, tons of concrete and twisted metal crashing into the water.

The Interstate 35W bridge, which stretches between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was in the midst of being repaired when it broke into several huge sections.

The Homeland Security Department had received no indications Wednesday night that the collapse was related to an act of terrorism, department spokesman Russ Knocke said in Washington.

"We continue to monitor the situation. At this time, there's no indication of a nexus to terrorism," Knocke said.

It was not clear how many people were injured. WCCO-AM reported that one body was seen being pulled from the area, covered with a blue sheet.

A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab, while at least eight cars and a truck were submerged in the river.

The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door.

Ramon Houge told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he was on his way home from work on the bridge when heard a rumbling noise, saw the ground collapse and cars go down.

Traffic was bumper to bumper and hundreds of people would have been involved, he said. He said cars backed up as best they could and he parked in a construction zone and was finally able to turn around and drive off the bridge. "It didn't seem like it was real," he said.

Dozens of vehicles were scattered and stacked on top of each other amid the rubble. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.

Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank. There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue vehicles were there. Divers were also in the water.

Gregory Wernick Sr., Rockford, Ill., drove over the bridge shortly before the collapse. He stopped to get a drink nearby and heard commotion so he went back.

"I figure I crossed about 10 minutes before it happened," he said. "That's just too close to call."

He was standing about 200 feet away on top of a parking ramp with large group of people.

"I've never seen anything like this," he said.

The Homeland Security Department had received no indications Wednesday night that the collapse was an act of terrorism, department spokesman Russ Knocke said in Washington.

"We continue to monitor the situation. At this time, there's no indication of a nexus to terrorism," Knocke said.

The arched bridge, which was built in 1967, rises about 64 feet above the river. Workers have been repairing the 40-year-old bridge's surface as part of improvements along that stretch of the interstate, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported on its Web site

Inspiration & Hope / 'The Great Coffee Scandal'
July 27, 2007, 08:36:15 AM
I'm sitting here this morning drinking my Starbucks French Roast and thinking about what seems so remarkable and complicated about how coffee came to be. I can just see some South American farmer sitting next to a coffea plant one day and suddenly seeing visions of shelling its red berries to get to the little bean inside. And once he saw that little bean, he would immediately know to dry it, roast it, grind it up, and pour hot water over it through a filter in order to get one of the most popular beverages in the world. I'm sure that's how it happened!

Don't you ever wonder about stuff like this or am I the only one? And doesn't it make you wonder how many other drinks or potions are still out there undiscovered? Why did we find the ones we found? Were we wired a certain way? Is it just random that we landed on coffee? Could it just as easily have gone another way and suddenly we are all drinking hot baba from the babao plant? (Don't go looking; I just made those up.)

All this tells me that we are not alone in not being an accident. That little bean inside the coffea berry is no accident either. God has built all sorts of beneficial secrets into his creation and then left us to discover them and use them. And this comes with responsibility as well because some of these secrets are harmful. That's all a part of the good and evil around us that makes life such a challenge.

All of this makes me stop dead in my tracks and go, “God, you are so awesome! To have plants, animals, natural resources, and an environment in which they can all thrive together is one thing. The brains to make something out of all these resources, and the potential to use what we make for good or for evil are even more incredible gifts you have given your creatures. Who could have thought up a God like you? Certainly none of us.”

So enjoying my coffee today has turned into an unplanned act of worship. It's amazing how you can access thoughts of God through the simplest channels. It's really not that hard once you start thinking down this road. That we can go about our work and never give a thought to what's behind the world we deal with every day is the real scandal

Health and Food / Keeping Your Eyes Healthy
July 26, 2007, 08:38:30 AM
Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but they're also your main doorway to the world around you. Something most of us take for granted unless something goes wrong. Our eyes are truly amazing, functioning like a high-tech video camera attached to a supercomputer. Science has not even come close in replicating them.

To keep your eyes healthy and functioning optimally, especially with age, you must get regular eye checkups. Problems like glaucoma, cataracts, and even diabetes (or diabetes-related eye problems) can be picked up early and managed, preventing bigger problems down the line.

In terms of everyday activities, take frequent breaks from computer screens to avoid eye strain. Don't forget your sunglasses outdoors, which help protect your eyes from UV damage. When sports call for eye protection, wear the appropriate gear, glasses, or goggles.

And remember, what you put in your mouth affects your eyes. Strive to eat foods rich in vitamin A and beta carotene, such as cooked carrots, tomatoes, and green leafy vegetables. Include fish in your diet and seek out other good sources of omega-3s. An orange a day keeps the eye doctor away.

If your eye is ever injured, seek immediate care and you'll often prevent a long-term problem. As one of the team docs for the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, I can tell you that having an eye doctor present at every game has been extremely valuable for our players (whose eyes are all too often whacked, poked, and/or elbowed) over the years. Your eyes are just as important -- keep them healthy!

