Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- The death toll rose to at least 25 on Wednesday, a day after the Mount Merapi volcano erupted in Indonesia, officials said.

The volcano injured 28 others in Merapi, and displaced more than 22,000 residents, said Ibu Neulis Zuliasri, of the National Disaster Agency.

The volcano erupted at least three times Tuesday, forcing thousands of nearby residents to flee.

Mount Merapi, which looms on the horizon north of the major city of Yogyakarta, is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and lies in one of the world's most densely populated areas.

The volcano has a summit elevation of nearly 10,000 feet [3,000 meters].

(CNN) -- Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore are seen as having the least corruption in the world, according to a just-published global survey.

Somalia is viewed as the most corrupt country.

The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) is published annually by Transparency International, a corruption monitoring organization based in Berlin, Germany.

"The surveys and assessments used to compile the index include questions relating to bribery of public officials, kickbacks in public procurement, embezzlement of public funds and questions that probe the strength and effectiveness of public sector anti-corruption efforts," said a release accompanying the 2010 CPI.

Countries with the highest scores on the index are viewed as having the least corruption; countries with the lowest scores, the most.
Video: Survey ranks world corruption

Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore each scored 9.3 out of a possible 10.

Rounding out the 10 highest scores: Finland and Sweden, 9.2; Canada, 8.9; Netherlands, 8.8; Australia and Switzerland, 8.7; and Norway, 8.6.

Japan was 17th on the list with a score of 7.8; the United Kingdom 20th (7.6); and the United States 22nd (7.1).

At the bottom of the 178 countries Somalia scored 1.1, just below Afghanistan and Myanmar (1.4) and Iraq (1.5).

Among emerging economic powerhouses, Brazil was 69th on the list with a score of 3.7; China 78th (3.5); and India 87th (3.3).

Overall, Transparency International says of the survey: "These results indicate a serious corruption problem.

"With governments committing huge sums to tackle the world's most pressing problems, from the instability of financial markets to climate change and poverty, corruption remains an obstacle to achieving much needed progress."

True Story -- Worth your while… Reading ! (for just 3 minutes)
At the prodding of my friends, I am writing this story. My name is Mildred Hondorf. I am a former elementary school music teacher from
Des Moines , Iowa .. I've always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons-something I've done for over 30 years. Over the years I found that children have many levels of musical ability. I've never had the pleasure of having a prodigy though I have taught some talented students.

However I've also had my share of what I call "musically challenged"pupils. One such student was Robby. Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single Mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students (especially boys!) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby.

But Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student. Well, Robby began with his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces
that I require all my students to learn.

Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and cringed and tried to encourage him. At the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say, "My mom's going to hear me play someday." But it seemed hopeless.He just did not have any inborn ability.
I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up.
  She always waved and smiled but never stopped in.

Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons.I thought about calling him but assumed because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else. I also was glad that he stopped coming. He was a bad advertisement for my teaching!

Several weeks later I mailed to the student's homes a flyer on the upcoming recital.. To my surprise Robby (who received a flyer)
asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was for current pupils and because he had dropped out he really did not
qualify. He said that his mother had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing
"Miss Hondorf I've just got to play!" he insisted.

I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the recital. Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be all right. The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives. I put Robby up last in the program before I was to come up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece.
I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program
and I could always salvage his poor performance through my "curtain closer."

Well, the recital went off without a hitch. The students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on stage. His clothes
were wrinkled and his hair looked like he'd run an eggbeater through it. "Why didn't he dress up like the other students?" I thought.
"Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?"

Robby pulled out the piano bench and he began. I was surprised when heannounced that he had chosen Mozart's Concerto #21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys, they even danced nimbly on the ivories. He went from pianissimo to fortissimo. From allegro to virtuoso. His suspended chords that Mozart demands were magnificent! Never had I heard Mozart played so well by people his age. After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause.Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. "I've never heard you play like that Robby!
How'd you do it? "Through the microphone Robby explained:

"Well Miss Hondorf Remember I told you my Mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning And well..,
      She was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I wanted to make it special."

There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening. As the people from Social Services led Robby from the stage to be placed into foster
care, noticed that even their eyes were red and puffy and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been
  for taking Robby as my pupil.

No, I've never had a prodigy but that night I became a prodigy. . ..Of Robby's.
He was the teacher and I was the pupil for it is he that taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself
and maybe even taking a chance in someone and you don't know why.

Robby was killed in the senseless bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah
Federal Building in Oklahoma City in April of 1995. And now, a footnote to the story.

Macavity  - The Mystery Cat
a poem by T S Eliot

Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw--
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!

Macavity, Macavity, there's no on like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air--
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly doomed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square--
But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's.
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair--
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Macavity's not there!

And when the Foreign Office finds a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scap of paper in the hall or on the stair--
But it's useless of investigate--Macavity's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:
"It must have been Macavity!"--but he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macacity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibit, or one or two to spare:
And whatever time the deed took place--MACAVITY WASN'T THERE!
And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

Poems and Poets / The Panther [English-Deutsch]
October 15, 2010, 05:21:27 AM

~Rainer Maria Rilke~

The Panther

His gaze, going past those bars, has got so misted
with tiredness, it can take in nothing more.
He feels as though a thousand bars existed,
and no more world beyond them than before.

Those supply powerful paddings, turning there
in tiniest of circles, well might be
the dance of forces round a center where
some mighty will stands paralyticly.

Just now and then the pupils' noiseless shutter
is lifted. - Then an image will indart,
down through the limbs' intensive stillness flutter,
and end its being in the heart.

   SONNET CXXX

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

William Shakespeare

Poems and Poets / I rose from marsh mud
October 15, 2010, 05:10:44 AM

I rose from marsh mud
algae, equisetum, willows,
sweet green, noisy
birds and frogs

to see her wed in the rich
rich silence of the church,
the little white slave-girl
in her diamond fronds.

In aisle and arch
the stain secret collects.
United for life to serve
silver. Possessed.

Poems and Poets / Amor Intellectualis
October 15, 2010, 05:08:42 AM
   Amor Intellectualis

Oft have we trod the vales of Castaly
And heard sweet notes of sylvan music blown
From antique reeds to common folk unknown:
And often launched our bark upon that sea
Which the nine Muses hold in empery,
And ploughed free furrows through the wave and foam,
Nor spread reluctant sail for more safe home
Till we had freighted well our argosy.

Of which despoilèd treasures these remain,
Sordello's passion, and the honied line
Of young Endymion, lordly Tamburlaine
Driving his pampered jades, and more than these,
The seven-fold vision of the Florentine,
And grave-browed Milton's solemn harmonies.

Anonymous Diary Blog / The Fish You’ll Remember
October 07, 2010, 05:20:10 AM

[Image Courtesy: aquariumowner.com]

I’m a fish, Ocean born.
Living way down ,
Far beneath where
Fish hooks float;
Too far-flung even for
Fish nets to reach.

From a world that knows
Not more than water,
I dream, someday I would
Stroll on land.
Deep in my heart I hold
This dear dream
That breathes on the sand
So far above.

Crazy they call my dream
Insane they call me,
For I’m a kind of fish that
Lives deep down;
Meant to see no light and
To walk no land.
“You can’t flood the land”
They mock… It’s true!

But I can shape my  gills
Into fine nostrils;
I can craft my little fins
Into four limbs;
I can mold my scales
Into velvety skin.

If I’m a fish “confined” to the Ocean
And Land is my biggest dream,
Oh! You’ll surely remember me as
A fish that walked on land!

You understand me, I know
From how I feel
When I’m next you.

Sorrows dwindle, and
Joys explode
When I talk to you.

Our bond is so strong
You can hear me, even
When I don’t say anything.

When I hug you,
I can feel your soul, just as
You always feel mine.

I rest on your roots,
Under the canopy of your foliage;
I feel revitalized.

In the only language you know
you talk to me -
In the language of love.

You consume my
Toxic fumes, and breathe
Fresh air into my soul.

You heal me when I’m sick,
Cleanse me when I’m soiled
And love me always.

Your warmth calms
My heart;
You give me hope.

In you, my dear tree, I see,
A friend, a family, and
Most times Myself..!  :-*

Talk of the Town / German Unity Day-Oct. 3rd
October 03, 2010, 12:37:37 AM
The Day of German Unity (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the national day of Germany,
celebrated on 3 October as a public holiday.
It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990.

An alternative choice would have been the day the Berlin Wall came downâ€"9 November 1989,
which coincided with the anniversary of the proclamation of the German Republic in 1918
and the defeat of Hitler's first coup in 1923.

However, 9 November was also the anniversary of the first large-scale Nazi-led pogroms against Jews in 1938 (Kristallnacht), so the day was considered inappropriate as a national holiday. Therefore, 3 October 1990, the day of formal reunification, was chosen instead.

Before reunification, in West Germany the "Day of German Unity" was 17 June,
remembering the failed Uprising of 1953 in East Germany against the Stalinist government.
The revolt was crushed with Soviet aid; the exact number of fatalities is unknown, but estimated at somewhere above 100.
In East Germany, the national holiday was 7 October, the "Day of the Republic" (Tag der Republik),
commemorating the founding of the German Democratic Republic in 1949.

Twisted excursions of the mind
Denote something of a different kind
A hidden self lost within
Free to roam
Unconscious of sin

How does one escape themselves
When deep within
Lies someone else
A stranger
Yet a part of you
Another being, which makes you two

Behind the dark
I hear your cries
Beyond it all
I hear your call
Torn between my frame of mind
I don’t know where to turn it all

What’s more than lonely
But an empty space
An unknown indifference
Creates a void
As distorted minds
Strive to find
Something of a different kind

Who am I
But not me
Am I you
Is there a we
Maybe to discover you
First I must discover me!

Love Talk / Girls Get Torpe Too
September 09, 2010, 02:57:47 AM
Last summer, I traded a part of my heart for a windsurfing lesson given by a guy na itatago natin sa pangalang Mr. HotStuff. This Mr. HotStuff is a windsurfing champion and nephew of one of my favorite professors na itatago naman natin sa pangalang Diyosa. Diyosa set us up, thinking we would hit off. It seemed serendipitous because an article on him and his windsurfing skills came out in Inquirer the day my article on summer flings was supposed to be published. ALAM NA. Jam and Jona, who were both students of the Diyosa, prepped me for it. Jam even helped me decide what to wear (Little Black Dress, beach-style). Jona was like, “OMG YOU CAN HAVE BEACH-LOVING, WINDSURFING, SHAKESPEARE-READING BABIES TOGETHER.”

After two dives with my family, I headed to Mr. HotStuff’s house where he would give me the lesson. Diyosa was there with her equally Diyos-of-a-husband and their two sonsâ€"the cutest, smartest boys I have ever met. When I met Mr. HotStuff, I was immediately smitten by his shy disposition and uh, six-pack abs. (I couldn’t help staring for mga 2 seconds. They were just so… Yummy.)

Unfortunately, I sucked at windsurfing. Whenever the sail would tilt to my direction, I’d panic, screech, and jump off the board. At one point, I freaked out, wrapped my arms around him and we both fell into the water. (It was an accident I swear it wasn’t a flirting tactic.) He tried to appease me when I couldn’t get the sail up by saying the winds were pretty strong. And they really were (defensive?!). By the end of the lesson, he asked me to sit at the edge of the board while he sailed. The pretty Philippine sunset served as our backdrop.

When we walked back to his house from the shore, Diyosa began the inquisition.
“So, what’s the grade of your student?”
“4.0,” he said.
“Ha? Anong klaseng grade ‘yon?! May removals?!”
“Dapat may take two,” he said with his oh-so-boyish smile.

I had to make sure my bikini bottom was still on.

After that, I didn’t hear from him. At all. No text. No “Mr. HotStuff has added you as a friend on Facebook.” And I started thinking, “OH MAN WAS I TOO TALKATIVE? IS IT BECAUSE HE THINKS I’M FAT? AM I THAT BAD OF A WINDSURFER? IS IT BECAUSE I ALMOST DROWNED HIM?”

To soothe my ego, my friends and I unanimously decided to put him in this imaginary box we have labeled s*** From the Past. All our exes and half-exes are here, along with memories of failed relationships and relationships that failed before they even began.

K, so let’s fast forward to three months later. My friend and I were planning to meet up before my yoga class. She knows the story and she knows him well, which is why itatago natin siya sa pangalang Cupid.
“By the way, Mr. HotStuff is here,” she texted.
“WHY??? s***! MUKHA AKONG TAE DAPAT PALA NAG COCKTAIL DRESS AKO HAHAHAHA!”
“Haha you’re so funny! Gaga! I’m here at Vanguard.”
“Where’s that?! Ah, I know na… I’ll follow my heart nalang ’til it leads me to… Mr. HotStuff. JOKE.”

When I finally found Cupid, we were talking talking talking talking then Mr. HotStuff walked up to us. The sight of his light brown eyes (I AM TALKING ABOUT A GUY’S EYES HERE WTF OKAY) made my heart seize. He was soo(count the Os) cute I almost threw up on him (Gold: DAPAT SINUKAHAN MO NGA!). I have imagined This Moment before and had the perfect conversation starter. You know, play it cool and be like, “So was I that bad of a student that I didn’t hear from you?” with a half laugh or something.
“Mr. HotStuff, si Anna, o,” said Cupid.
He smiled and said, “Hi.”
I smiled and said, “Hi.”