Fashion Trend / The Greatest Beauty Inventions Ever
July 26, 2007, 08:36:09 AM
Before, I introduce you to some of the most paramount beauty creations of today; I would like to take you through a trip down beauty memory lane. After all, it’s because of these beautiful innovations that we are soaking in anti-bacterial soap and cellulite-reducing lotion today.

Although the type, reason and use of cosmetics differ between cultures and time periods in history, there’s no denying that beauty practices have always played a big role in society.

For those of you who despise the pungent smell of body odor, you better thank your early ancestors for caring about their personal scent. There is no way to document the first use of soap but it is quite possible that it could have been during prehistoric times.

However, the first tangible evidence of soap making is found in ancient Rome. Pliny, the Roman historian, described soap being made from goat's tallow and caustic zed wood ashes. He also wrote of common salt being added to make the soap hard. One thing is for sure, nice smell has always been in style. As early as 10,000 B.C., men and women used scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin and mask the body of odor.

Next in line of the THANK GOODNESS YOU WERE INVENTED list is the hair brush. The desire to achieve tangle-free hair is nothing new. While the earliest evidence of brushes were found in cave paintings more than 2 million years ago and used to apply pigment to cave walls, brushes usefulness for grooming caught on quickly. In 1898, Ms. Lyda D. Newman patented the first hairbrush with synthetic bristles.

Raise your hands if you’re SURE that you can confidently raise your arms without offending everything and everyone around you. Chances are if those arms are up in the air right now, you are wearing deodorant. If you are, let me be the first to say, thank you! Now, it’s time to express gratitude to the architect who built this wonderful sweet smell contraption of success.

Deodorant as we know it today started with the original formulation for Mum deodorant that was invented in 1888, by an unknown inventor from Philadelphia. Generally recognized as being the first ever product to prevent odor, the inventor promptly trademarked his invention and distributed it through his nurse under the name of "Mum."

In the late 1940s, Helen Barnett Diserens joined the Mum production team. A suggestion by a colleague inspired Helen to develop an underarm deodorant based on the same principle as a newfangled invention called the 'ball point' pen. This new type of deodorant applicator was tested in the United States in 1952, and marketed under the name of Ban Roll-On. The first anti-perspirant aerosol deodorant was launched in 1965.

What can take a dull face and make it blossom, shave years off a person’s appearance and transform a person’s entire look from classy business to glamour goddess in a matter of seconds? You guessed it, almighty marvelous makeup! The earliest historical record of makeup comes from the 1st Dynasty of Egypt (c. 3100-2907 B.C.).

Since then, archaeologists continued to find evidence of makeup throughout time. From early Romans darkening their eyelashes and eyelids, to the Italian Renaissance use of lead to lighten the face, there’s no denying the significant role makeup has played throughout history.

Beauty products have a come a long way throughout the years. While it’s important to give gratitude to our forefathers of beauty, it’s equally important to praise the modern-day beauty geniuses who continue to give us improve ways to beautify our lives. Check out some of the top beauty inventions of today:

Fashion Trend / 8-Steps to Smaller Pores
July 20, 2007, 02:23:18 PM
What causes large pores? With age and frequent stretching from being clogged with dead skin cells and oil, the pores start to sag. When they fill up with sebum (oil), the sebum oxidizes and turns dark which makes the pores more obvious.

I'll be honest with you, there are actually no ways to permanently shrink pores once they have stretched. There are, however, lots of things that you can do to minimize the appearance of your pores and to prevent them from getting large:

1. The first step is to use skin care products that increase levels of collagen and elastin which will prevent the pores from stretching. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C, retinol that increase collagen production and products that increase elastin levels.

2. It is also important to keep skin clear of oil and dead skin cells, which will only stretch your pores and make them appear larger. Use products with alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid and phytic acid) and chestnut extract which will exfoliate your skin, thus improving its texture.

3. Salicylic acid is another good bet, particularly for oily or acne-prone types, as it's the best ingredient out there for targeting and clearing out oil in the pores. (When oil, or sebum, clogs pores, blackheads appear - making pores that much more prominent.) Salicylic acid can penetrate the fats in sebum much better than glycolic acid, which makes it an ideal treatment to improve the appearance of pores.

4. Decreasing sebum production is also a way to prevent clogged and stretched pores. One ingredient that is said to have the to ability to reduce sebum production is NDGA (Nordihydraguaiaretic Acid).

5. Prescription-strength retinoids and over-the-counter products with retinol will decrease oil production, increase collagen and elastin production, and hasten your skin's cell-turnover - giving dead skin cells even fewer opportunities to clog and stretch your pores, while strengthening pore walls.

6. Another trick to minimizing the appearance of your pores is to cause the skin around them to swell slightly; as it does, the pores will appear to contract. Apply topical vitamin C to your skin (you can find it in a variety of facial serums) or try a professional light procedure like IPL (Intense pulsed Light). IPL provides an immediate benefit and is worth every penny!

7. The final steps to smaller pores simply require good skin care habits. First and foremost: Wash makeup and sunscreen off every night.