AND LOOKED AT THE PAVEMENT.

AND BEGAN PALPITATING.

AND STARTED SWEATING.

AND SAID NOTHING ELSE.   ???

ME. OF ALL PEOPLE.

When I told my kuya about this, his response was, “WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY SISTER?”

WHAT IS FLIRTATION FAIL. All my confidence and energy was zapped by his light brown eyes (AGAIN WITH THE EYES!!!!!).

“I should just put him in the box that says The One That Got Away. O kaya naman The One that let Me Get Away para may pride pa ako,” I told Dana after.
“Akala ko ba s*** From the Past?”
“Ay. O nga pala.”

The governor said the ambassadors were enthusiastic in forging sisterhood ties with the province of Cebu that may have common areas of interest with their own provinces.

The first batch of visitors was composed of Ambassadors Wadee Al-Batti of Iraq, Nawalage Bennet Cooray of Sri Lanka, Mohsin Razl of Pakistan
, Kristiarto S. Legowo of Indonesia, Perez Iturbe of Venezuela, Hos Serey Thonh of Cambodia and deputy head of mission Pham Hao of Vietnam. They were in Cebu recently to join a business forum organized by the City Gov-ernment of Mandaue for the celebration of its 41st Charter
Day.

Garcia said she told the foreign visitors that their coming to Cebu was an indication of tremendous vote of confidence in the peace and order situation of the province, its vibrant economy and its number of scenic spots.

The ambassadors for their part expressed appreciation on the hospitality of the Cebuanos and their ability to speak English with them.

Because of the warm welcome they received from Cebuanos, the ambassadors told the governor they are positive in promoting exchanges between their provinces and Cebu and are now seriously looking for sisterhood agreement.

Garcia said the Iraqi ambassador was very enthusiastic about the forging of ties and likewise informed the governor that Cebuanos are welcome to work in Iraq which is now at the threshold of construction boom as the war now begins to whine down. The foreign country is looking at rebuilding its structures, same with their educational system and agricultural system and technologies. The governor hopes for a possible economic activity between Cebu and a province of Iraq.

Al-Batti is hopeful that the travel ban to Iraq the Philippine government
imposed on Filipino workers would be lifted soon.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Angola, Flavio Fonseca, also paid a visit to the governor's office yesterday accompanied by Candice Gotianuy, the chancellor of the University of Cebu and the secretary of state of fisheries.

Garcia was glad to hear that there was an advance composition of sisterhood ties between Cebu and a province of Angola initiated by the secretary of state of fisheries.

The governor said the signing of agreement between UC and the Angolan government with regards to the teaching of Marine courses was not just plain academic ties but a multi-faceted establishment of ties between Cebu and Angola that includes official, political and business ties. (FREEMAN)

CEBU, Philippines â€" A member of the notorious "budol-budol" gang was arrested outside an uptown mall in the city last Monday after she was recognized by one of her victims.

Criselda Basit, 22, a sales clerk at the mall, said she is positive that it was the suspect, Susan Tampus, 48, of Cambaro, Mandaue City, who allegedly tricked her and took her mobile phone and P200 cash last May.

Basit, a resident of Lilo-an town, narrated that she went to Barangay Pagsabungan in Mandaue City on May 9 to buy something when Tampus, who introduced herself as "Virgie" and a resident of Daan Bantayan, suddenly approached her.

"Nangutana siya nako asa daw dapit didto maka-abang ug sakyanan kay naa daw siya i-karga na nukos. Ingon ko, dili man sad ko taga-diri gud, Miss…Nya naa dayo'y miduol na ba-baye miingon na ka-tultol daw siya ug asa maka-abang," Basit said.

Saying she was somewhat "hypnotized," Basit went with Tampus and the other woman who identified herself as "Karen." They reportedly boarded a jeepney and went to Barangay Basak where Karen said Virgie could rent a vehicle for her merchandize.

"Pag-abot sa Basak, ingon 'tong Karen na kuyugon daw niya si Virgie ngadto sa opisina pero di daw pwede magdala ug kwarta didto. Ingon si Virgie nga di na lang daw ko mukuyog nila 'nya since wala daw siya'y salig atong Karen, iya daw ibilin nako ang iya P10,000….Nya para makasalig daw siya nako, ako lang sa ingadto niya akong cellphone ug P200," Basit said.

The victim was convinced and handed over the money and phone worth P3000 to Tampus. Tampus, in turn, handed her over the "money" placed inside a plastic bag
, which was wrapped with a handkerchief.

"Then mibalik na'ko sa Pagsabungan, mingadto ko sa (RD) pawnshop. Ingon si Virgie nga adto lang daw ko maghuwat kay iya daw bana ang security guard didto. Pag-adto nako, ako gipangutana ang guard, iyang asawa kay tua ra man daw sa ila balay. Mao 'to gikulbaan na dayon ko'g taman hangtod sa minghilak na g'yud ko'g maayo," Basit said.

The victim said she discovered that the "money" she was holding were mere bundles of cut papers, which made her cry even more until she fainted.

At around 2:30 pm last Monday, she was sitting outside the mall before entering for duty when she noticed Tampus pass by her. With the mall's security guard, Basit went after her and asked her if she was the one who took her cellular phone to which the suspect denied.

Basit's suspicion arose when the woman ran away, but she was eventually accosted.

Tampus admitted the accusations and admitted further that she has been a member of the "budol-budol" gang for two years now.

She said her addiction to mahjong forced her to engage in the illegal activity, as she could not work reportedly because of a cyst on her left breast.

Another victim, Lanie Dumanjug, 27, of Barangay Lahug, also pointed to Tampus as the one who allegedly victimized her last May 14 when she was heading towards a mall.

She said Tampus and Karen divested her of mobile phone worth P20,000 and P500 cash using the same modus operandi.

A charge for estafa is now being prepared against the suspect. (FREEMAN)

CEBU, Philippines â€" Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz will not apologize for what has been tagged as a slur against the Cebuanos when she was interviewed on national television.

Diaz, who won the Miss Universe title in 1969, believes that she was misunderstood when she said in an interview citing an example that "a Cebuana can hardly speak English and Tagalog" and contestants from the Philippines
should use interpreters in international beauty pageants.

Cebuanos felt Diaz was belittling their English-speaking abilities and demanded an apology.

The Vice Mayor's League of the Philippines (VMLP)-Cebu Chapter has issued a statement declaring the former beauty queen as persona non-grata for making unsavory remarks while Cebu City North District Rep. Rachel Margueritte "Cutie" del Mar, in a privilege speech at the House of Representatives last night, asked Diaz to issue a public apology.

"I'm not going to apologize. I already explained it," Diaz said in an interview with The Freeman.

Diaz clarified that her remarks should not be taken as an insult to Cebuanos.

She said she was even shocked when she heard that some got angry over what she had allegedly said in that TV interview.

"I'm not stupid to say that. My boyfriend is a Cebuano. All my people here at home are Cebuanos, five of them," Diaz said.

Diaz said her statement was taken out of context.

"If you're Cebuano, say it in Bisaya. If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. If you're Cebuano who can speak good English, say it in English. I did not single out the Cebuanos. It's so unfair that they will jump into a conclusion," she added.

Mario Dumaual, a senior entertainment reporter of ABS-CBN, said that what Diaz meant in the interview was that beauty contestants should speak in their dialect.

"Ang nasa youtube ay pinutol. Wala naman talagang derogatory remarks ang kanyang sinabi," Dumaual said.

At the House of Representatives, Del Mar said, "It is with much regret that I report that Diaz - former Miss Philippines - who had once brought glory to this proud nation - has awakened a sleeping giant: Cebuanos strong aversion to anti-Cebuano insulting remarks. I call on Diaz to issue a sincere public apology to the Cebuano people."

Del Mar, a neophyte lawmaker, said that Cebu is in fact a preferred location for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies because of the language skills of the people here.

"Cebu also has the most number of operating special economic zones and IT centers outside the National Capital Region. Tourism, one of the country's major industries, has grown partly because of the Cebuanos' ability to communicate intelligently with foreign tourists," del Mar said.

VMLP-Cebu Chapter president Arlene Zambo of Toledo
City said the group came up with an official declaration of Diaz as persona non-grata in the Cebu Province for making those unsavory remarks.

Zambo said the resolution was approved en mass motion by league's members and that they will also take it up in the various city and municipal councils that they belong to.

The Mandaue City Council, the Lapu-Lapu City Council, Talisay City Council and Cebu City Council are also set to file separate resolutions demanding for a public apology from Diaz.

"I am disappointed personally and ang iyang pag-look down naay discrimination. She did not even say sorry during her interview, it even comes out nga nagtaray gihapon siya," Zambo said.

The Toledo City vice mayor said that the former beauty queen will not be welcomed in Cebu. The VLMP also appealed to the Cebuanos to boycott products that she endorse and not watch her shows.

In a separate interview, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said that every Filipina deserves respect from her fellow Filipinas and what Diaz said was a heartless and a mindless statement.

"She is unrepentant and that adds insult to injury. Unrepentant whether quoted out of context or purely uttered without thinking," Garcia said, adding that Diaz should respect the Cebuanas whether she is a Bicolana, Ilongga or Manileña. - with Ria Mae Y. Booc/NLQ (FREEMAN)