8. And if you do develop pimples, avoid popping or picking at them. That will only stretch your pores further and can lead to scarring.

Bible Study / Faith in your Fear
July 10, 2007, 01:26:52 PM
"Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27

The Bible reveals that God knows we tend toward fear, particularly as we respond to uncertainty and change. Yet the Bible also reveals that God is the only thing in this world â€" or out of it â€" that is certain and unchanging.

Is it possible we have more faith in our fear than we do in God?

No matter how complex life becomes, it still comes down to the basic choice. Will we place our confidence in the All-Powerful, Supreme Being and Sole Authority of the Universe or will we place greater confidence in our fears?

Although the choice is black-or-white basic, God knows it’s not simple. It involves a challenging stretch, and that’s why God continually reminds us, “Fear not, for I am with you.”

God is clear that our abilities, our resources â€" even a belief in the myth of luck â€" will not be what strengthens us for the journey. (Philippians 4:13) We fear we can’t do the things God calls us to do, and we fear that God will not protect us or provide for us â€" and so we choose to fear, embracing the unholy lie that our circumstances are bigger than the One True God.

Inspiration & Hope / Pain
July 10, 2007, 09:20:04 AM
Pain will pass but each time it happens, it is a walk to remember. It is a gentle reminder that we have to constantly see things from God’s perspective. We do not always have to understand everything; in our limited capacity as humans we may not be able to handle the truth. That said, maybe God knows that the mystery of His ways are better left unknown, the same way some things are better left unsaid; and trusting Him gives every sad thing a sense of purpose where there none is to be found, enables the heart to feel a quiet acceptance when none can’t be felt.

Pain may always be unwelcome, but it does not always have to be so loathsome.

Philippine Daily News / "Desaparacidos"
July 05, 2007, 01:12:48 PM
Itinanghal ng The CORRESPONDENTS,
Ulat ni Bernadette Sembrano

“Aatras kaim, aatras kami!

If he didn’t go into show business and politics, former president Joseph Estrada would have probably made a fortune as an architect.

Having no formal training but just relying on his eye and personal style, he drew, designed and chose the furnishings and finishing for his Spanish villa inspired Presidential Library inside his property in Tanay, Rizal.

Estrada bought the 15-hectare property in 1963 at two pesos per square meter and used it as a movie backlot -- using cogon covered hills, rock streams and small forests to shoot cowboy movies with best friend, the late Fernando Poe Jr.

Estrada started building the Presidential Museum in 2002. He picked a small hill in his property as the site of the museum because it was his favorite spot to sit and pray.

“This is a labor of love,” Estrada recounts while sitting inside the Presidential Library surrounded by the portraits of all the Philippine Presidents hanging on the walls.

“I learned to love this place ever since. Maybe God has a purpose for bringing me here because this is where I pray.”

“When I was still a movie actor, I’m always here every weekend. I pray every morning once the sun rises because God said he is the light, the way and the truth,” Estrada added.

His detention gave him the time to look over the property and plan his museum. He saw the museum as an opportunity to tell his story including his ouster as President in 2001.

“I don’t like wasting my time doing nothing so I’d rather do something. If I’m no longer around, people will see the truth, what really happened,” he said.

One of the main sections of the museum is EDSA DOS,  described as “A Dark Time For Democracy.” The display’s main theme is black and prominently displayed is an enlarged mugshot of  “Joseph Ejercito Estrada cc# 26558" after his arrest in April 2001.

Asked why he included this, Estrada said: “That’s part of history, I want the people to know the truth why I was thrown into prison.”

The museum
The stucco and red roofed museum is located on a hilltop near the main entrance of Estrada’s Tanay resthouse. A Philippine flag flies on the flagpole located at the center of the cobblestone driveway.

A bronze statue of a waving Estrada stands at the entrance of the Joseph Ejercito Estrada Museum and Archives. Also at the entrance is an image of a carabao made of white granite, which was donated by China. Estrada’s pet Senate bill (no pun intended) was Senate Bill 1165, which created the Philippine Carabao Center to propagate and promote the Philippine carabao.

Inside, the first thing that will greet visitors is a wall of photographs showcasing Estrada’s accomplishments as an actor before he became president. On  the wall hang his numerous awards including one for Famas Best Actor.

The tour is divided by the various chapters of Estrada’s life. The first display is entitled “The Actor’s Got Heart: 1957 â€" 1989.” Among the displays are life-like mannequins of the former president in various roles including the grease-gun-wielding Asiong Salonga and that of Estrada holding aloft a baby in the movie “Ito Ang Pinoy.”

Positioned near the Asiong Salonga Erap mannequin are two old film cameras stamped with “Joseph Estrada Productions.”

In a glass case is his tuxedo and black Converse rubber shoes, which he wore in the 1965 movie, "Deadly Pinoy."

The next display's title is “This Mayor Performs: 1969 - 1986.” Unlike the movie displays, the Estrada mannequins are dressed in short sleeve polo barongs â€" similar to the ones he wore as mayor of San Juan. There is also an explanation on why Estrada entered politics and how he was belittled as "merely an actor."

“All these so called elitists and intellectuals, they were all laughing at me and it was only the masses who were behind me,” Estrada recounted.

And then there is Estrada “The Pro-Poor Legislator: 1987 â€" 1992” and Estrada as the “crimebusting Vice-President: 1992â€"1998.”

Highlighted in the last display are Estrada’s campaign as head of the Presidential AntiCrime Commission, including the killing of Red Scorpion Group leader Joey de Leon.

The next display is  “The Warrior President: 1998 â€" 2001.” Highlights of the section are the actual jeepney used by Estrada in the Jeep Ni Erap campaign; a diorama of Estrada wearing an army uniform and raising the Philippine flag at the recaptured MILF camp, and; a replica of Estrada’s desk and office inside Malacanang.

Around the replica office are Estrada photos with other world leaders and business tycoons: US President Bill Clinton, Chinese President Jiang Zemin, South African President Nelson Mandela, the late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Microsoft’s Bill Gates.

The final display is the dark, black themed “A Dark Time For Democracy”, detailing Estrada’s ouster from Malacanang. To this day, Estrada maintains he did not resign and that he was illegally removed from office.

The display highlights various commentaries from foreign media, which criticized EDSA Dos. “Even the foreign press said it was wrong.”

In one part of the museum is a small theater were the main highlight is an hour-long documentary, produced by the Estrada camp, highlighting Estrada’s political career and what they said is the real story behind his ouster.

The documentary blames the oligarchs and the political elite as those behind his ouster. It said Estrada's order to look into anomalies committed in the past administration and his refusal to give in to demands of businesses, especially on water, power and basic utilities, led the elite to move against him.

Estrada’s documentary identifies these oligarchs and elite, and highlights Chief Justice Hilario Davide’s now famous ambush interview  saying he (Davide) would administer the oath of acting president on then-vice-president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Outside the museum is a black granite tomb, where he wants to be buried, which overlook his Tanay property. Inscribed at the wall beside the tomb is a quote from Estrada’s Inaugural speech: Walang tutulong sa Pilipino kung hindi kapwa Pilipino.

The Presidential Library displays the different gifts he received from other heads of state as well as books on leadership and Philippine history. Also prominently displayed is Estrada’s biography.

Forgiveness, politics
Five years on, Estrada claims he has forgiven those who were behind his impeachment.

“I’ve talked to the former vice-president Teofisto Guingona.  We’re very, very good friends. He was the first one who made the privilege speech in the Senate, the 'I Accuse' speech. I was even kidding him, 'Now, you can say 'I Acquit,'” Estrada joked.

As both defense and prosecution gave their summations on the Estrada plunder case, the former president believes that based on the merits of the case, he would be acquitted of plunder and perjury. He recounted how emissaries from the Arroyo administration offered not to file charges against him if he left the country, which he flatly refused. To this date, he insists he will make no deals with the Arroyo administration.

“I want to be acquitted on the merits of the case, not because I had negotiations with them,” he stressed.

Estrada is also looking toward the future and 2010 presidential election. His frontrunners are: Senators Panfilo Lacson, Manuel Roxas and Manny Villar. He admits he has not decided on who to support but tacitly acknowledges the opposition must unite by 2010.

On the outcome of the Senate race, he sees the opposition win as the result of a protest vote against the present leadership. “People are suffering. They claim that the economy is moving forward… but majority of our people, specially the masses don’t feel it,” he said as he lounges in a chair inside his Presidential Library.

When asked about the defeat of his political rival Chavit Singson, Estrada wryly smiled and said: “God is not sleeping and they will be put in their proper places.”

He admits that he is disappointed with the defeat of Tito Sotto, whom he still considers a close friend. While acknowledging politics forced Sotto to join the administration party, this has not diminished their friendship.

“Naaawa ako dahil kumpareng buo ko yan… I don’t know what happened,” he said, “But our friendship is beyond politics â€" we have been friends for a long time.”

Will he run again for President  if he is acquitted? Estrada said he has had enough and it's time to let the young people serve.

Doing a Nixon or a Carter
If given a choice, the former president sees himself as a peacemaker or in his description: Doing “a Nixon or a Carter.”

“If they will give me a chance to go out in Mindanao or with the New People's Army, just to unite the country [I will do it],” he said.

In the end, Estrada wants to be remembered for one thing: The masses made Joseph Estrada.

“I want to be known when I’m no longer president as the President who championed the cause of the masses. That’s why I said in my museum, whatever I am now, I owe it to the Filipino masses.”

BUCHAREST, Romania -- An heir of Romania's former royal family put "Dracula's Castle" in Transylvania up for sale Monday, hoping to secure a buyer who will respect "the property and its history," a U.S.-based investment company said.

The Bran Castle, perched on a cliff near Brasov in mountainous central Romania, is a top tourist attraction because of its ties to Prince Vlad the Impaler, the warlord whose cruelty inspired Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula."