~The "major²" issue scattered like a rat population giving us "Filipinos" a negative controversial impact,but God is JUST. Here's the contrary effect and i hope thru this we would be able to open our eyes that if we once fall there's always a place to stand up again in such so many ways. Take into consideration, Miss Phils.California 2010 "major²" inspiration was Miss Venus Raj..!
Butangi..! (never underestimate the Filipinos)  ;D ,oh ja - travel, excell,deal with all angles of life (asa ka manangkong ana?)~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
23 year old Manila born, Frances Pascua was crowned today in San Diego,Ca as the “Miss Philippines California 2010″ . Frances is Filipina and German descent and hails from Pasay City,Philippines. She moved to the United States when she was 5 years old.Frances earned her bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies at San Diego State University and is currently a student at Alliant University pursuing her MBA in Business Administration.Praise this young woman, she is not only strikingly beautiful but is very intelligent as well.She won over the judges when asked;
Q w/Judge: Literacy is very important to our youth today, with the invent of text messaging, instant messaging, and twitter today’s children’s are growing up to the tendancy of skim material and responding to a few words or characters, what book are you currently reading or have read in the past would you reccomend to today’s youth to encourage them?
A: I think the book that has really changed my life is “The Biology of Belief”. “The Biology of Belief” is looking within ourselves and finding our own inspiration to move forward and reach our accomplishments.Unfortunately, with the times of today with the media and the internet- the growing growth of the internet;many of our youth are turning to twitter,facebook, and all of those websites which is great for technology but we have to take into consideration what kind of impact that’s giving to our children. If their span is only 140 characters; which is a twitter update, what are we teaching our children? We should encourage them to read books with value that has sentiment, that has philosphy like “The Biology of Belief”which has really shaped me and inspired me to become the person I have become today. Thank you.
Frances’s platform is to give back to her country. Gawad Kalinga Community Service is the grassroots movement whose mission is to build communities to end poverty in the Philippines.Frances does plan on visiting her homeland this fall to visit her family and help the community as well. She is excited to take on her new role as “Miss Philippines California 2010″ to serve and attend community events and to empower young children- making a difference.
I asked her how she prepared for this pageant and she said Miss Philippines Universe â€" Venus Raj was her inspiration. This beauty on her spare time loves to live an active lifestyle- running and tennis everyday- thats her beauty secret. By the way, Frances can fluently speak Tagalog and her favorite filipino dish when I asked her ” I have so many”( giggles) Ok, Frances choose one, ” Apritada!” Ok, I owe you lunch!
Congratulations Frances, we are so proud of you! Maybe one day she’ll become our Miss Universe?!
Until next time! Iyo Tunay<3
DUHA ang nangamatay ug unom pa ang nagpabilin sa tambalanan, usa niini mabdos nga naa sa kritikal nga kahimtang human nangahilo ang ilang pamilya nga nangaon sa ilang gilutong butete niadtong Domingo sa gabii sa Brgy. Cabutongan, lungsod sa Santander, Sugbo.
Si Rolando Tano, 48, biyudo,mangisida, nagpuyo sa nahisgutang barangay, namatay diha-diha gilayon human makakaon sa butete samtang dead on arrival sa Oslob District Hospital si Alejandro Cuerpo, 51, minyo, brgy. Tanod.
Ang anak ni Tano nga Airene, 19, mabdos, naa sa kritikal nga kahimtang.
Naa sab sa ospital ang iyang manghod nga si Loie Jay Tano, 13. Ang anak ni Cuerpo nga si Algie, 28, minyo, naospital sab kay nahilo.
Laing nangahilo mao ang ilang mga paryente nga sila si Salvador Base, 48; Baldomiro Base, 69; ug si Reymond Base, 16.
Si PO1 Roel Gerodias, desk officer sa Santander Police Station nga nahinabi sa Sun.Star Superbalita, nagkanayon nga alas 6:00 sa gabii niadtong Dominggo nangaon ang mga biktima og dakong butete nga motimbang sa lima ka kilo.
Matod pa ni Gerodias nga ang butete nakuha ni Tano ug gilimpyuhan niini didto pa sa dagat sa wa pa niya dad-a sa ilang balay ug giluto uban sa pamilya ug mga paryente.
Apan pagka-alas 10: sa gabii sa samang adlaw nakabatig sakit sa ilang tiyan, paglipong-lipong ang mga biktima.
Si Rolando maoy namatay diha-diha, samtang si Cuerpo gidali sa pagdala sa tambalanan uban sa laing unom ka mga biktima apan gideklatrar sa mga doctor nga DOA.
Si Gerodias niingon nga si Airene, kinsa buntis, gi-oxygen pa sa Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) gumikan kay naggrabihan sa hilo sa isda.
Nagpabilin usab sa maong tambalanan ang iyang lima pa ka mga kauban.
Gipadayag niini nga sa wa pa mangaon sila si Rolando, giingong nag-inom pa sila ug nangagda sa ilang ubang mga higala nga mangaon og butete nga nindot kaayong sumsuman.
Sumala pa ni PO1 Gerodias nga basi mga nakasaksi sa wa pa mamatay ang biktima,giapil sa pagluto ni Rolando ang bihod sa butete ingon man tambok niini hinungdan nga nagtuo sila nga dunay naapil nga hilo sa isda.
Wa hinuon nila isakway ang posiblidad nga dunay mga parte sa lawas sa butete nga nataligam-an sa pagkuha ni Rolando hinungdan nga kumpiyansa kaayo.
Giingong kabisado na kaayo ni Rolando ang pagpanguhag butete ingon man pagluto niini.
Ang isda nakuha sa usa ka “bobo” nga klase sa panagat apan seguro gidali-dali niini sa paglimpiyo ug posibling dunay nahabiling hilo sa isda.
Dugang niya nga kusog gyud mangaon og butete ang mga tawo sa lugar ug mao niy usa ka kinaham nilang matang sa isda nga kan-unon.
Inspiration & Hope / God Is Always Near
  ~GOD IS ALWAYS NEAR~
One thing can always cheer me
  When I'm feeling sad and low
    When I'm tired of daily trials
       That I have to undergo,
  When those who should
    Seem closest, seem like
      People I don't know,
One thing can always cheer me
    I know that God is near me.
One thing can always cheer me
  When I do not understand
     How pain and sadness
         In our lives,can get so out of hand,
When the best of human efforts,
    Doesn't meet the days demands,
One thing can always cheer me
    I know that God is always near me.
One thing can always cheer me
   More than anything I've known
     And show me I will never have to struggle on my own,
For no matter what might happen
  I will never be alone
    The thing that will always cheer me
           Is just knowing God is near me.
Our lives are in God's loving hands, in everything we do
  He is with us constantly,
      He always sees us through.
         And if our faith is strong enough
We'll never walk alone,
    For with His great and perfect LoVe
         He takes care of His own.  :-*
PEPPERMINT
Peppermint is sometimes regarded as 'the world's oldest medicine', with archaeological evidence placing its use at least as far back as ten thousand years ago.
In the year 2004 it was elected as the Medical Plant of the Year.
Peppermint, like many spices and herbs, is believed to have medicinal properties when consumed.
It is said that it helps against upset stomachs, inhibits the growth of certain bacteria,
and can help soothe and relax muscles when inhaled or applied to the skin.
Inhaling the vapor from peppermint oil or peppermint tea is said to reduce congestion.
Other health benefits are attributed to the high manganese, vitamin C and vitamin A content;
as well as trace amounts of various other nutrients such as fibre, iron,
calcium, folate, potassium, tryptophan, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, riboflavin, and copper.
Peppermint tea is a drink that is either a mixture of tea and peppermint (Mentha piperita) or a tisane (infusion) of peppermint alone.
This drink is said to have health benefits.
Tea made solely from peppermint leaves is naturally caffeine-free.
Our Peppermint grows on the property and is picked by hand,
gently dehydrated and packed in 20g envelopes.
 *How to make Melt-In-Your-Mouth Supersoft Ensaymada*
Ensaymada is a Filipino sweet roll topped with creamed butter and sugar,
with optional grated cheddar cheese.
This recipe makes use of ingredients easily available in the American household pantry
  or grocery stores, and has been tried and tested by many friends,
who rave that this is even better than Goldilocks or Red Ribbon ensaymada.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ingredients:
5 cups bread flour (separate 1 + 1 + 3) />
1/2 cup sugar
2 envelopes Fleischmann’s RapidRise Yeast (1 envelope is 0.25 oz = 2-1/4 tsp)
1 tablespoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
2/3 cup shortening (also known as lard, PURICO in Philippines, STRUTTO in Italy)
1 cup finely mashed potato
2 whole eggs
3 egg yolks
2-oz crumbled feta cheese

softened butter (approximately 1 stick to 1-1/2)(for rolled method)

for topping:

melted butter (approximately 1 stick)
a block of monterey jack/cheddar cheese, finely grated (as much as desired; this is optional)

Directions
Combine 1 cup flour, sugar, undissolved yeast and salt. Heat milk, water and shortening until very warm (120º to130ºF). Gradually add to dry ingredients. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in mashed potato, whole eggs and 1 cup flour; beat 2 minutes at high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Meanwhile, add the crumbled feta cheese to 1 cup flour and process in a food processor to mix very well, then combine with the rest of the flour.  Stir this flour mixture to make a stiff batter. Detach dough hook and cover dough plus hook loosely with plastic wrap; refrigerate 2 hours. Remove from fridge and add the 3 egg yolks, stir setting on the mixer. Remove hook from the dough this time and cover loosely again with plastic then refrigerate for 1 or up to 22 hours.

When ready to bake, sprinkle your work surface generously with flour. Grease your hands and place the dough on the work surface.  Sprinkle the dough generously with flour anywhere it is sticky, and divide using dough cutter into three portions.  Degas by pressing with your palms or rolling pin and shape into a rectangle about 8 inches by 10 inches.

Shaping them can be done two ways: coiling or rolling.

(1) Coiling method: Using dough cutter, cut portions into ropes about 1 foot long and make flat coils, tucking the ends under.  Place on greased baking sheets (non-insulated aluminum preferred) 1 inch apart.

(2) Rolling method: Apply softened butter on the rectangular dough except 1/2 inch from edges. Roll from the long side to form a log. Using dough cutter, swiftly cut at intervals of 1-1/2 inches. Place on greased baking sheet cut side up, 1 inch apart. Alternatively, you may use brioche molds (5-inch diameter) sprayed with butter flavored oil. (This whole recipe will yield 3 logs, 8-9 rolls each.  A log can be frozen by wrapping tightly in cling wrap. When ready to use, thaw in room temperature for 15 minutes before slicing, then let rise for about 2 hrs to 3 hrs or until doubled).

Brush with melted butter, and cover with greased plastic to rise for 30 minutes to one hour (depends on how warm your environment is) until doubled in size.

Bake at 350ºF for 12-15 minutes or until done and golden light brown. Remove from pans; cool on wire rack for about 30 minutes or until completely cool if not consuming immediately, and store in ziploc bag.

To enjoy ensaymada the traditional Filipino way:
Brush softened butter to warm ensaymadas (not too hot that it melts the butter), dunk in a bowl of sugar (or sprinkle the sugar on top), and top with finely grated cheese (the finer grater gives you soft looking curls of the cheese like in the photo above). Note: Toppings are best added immediately prior to consumption.

This image, acquired on 15 April 2010 by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS),
shows the vast cloud of volcanic ash sweeping across the UK from the eruption in Iceland, more than 1000 km away.

The ash, which can be seen as the large grey streak in the image, is drifting from west to east at a height of about 11 km above the surface Earth.

This Envisat radar image captures volcanoes dotted across the landscape in Tanzania, including the distinctive Ol Doinyo Lengai (at lower left), in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. The Gelai Volcano (2942 m) is visible at the top, and the Kitumbeine Volcano (1770 m) is southeast of Gelai.

Radar images represent surface backscatter rather than reflected light, so there is no colour in a standard radar image. This image was created by combining three Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar acquisitions (3 February 2010, 30 December 2009 and 25 November 2009) of the same area. The colours result from changes in the surface between acquisitions.

Inspiration & Hope / What then shall I do this Lent?
April 01, 2010, 11:46:41 PM
What shall I do this Lent
Shall I go for dainty foods?
Or will it be the television set?
No, says the Lord,
Neither of these is enough.

What then shall I do this Lent?
Shall I attend an extra Mass?
Or may be a bible study class?
No, says the Lord,
These too are not enough.

Oh, Lord, what shall I do this Lent?
Shall I endeavour to pray more?
Or visit the sick or poor?
No, says the Lord,
These are still not enough.

Lord, I  surrender..!  :'(
Ah, child that is the word
I have been waiting to hear,
Longing to hear
From your heart.

Love Talk / LoVe is Just Like Waiting for a Bus
March 31, 2010, 10:21:38 PM
You know, love is just like waiting for a bus. When the bus comes,
  you look at it and you tell yourself "Geee...so full....can't sit down.
    I'll wait for the next one". So you let the bus go and waited for the second bus.
    Then the second bus came,
       you looked at it and say, "Yuck...this bus is so old...so shabby!"
          So you let the bus go and again, decided to wait for the next bus.

After a while another bus came, it's not crowded, not old but you said, "g***... not air-conditioned,
  better wait for the next one".  So, again you let the bus go and decided to wait for the next bus.
     Then suddenly the sky got dark as it was going to pour hard.
        You panicked and jumped immediately on to the next bus.
It was not until much later that you found out that you had boarded the wrong bus!

So you wasted your time and money waiting for the bus that you wanted!
   But even if an air-conditioned bus came,
     there was no way you could be certain that the air-conditioned bus
      won't break down or whether the air conditioner suited you well. So people,
          wanting to get on the bus that you want is not wrong per se.
But it definitely wouldn't hurt if we sometimes try boarding a bus that passes us by chance, right?
   If you find that the "bus" doesn't suit you just press the red button and get off the bus! (as simple as that!) Fair enough?
     You don't think so?.... But hey, who said life is fair?
The best thing to do is open your eyes wide while you probe the bus.
  i said it before and I'll say it again, "If it doesn't suit you, get off".

But you must always have an extra something, which you could use for the next bus that comes,
But wait... I'm sure you had this experience before...
   You saw a bus coming (the bus that you want, of course)
    flagged it but the driver acted as if he did not see you and zoomed past you!
It just wasn't meant for you! The bottom line is,
  being loved is like waiting for a bus you want.
    But getting on the bus that just comes along
      and appreciating it by giving it a chance depends totally on you.
If you haven't made any choice, WALK! Walking is like being out of love.
The good side of it is you can still choose any bus you want...
    Well, the rest who couldn't afford another ride
would just have to be content with the bus they rode on, ugly or not.

So in choosing your bus, it's better to choose a bus you are already familiar with
   rather than gamble with a bus that is unfamiliar to you.
     But, then again, life wouldn't be complete without the risks involved. ^♥^

One more thing… there’s one bus that I forgot to tell you about
-THE BUS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR...
   IT WILL JUST STOP ON ITS OWN AND WILL ASK YOU TO COME INSIDE
      AND TAKE YOU FOR A FREE RIDE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE ^â—‹^  ;D

Bible Study / Reflection

 d' First Word of the 7 last words of JESUS on the cross @ Calvary,

"Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34)

Questions:

Do u really believe God has forgiven ur sins?
Do u take time on a regular basis to confess ur sins so that
    u might enjoy the freedom of forgiveness?

~Reflection~

It makes sense that the first word of Jesus from the cross is a word of 4giveness.
That's the point of the cross, after all. Jesus is dying so that we might be forgiven for our sins,
          so that we might be reconciled to God for eternity.

But the 4giveness of God through Christ doesn't come only
  to those who don't know what they are doing when they sin.
In the mercy of God, we receive his forgiveness even when we do what we know to be wrong.
God chooses to wipe away our sins, not because we have some convenient excuse,
   and not because we have tried hard to make up for them,

but because he is a God of amazing grace, with mercies that are new every morning.

goody morny folks manghimuta una ko  ;D whops padayon zha ko -yango²

As we read the words, "Father, forgive them,"
   may we understand that we too are forgiven through Christ.

As John writes in his first letter,
"But if we confess our sins to him,
  he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness"
(1 John 1:9).

Because Christ died on the cross for us, we are cleansed from all wickedness, from every last sin.
We are united with God the Father as his beloved children.
   We are free to approach his throne of grace with our needs and concerns.

God "has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west" (Ps 103:13).
    from Amihan to Habagat 8)

   What great news! ja³

Happy Easter to all of "US" ♥♥♥  have a nice celebration ..^♥^

Bible Study / No Time @ All
March 17, 2010, 07:35:52 PM
I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees..
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer.
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They'd laugh at me I'd fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry.
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord, I came,

I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God held a book,
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
'Your name I cannot find.
I once was going to write it down,
But never found the time'.

Bisaya Cebuano Language / Ang Kamatayon ni Leon Kilat
February 23, 2010, 07:43:27 AM

Ug unsa man diay ta karong adlawa?” Matod ni Beatriz, “Huwebes
Santo, Abril 7, 1898.

A Qantas jet with nearly 200 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at Sydney’s international airport after its landing gear failed to retract after take-off.