Legend has it that Vlad, who earned his nickname because of the way he tortured his enemies, spent one night in the 1400s at the castle.

Bran Castle was built in the 14th century to serve as a fortress to protect against the invading Ottoman Turks. The royal family moved into the castle in the 1920s, living there until the communist regime confiscated it from Princess Ileana in 1948.

After being restored in the late 1980s and following the end of communist rule in Romania, it gained popularity as a tourist attraction known as "Dracula's Castle."

In May 2006, the castle was returned to Princess Ileana's son, Archduke Dominic Habsburg.

Habsburg, a 69-year-old New York architect, pledged to keep it open as a museum until 2009 and offered to sell the castle last year to local authorities for $80 million, but the offer was rejected.

On Monday, he put the castle up for sale "to the right purchaser under the right circumstances," said Michael Gardner, chief executive of Baytree Capital, the company representing Habsburg. "The Habsburgs are not in the business of managing a museum."

No price was announced, though Gardner predicted the castle would sell for more than $135 million. He added that Habsburg will only sell it to a buyer "who will treat the property and its history with appropriate respect."

Habsburg said in a statement: "Aside from the castle's connection to one of the most famous novels ever written, Bran Castle is steeped in critical events of European history dating from the 14th century to the present."

According to a contract signed when the castle was returned, the government pays rent to Habsburg to run the castle as a museum for three years, charging admission. After 2009, Habsburg will have full control of the castle, Gardner said.

The government has priority as a buyer if it can match the best offer for the castle, he said.

Opposition lawmakers have claimed the government's decision to return the castle to Habsburg was illegal because of procedural errors.

In recent years, the castle -- complete with occasional glimpses of bats flying around its ramparts at twilight -- has attracted filmmakers looking for a dramatic backdrop for films about Dracula and other horror movies.

Some 450,000 people visit the castle every year, Gardner said.

SANTIAGO, Chile - Scientists on Tuesday blamed global warming for the disappearance of a glacial lake in remote southern Chile that faded away in just two months, leaving just a crater behind.
The disappearance of the lake in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park was discovered in late May by park rangers, who were stunned to find a 130-foot deep crater where a large lake had been.

After flying over the lake Monday scientists said they were able to draw preliminary conclusions that point to climate change as the leading culprit for the lake's disappearance.

They suggested the melting of nearby glaciers raised the lake's level to the point where the increased water pressure caused part of a glacier acting as a dam to give way. Water in the lake flowed out of the breach, into a nearby fiord and then to the sea, said Andres Rivera, a glaciologist with Chile's Center of Scientific Studies.

Rivera, accompanied by an expert from the Chilean Antarctic Institute, flew over the site in a navy airplane, taking hundreds of photographs.

"On one side of the Bernardo glacier one can see a large hole or gap, and we believe that's where the water flowed through," Rivera said in a navy communique. "This confirms that glaciers in the region are retreating and getting thinner."

He said that the bottom of the vanished lake again has some water, likely from the melting ice.

Similar phenomenon have occurred before in the southern Magallanes region.

As glaciers retreat lakes form behind natural dams of ice or moraine, earth and stones pushed up by a glacier. Those relatively weak dams can be breached suddenly, causing the lake to drain.

The advance and retreat of glaciers is part of the normal dynamics of the Patagonia but climate change was distorting the process, Rivera said.

"This would not be happening if the temperature had not increased," Rivera said.

The navy communique said the missing lake was the smaller of a two-lake system. The larger one remains but at a lower level.

Health and Food / New Drug Deletes Bad Memory
July 04, 2007, 03:15:49 PM
Do you have a really bad memory, or past heartache, that you would prefer to forget?

Researchers at Harvard and McGill University (in Montreal) are working on an amnesia drug that blocks or deletes bad memories. The technique seems to allow psychiatrists to disrupt the biochemical pathways that allow a memory to be recalled.

In a new study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the drug propranolol is used along with therapy to "dampen" memories of trauma victims. They treated 19 accident or rape victims for ten days, during which the patients were asked to describe their memories of the traumatic event that had happened 10 years earlier. Some patients were given the drug, which is also used to treat amnesia, while others were given a placebo.

A week later, they found that patients given the drug showed fewer signs of stress when recalling their trauma.

Similar research led by Professor Joseph LeDoux has been carried out at New York University on rats; scientists were able to remove a specific memory from the brains of rats while leaving the rest of the animals' memories intact. An amnesia drug called U0126 was administered.

The rats were trained to associate two musical tones with a mild electrical shock so that when they heard either of the tones they would brace themselves for a shock. The researchers then gave half the rats the drug when playing one of the musical tones.

After the treatment, the rats that had been given the drug no longer associated that particular tone with an imminent shock but still braced themselves upon hearing the second tone, demonstrating only one memory had been deleted.

Science fiction fans have a number of associations with the idea of banishing unwanted memories. In the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey play lovers who have a falling out. Winslet's character goes to a company called Lacuna, Inc. to have her memories of the relationship removed; Carrey's character also has the procedure performed (see photo).

In the film, the process involves showing the person a memento of the relationship and then encouraging them to bring up specific memories while an electric shock is given. Not to give away the film, but this technique does not work as planned.

Here's a memory you might have repressed. In the classic Star Trek episode Requiem for Methuselah, Jim Kirk becomes enamored of Rayna, a beautiful woman who turns out to be an android created by a five thousand year old man who calls himself Flint, who was also Leonardo DaVinci and Shakespeare (among many others) during the course of his long life. Flint wants Rayna for himself, Kirk wants her, she loves them both, her circuits overload resulting in her death, and Kirk is devastated.

Finally, Spock saves the day by applying a little-known property of the Vulcan mind-meld, which is that he can make Kirk forget about his sorrows and return to duty (see touching photo).

Science fiction legend Philip K. Dick was one of the first to make use of this idea. In his 1966 short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale he writes about selectively erasing memories:

Someone, probably at a government military-sciences lab, erased his conscious memories; all he know was that going to Mars meant something special to him, and so did being a secret agent...

Distance is not the end of the world in a relationship

Although you may feel like you are losing faith in your relationship at times, hold fast and trust your heart!

Truly believe that love & relationships are what make your life special, and that ones built on love & understanding are always worth preserving, regardless of the miles that may separate two people

Love Talk / What is Love?
June 30, 2007, 02:52:47 PM
Proactive people make love a verb. Love is something you do: the sacrifices you make, the giving of self, like a mother bringing a newborn into the world. If you want to study love, study those who sacrifice for others. even for people who offend or do not love in return. If you are a parent, look at the love you have for the children you sacrificed for. Love is a value that is actualized through loving actions. Proactive people subordinate feelings to values. Love, the feeling, can be recaptured.

Jokes and Humor / Trust Mom
June 30, 2007, 02:40:22 PM
Ben invited his mother over for dinner. During the meal, his mother couldn't help noticing how beautiful Ben's roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between Ben and his roommate and this only made her more curious.

Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Ben and the roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, Ben volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Allison and I are just roommates."

About a week later, Allison came to Ben and said, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. "You don't suppose she took it, do you?"

Ben said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll write her a letter just to be sure."

So he sat down and wrote: "Dear Mother, I'm not saying you 'did' take a gravy ladle from my house, and I'm not saying you 'did not' take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner."

Several days later, Ben received a letter from his mother which read:

"Dear Son, I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Allison, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with Allison. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now. Love, Mom"

Jokes and Humor / Wife knows best
June 30, 2007, 02:38:19 PM
A husband is watching footie when his wife interrupts, "Honey, the hallway light has been flickering for weeks. Can you fix it?"

He angrily looks at her and says, "Fix the light? Now? Does it look like I have a G.E Logo printed on my forehead? I don't think so!"

"Well, what about the fridge door. It doesn't close right"

"Fix the Fridge Door??? Does it look like I have Westinghouse written on my forehead? I don't think so!"

"Ok", she says, "then you could at least fix the front door steps. They're about to break."

"I ain't no damn Carpenter and I don't wanna fix any steps," he says. "Does it look like I've got ACE hardware written on my forehead? I don't think so. I've had enough. I'm off to the bar!"

After a couple of hours at the local, he feels guilty and decides to go home and make up with his wife. As he walks up to the house he notice the steps are fixed. As he goes into the house he sess the hall light is working, and as he goes to get a beer, he notices the fridge door is fixed."

"Darling, how'd you get all this fixed?"

She replies: "Well, after you left I was sitting outside crying when a nice young man asked what was wrong. I told him, he offered to do all the repairs and all I had to do was to either bake a cake or go to bed with him."

He said, "So, what kind of cake did you bake him?"

She replied, "Helllllloooooo.......Do you see Betty Crocker written on my forehead?"