An airline statement today said the Airbus 330 jet bound for Shanghai was forced to circle over Sydney for more than two hours and burn off fuel before safely making an emergency landing.

--------------------------------

In 2008 Australia’s aviation safety agency ordered Qantas to improve its maintenance system following a review prompted by a series of safety problems, including an oxygen tank explosion on a Boeing 747-400 that ripped a hole in the jet’s fuselage, forcing it to make an emergency landing in the Philippines. No one was injured.

IE Market Research Corporation: The Philippines will have 99.2 million mobile subscribers in 2014 with market share of PLDT rising to 58.6%, according to new market research report by IEMR

Vancouver,, Feb 18, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- IE Market Research Corp. (IEMR), the Canadian-based provider of market intelligence services, announced today the release of its 1Q.2010 Philippines Mobile Operator Forecast, 2009 - 2014.

"An increasing number of mobile subscribers in the Philippines are using prepaid SIM cards, and we forecast that the number of total mobile subscriber accounts in the country will increase from 72.8 million in 2009 to 99.2 million in 2014," said Nizar Assanie, Vice President (Research) at IEMR. "The largest mobile operator in the country will continue to be PLDT. We expect that its subscriber base will increase from 40 million in 2009 to 58.1 million in 2014. We also estimate that Globe Telecom will have 27.8 million subscribers and Digitel will have 13.2 million subscribers by the end of 2014." "Our model is predicting that PLDT's subscriber market share will increase from 55% in 2009 to 58.6% in 2014. Also, we expect that Digitel's share of total subscribers will rise from 10% in 2009 to 13.4% in 2014. On the other hand, we forecast that Globe Telecom's share will decline to approximately 28% in 2014," said Mr. Assanie.

IEMR's Philippines Mobile Operator Forecast covers up to 50 financial and operational metrics on each of the following wireless operators in the Philippines - The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), Globe Telecom, Inc. and Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. (Digitel). Notable highlights of the 1Q10 Philippines Mobile Operator Forecast include: * We think that ARPU levels in the Philippines will continue to fall in the Philippines, partly because more people own multiple subscriber accounts. Our model forecasts that PLDT's monthly ARPU will fall from about PHP 200 in 2009 to PHP 180 in 2014. Also, we expect that Globe Telecom's monthly ARPU will fall from approximately PHP 180 to PHP 165 over the forecast period, 2009 - 2014.

* Profitability, measured by EBITDA margins, is very high in the Philippines's wireless market compared to many other wireless markets around the world. We forecast that EBITDA margins at PLDT and Globe Telecom will be approximately 61.3% and 58.5% respectively in 2014.

IEMR's Global Mobile Operator Forecast covers 50 operational metrics of 200+ mobile operators in 50 countries, making up 80% of the world's population. Forecasts are based on our proprietary, country-specific forecasting models. These models deploy multiple regression analysis and cross-impact matrices that estimate relationships between subscriber data, technology use and deployment data, overall economic and demographic changes expected in a particular country; and relate these to company operational and financial metrics.

Last Week I threw out worrying, it was getting old and in the way.
  It kept me from being me; I couldn't do things God's way.

I threw out a book on MY PAST
(Didn't have time to read it anyway).

Replaced it with NEW GOALS, started reading it today.

I threw out hate and bad memories,
(Remember how I treasured them so)?

Got me a NEW PHILOSOPHY too, threw out the one from long ago.

Brought in some new books too, called I CAN, I WILL, and I MUST.

Threw out I might, I think and I ought.
   WOW, you should've seen the dust.

I ran across an OLD FRIEND, I hadn't talked to in a while.

His name is GOD , and I really like His style.

He helped me to do some cleaning and added some things Himself.

Like PRAYER, HOPE, FAITH and LOVE,
  Yes... I placed them right on the shelf.

I picked up this special thing and placed it at the front door.

I FOUND IT- it's called PEACE.. Nothing gets me down anymore.

Yes, I've got my house looking nice.
   Looks good around the place.
For things like Worry and Trouble there just isn't any space

It's good to do a little house cleaning,
  Get rid of the things on the shelf.

It sure makes things brighter; maybe you should TRY IT YOURSELF.
   BE BLESSED AND BE A BLESSING TO SOMEONE ELSE..!

May the Lord open the windows of heaven
  and pour you out a blessing that
     You will not have room enough to receive it all.

May the Lord bless you exceedingly , abundantly
     above all you could ever Hope for. -Kâ,¬â,¬p tHâ,¬ FAITH ♥

MANILA, Philippines -- A monument to the late President Corazon Aquino will be unveiled in Manila on Monday, her 77th birth anniversary.

It is the first memorial shrine honoring the well-loved Aquino, or simply Cory to the Filipino people, according to its sculptor Eduardo Castrillo.

Castrillo made the country’s first statue of Aquino’s martyred husband, Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in Concepcion, Tarlac, as well as another Ninoy statue in the People Power monument on Edsa.

The newly unveiled 15-foot bronze statue of Aquino stands beside a statue of Ninoy (not by Castrillo) on Roxas Boulevard and Padre Burgos Drive across the historic Manila Hotel.

It shows the country’s first woman president flashing the “Laban!” (Fight!) sign with her right hand and holding the 1987 Philippine Constitution with the other.

In front of the two monuments is a sign that reads, “Ninoy-Cory Aquino, Salamat po.”

BERLIN-- The German rock band The Scorpions is breaking up after more than 40 years together courting controversy and selling more than 100 million recordings, its founder said in an interview published Sunday.

Rudolf Schenker told the weekly Bild am Sonntag that the group, best known for its power ballad "Wind of Change" which became closely associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago, was ready to call it a day.

"Yes, we're quitting," the 61-year-old guitarist said. "We are working on our last album right now and are getting ready for the final tour."

The final release, "Sting In The Tail", on March 19 will be followed by a two- or three-year world tour, said singer Klaus Meine, also 61.

"We're not getting any younger," he said. "We'd rather go out with a killer album and follow our hearts."

Schenker and drummer Wolfgang Dziony started the band in 1965, and Meine joined four years later.

In 1976, the band ran into trouble when it released the album "Virgin Killer" featuring a picture of a naked prepubescent girl on its cover.

The photograph was replaced after a storm of controversy in countries such as the United States and Britain.

"The Scorpions" scored their first top-10 hit in 1984 with "Still Loving You" and made the charts with anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane", "No One Like You" and "Send Me an Angel".

Over the years, they replaced four bassists, six drummers and two guitarists.

"Wind of Change" came out in 1990, a few months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and became 1991's biggest-selling single worldwide. It led to an invitation that year to play for Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the Kremlin.

"We totally lived our dream," Meine told Bild am Sonntag. "We achieved everything you can achieve with a rock band."