Inspiration & Hope / Knowing What Your Rope Is
June 21, 2007, 10:55:03 AM
Shortly after learning I had a rare type of breast cancer, one that would require a year of aggressive treatment, I decided to cut back on some of my activities.
I stopped by my son's classroom to explain to his teacher why I would no longer be coming to help every Monday morning.  When I became upset as I told her about my diagnosis and the long months of treatment that lay ahead, she took both my hands, held them tightly, and told me this story about her friend Ann.
One summer, Ann decided to go river rafting.  Everyone signed up for the trip had to learn the basic procedures and safety measures.  As the instructor outlined the dangers, Ann became scared.  What if her raft capsized or was dashed against the rocks?  What if she were thrown into the rapidly churning water and carried downstream before anyone could rescue her?
The instructor had one answer to all of Ann's anxious questions: "There is a rope that is attached to the perimeter of the raft.  Whatever happens, hold on to that rope.  Never let go.  Just hold on."  And do you know what?  An unexpected storm came up, and Ann's raft did capsize, but she remembered her instructor's words.  She held on to that rope, and she survived.
I stared at my friend, wondering what this story had to do with me.  "Know what your rope is, Myra," she counseled.  "And hold on.  Whatever it is.  Through whatever happens.  Just keep holding on."
She gave me a hug and returned to her classroom, leaving me to ponder her words.  What was my rope?  What would I hold on to in the days ahead?  What would help me survive my perilous journey through the unknown world of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery?  It didn't take me long to find the answer.  My rope would be the love of my family and friends, who I knew would support me through whatever lay ahead.
As my treatment progressed, that rope was often at hand.  It was there during my chemotherapy when my husband said, "Lean on me.  I'll be here to give you strength.  If you can't go on, I'll carry you until you're strong enough to continue on your own."
It was there the day of my surgery when a dear friend hung a silk carp, the Japanese symbol of courage, in my hospital room.  It was there on Mother's Day when, unsure of what lay ahead, my daughter gave me an opal, the symbol of hope.  And it was there one night after I had lost my hair, when I found fifty cents under my pillow with a note from the "hair fairy."
There were times during the year when I didn't get along with the people whose closeness and support I so desperately needed.  I argued with my children about their refusal to attend a support group for families dealing with cancer.  I fought with my husband over the handling of certain household matters.
In the past, I had been able to handle disagreements such as these easily, but at this particular time, I couldn't tolerate the feelings of loneliness and isolation that followed arguments.  On these occasions, it felt as though the rope was slipping out of my hands and I feared the dark waters would engulf me.  These were the most frightening days of all, because I knew I couldn't make it through a year of treatment alone.  The love and laughter my family and friends gave me were just as essential to my survival as the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
I discovered that Aristotle was right when he said, "Friendship is a thing most necessary to life, since without friends, no one would choose to live, though possessed of all other advantages."
And so throughout the entire year, I held on.  I held on when it appeared as though my tumor wasn't shrinking as it was supposed to in response to the chemotherapy.  I held on when a bone scan revealed a dark spot on a rib that looked suspiciously like bone cancer.  I held on as though my life depended on it, because it did.
I survived my journey.  My raft, although battered by storms and raging currents, is still afloat.  I often hear my friend's words echoing in my mind: "Know what your rope is, Myra."  I do, and I'm still holding on.

Bible Study / In Our Humble Opinion
June 19, 2007, 09:52:58 AM
The thing is, most of us approach humility in one of two ways:

· The first approach is consciously acting as if we are humble. We create a false humility by trying to imitate what we think humility looks like.

· The second approach is to assume we’re not worthy, that we’re second class and permanently assigned to the back of the bus.

Neither of these approaches reflect authentic, biblical humility. The biblical approach to humility means you understand exactly who you are â€" but more importantly â€" you understand exactly whose you are, and that God has placed you where he wants you, for such a time as this. In this way, your humility is not attached to your self-esteem.

In other words, you don’t have to think less of yourself. Rather, you begin to think more of God, and you begin to agree that you are totally dependent upon God, and from this emerges a Christ-like humility. You’re no longer burdened by having to know all the answers or to be in control of everything.

It is God’s job to solve the problems of the world. Your job is to walk in humble obedience to what God tells you to do.

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each
morning by eight o'clock , with his hair fashionably coiffed and shaved
perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.
His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After
many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled
sweetly when told his room was ready.
As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description
of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his
window.
"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just
been presented with a new puppy.
"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.
"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room
or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I arrange
my mind. I already decided to love it. "It's a decision I make every morning
when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the
difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out
of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day
and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life.
Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.
So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank
account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am
still depositing." Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.

2. Free your mind from worries.

3. Live simply.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less.

Inspiration & Hope / Not By The Rules We Keep
June 18, 2007, 04:10:15 PM

How To Tips / How to feel more attractive?
June 15, 2007, 03:47:48 PM
From Psychology Today

1. Size Up Wisely
Think of professional beauties as aesthetic marvels (and genetic accidents). Don't compare yourself with them.

2. Reflect on Your Relationships
Partners have a big impact on how we view our looks. If we get a steady dose of fondness and acceptance, "it's like being in the glow of a romantic candlelit dinnerâ€"we are seen in the best possible light," says McGrath.

3. It's Not About You!
"Show up at a party with a group of friends and you'll automatically appear more attractive," says Carducci. "It's social capital -- it suggests that you know how to lead others and bring them together."

4. You're Instrumental
If you think of your body as an instrument, you'll see it as something that you can shape and transform,"

5. Get an Inner Makeover
Give more airtime to other aspects of your self-image. "Consciously think of why you are desirable to other people -- perhaps because they respect your competence or because you are warm and interesting. In the long run, these characteristics are more important to attraction than physical looks."

6. Be a Singular Sensation
I'm trying to let people know, 'I'm here and let's have a good time.' When you're in clothes that reflect who you are, you make it easier for others to talk to you -- and it's not how beautiful you are, but how approachable you are."

7. Get Older, Feel Better
We dread getting older, but there is evidence that people feel more attractive with age. "Older women tend to shed their self-consciousness

8. Beauty Is No Panacea
On average, attractive people are not happier than their homelier peers. A sense of optimism and hope, gratifying relationships and meaning and purpose in your life have much more influence on your happiness than do your looks

Why Sex Is Good for Your Health
By Glenn Mueller
eDiets Staff Writer

Go have sex and call me in the morning? While you might not get this advice from your doctor just yet, there is an increasing amount of research to support the idea that sex is good for your health. Some public health experts even say that sex is as important to your health as diet and exercise.
One member of the medical community who is spreading the word about the health benefits of sex is best-selling author and radio personality Dr. Dean Edell. The anonymity of talk radio often persuades listeners to ask Dr. Edell questions about sex that they aren't comfortable discussing with their own physicians or their spouses or partners. "As a doctor I push it, because it is important for people to relax about the subject," Dr. Edell tells eDiets.

The physician broadcaster admits that he may be more comfortable about the topic than many people because of his professional medical background. However, Dr. Edell is quick to bring up the fact that "every one of us owes our existence to a sexual act."

"Sex is the most directly accessible route to ecstasy that God has given us, and we've turned it into a menace," says Dr. Edell. "For centuries societal dogma has carried the overt and covert message that sex is bad for your body."

Not only are these assumptions incorrect, but also there is increasing evidence that the opposite may be true. According to Dr. Edell, a healthy sex life may not only be a sign of good health, but also a cause of it.

"A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association 15 years ago declared that the more orgasms a man has, the longer he is likely to live," Dr. Edell says.

Another study Dr. Edell mentions in his books was conducted by researchers at Queens University in Belfast. Nearly 1,000 men from Wales, who ranged in age from 45 to 49, were tracked for a 10-year period. The men with the lowest frequency of orgasm were found to have twice the risk of death from all causes, but especially from heart attack. The researchers concluded that the men with the greatest frequency of sex had a 50 percent reduction in mortality rates.

"That puts sex right up there with eating five servings of veggies a day and all the exercise you can handle," writes Dr. Edell.

Dr. Edell offers several possible explanations why sex is good for your health, including the energy expended during the activity, the overall effect of sex on your well-being and the inevitable reduction in stress that should accompany sex. He even says that there are reports of back pain and arthritis improving or disappearing during sex.

"If you ask me, pumping up your sex life to improve your health and lengthen your life sounds a lot more fun than eating sprouts or trudging on your treadmill," Dr. Edell writes.

However, if you think hitting the singles bars to find a different partner every night is the best way to develop a healthy sex life, you are not following this doctor’s orders. Dr. Edell offers a simple prescription to ensure great sex: monogamy.

"I believe the best sex can be had in monogamous relationships," Dr. Edell says. In fact, he feels a person with more than one partner is admitting that no one person gives them enough satisfaction to sit around and explore more deeply.

"People invest years in improving their golf swing but cannot see the logic dictating that something as intricate as sex can take two people lots of practice to explore and perfect,” Dr. Edell writes. “Casual relationships, one-night stands and short-term relationships cannot foster great sex."

As usual, Dr. Edell provides plenty of scientific research to support his opinion. Researchers from the University of Chicago documented that there is "more emotional satisfaction and physical pleasure in a monogamous relationship" than a person can find with multiple partners. According to Chicago's National Opinion Research Center, a connection also has been found between marriage and more and better sex. This study found that 41 percent of married couples have sex at least twice a week, which is almost double the rate for non-cohabiting people. In addition, 75 percent of the married women surveyed claimed they "always or usually" achieved orgasm during sex, compared with 62 percent of the single women.

“Sex is really a family issue,” Dr. Edell says. “Couples who enjoy great sex together are more likely to stay together. It is as simple as that.”

In his latest book, Dr. Edell describes sex as the perfect antidote for stress, depression and the complexities of modern life. “But we don't quite know the best way to communicate the fact that great sex -- the real thing, not the poor substitute seen in the movies -- is found within the context of a committed, loving relationship,” Dr. Edell writes.

Dr. Edell says the biggest reasons for this problem are the stresses of modern life and the distorted way sex is portrayed in our culture. “All we do is use sex to sell products,” Dr. Edell says. “We think we’re sexy, but we’re not.”

Dr. Edell says the blatant use of sexual images in our media does not indicate openness, and he points to the fact that these images often are used to promote products or events that have nothing to do with sex. According to Dr. Edell, the act of sex -- which should be the greatest ongoing celebration of a primary relationship -- has been twisted into nothing more than a sales and marketing tool. Meanwhile, he complains that an open discussion of sensuality is still repressed in our culture.

One survey revealed that 90 percent of physicians agreed that many serious medical problems could be averted if patients were only more willing to talk about sex and other sensitive topics. “On my radio show, I am constantly reminded how ashamed and embarrassed many people still are about sex,” Dr. Edell says.

“Women don't want to get mammograms. Guys are embarrassed to have their prostate examined. We have a real problem here, and I refuse to stop talking about it.”