VIENNAâ€"Austria nationalized Hypo Alpe Adria, a unit of German public-sector bank BayernLB, on Monday, bank and government officials said.

BayernLB said that Austria is taking its 67.08 percent stake in Hypo Alpe Adria for the symbolic price of euro1 ($1.46).

It added that it was maintaining its existing liquidity lines to the bank and waiving a total of euro825 million in receivables due from Hypo Alpe Adria.

Bavarian Finance Minister Georg Fahrenschoen, who heads BayernLB's administrative board, said the deal was needed to "stabilize a bank of systemic importance to Austria and southeastern Europe." He said the German bank was writing euro2.3 billion off its books as part of the deal.

At a news conference in Vienna, Michael Kemmer, the head of BayernLB, called his bank's decision to give up its interest in Hypo Alpe Adria, "a painful step."

Beyond the euro825 million coming from the Bavarian bank's decision to give up its claims, Austrian Finance Minister Joseph Proell said Carinthia province, which was also part owner, was providing euro200 million and up to euro450 million would be offered from federal Austrian funds.

Carinthia and the third part-owner, Austrian insurer Grazer Wechselseitige, also gave up their holdings to the Austrian government for a symbolic euro1.

BayernLB bought its Hypo Alpe Adria stake in 2007 for some euro1.6 billion.

Hypo Alpe Adria has some 7,000 employees and is active in central and eastern Europe. It has suffered from hefty writedowns recently.

As the summer ended, the Macedonian lustration commission finally opened its doors for politicians who rushed in to submit their statements swearing they had not collaborated with the communist secret services. The commission, the chief instrument created to implement the law on lustration, has to verify these statements against the old secret police files.

A year and half after the Macedonian lustration law was passed, and 18 years since the beginning of transition, lustration has finally commenced.

Time is still needed to see the actual effect on Macedonian society. Some experts argued that a loud bang is out of the question; perhaps even a hushed whimper would be too much to expect.
Some believe that after all these years the powerful politicians have found ways to get their names out of the dusty files.

Twenty years after the end of communism, lustration is still an issue, and it has not even effectively commenced.
Perhaps countries in the Balkans should really rethink if they want to "forgive and forget."
In 2000, Adam Michnik advocated the abandoning of lustration in Poland and said that states cannot move forward without having reconciled with the past, and that the challenge is how to achieve this and maintain balance between justice and stability. In 2007, Serbian President Boris Tadic said it was too late for lustration in Serbia. He probably (and rightfully) feared it would further antagonize the already polarized country.

Government agrees not to arrest outlaws for abduction or past charges:

Philippine troops escort freed hostages on a military vehicle shortly after their release in Prosperidad town, Agusan del Sur, southern Philippines, on Sunday.

updated 8:59 a.m. ET Dec. 13, 2009

PROSPERIDAD, Philippines - Gunmen freed Sunday the 47 hostages they were holding at a jungle hideout in the southern Philippines after government negotiators agreed not to arrest the outlaws for the abductions or past murder charges, officials said.

The remote jungle encampment had been surrounded by troops and snipers. Vice Governor Santiago Cane of Agusan del Sur province said the hostages left aboard two army trucks. The gunmen â€" former government-armed militiamen â€" then surrendered their assault rifles, grenades and ammunition.

"Declaring officially that all hostages are free. Yes, at last," Cane told reporters in a cellphone message.

Photos Unlimited / Why (most) women like to shop
December 14, 2009, 12:53:10 AM
Women get back to their foraging roots by sorting through store racks
  â€" as if scanning plants for signs of ripeness, researchers suggest.

Our ancestors didn't shop for holiday gifts,
  but the way we buy may owe credit to thousands of years of evolution.

In a new study, researchers propose that our mall
  -visiting behaviors harken back to the days when men hunted and women foraged.

Modern men, for example, generally want to get into a store and get right back out
  â€" just like their hunting forefathers wanted to find and bring meat home as quickly as possible.
    On the other hand, women get back to their foraging roots by sorting through racks of sweaters on sale
      â€" as if scanning plants for signs of ripeness.

Inspiration & Hope / Life's Real Treasures
December 13, 2009, 08:58:58 PM
Peace â€" a lofty goal you set
You speak of this, and yet
Most do not enough, to make it come
For all the parts they form one sum
All must work as one
If true peace is to be won.

Stop the crying and the weeping
Wake up! You’ve all been sleeping
Look upon your neighbor as yourself
Cherish not great power and great wealth
But treasure rather the riches so fine
That come from all that is divine

And what are these treasures? You do ask
To put them to use … that’s your task
Peace and love, to serve and be kind
These are the things to keep in mind

Having compassion when others are sick
Healing the feeble, those not quite so quick
Lending a hand when others are ill
Helping each other their duties to fill

These are the riches that bring you wealth
They bring you all closer in sickness and health
These gifts given freely a man will set free
And give him a life as rich as can be
Fear nothing at all when these lessons you know
With love at your side there’s nowhere you can’t go

Inspiration & Hope / The Only Weapon We Need
December 13, 2009, 07:45:16 PM

Today we pray anew.

Oh God, help the world to see
That peace and harmony
Are gifts given
Eyes blinded cannot see
Your majesty.

Awaken those who lie without sight
Filled with might
That cometh not from thee.
For thine is true and mighty love
That comes from above
Showers down like raindrops
To the ground.
There under foot we look
Where we do tread
And make our bed
Never knowing you are there
Everywhere.

Oh, Lord, how great and mighty is your sword
A blade of glory
It’s a story
Of truth.
No knights in armor come to fight
For what is right
But ride a wave of tolerance
Forgiveness,
Strength
To what length
Will they go
To show
That love’s the only weapon we do need
These our words must all men heed
If peace will come to these shores.
Fight no more
Love one another
Sister and brother
Cherish the treasure
Love without measure abounds
If only man would look
Forsake the mighty sword
Turn toward the Lord
Search no more
Settle the score
Stop the war and hatred.
Life is sacred.
This we pray each day.
Amen.

Every year more than 400 million people celebrate Xmas around the world, that makes Xmas one of the world’s biggest religious and commercial festivities. In approximately year 300 A.D., the birthday of Jesus was determined to be on December 25, the day that has been celebrated from then till this very day. The celebration on the 25th of December starts with Christmas Eve, the evening of December 24.

The religious festival is originally a blend of pagan customs. The Romans held a festival on December 25 called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, i.e. "the birthday of the unconquered sun.". Pagan Scandinavia celebrated a winter festival called Yule, held in late December to early January. However, it is uncertain exactly why December 25 became associated with the birth of Jesus since the Old Testament doesn’t mention a specific date of the event.

Lord God, no one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.
In your kindness, watch over the victims of war, those separated from their loved ones,

         Grant this through Christ our Lord. amen
