Shadow (psychology)

In Jungian psychology, the shadow or "shadow aspect" is a part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. It is one of the three most recognizable archetypes, the others being the anima and animus and the persona. "Everyone carries a shadow,
" Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is."

1- It may be (in part) one's link to more primitive animal instincts,

2- which are superseded during early childhood by the conscious mind.

According to Jung, the shadow, in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to projection:
turning a personal  inferiority into a perceived moral deficiency in someone else.
Jung writes that if  these projections are unrecognized "The projection-making factor
                           (the Shadow archetype)
then has a free hand and can realize its object>if it has one--
or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power."

3- These projections insulate and cripple individuals by forming an ever thicker fog of illusion
between the ego   and the real world.

        From one perspective, 'the shadow...is roughly equivalent to the whole of the Freudian unconscious';

4- and Jung himself considered that 'the result of the Freudian method of elucidation is a minute elaboration
of man's shadow-side unexampled in any previous age.

Health and Food / AV-Fistula
May 26, 2011, 06:15:08 AM

An arteriovenous fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway between an artery and a vein. It may be congenital, surgically created for hemodialysis treatments, or acquired due to pathologic process, such as trauma or erosion of an arterial aneurysm.

Patients with end stage renal failure are treated with hemodialysis. In dialysis, blood is withdrawn from an artery or vein, purified, and returned to a vein. The volume of blood is too great for veins to handle, so a vein must be enlarged. An artery and vein, usually in the arm above or below the elbow, are sewn together, to create a fistula, and arterial pressure eventually enlarges the vein. The enlarged vein can accommodate a cannula or large needle.

Why buy junk food or a supermarket ready meal when you can have the fun of making food from fresh ingredients?
Using fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat does not have to be either expensive or time consuming.
It will probably taste better and be healthier than ready-made alternatives.
Eating should be a good social experience with family or friends.

General Topic / 10 Ways to Marry the Wrong Person
May 14, 2011, 10:21:02 PM
~by Rabbi Dov Heller, M.A~

#1. You pick the wrong person because you expect him/her to change after you're married.

The classic mistake. Never marry potential. The golden rule is, if you can't be happy with the person the way he or she is now, don't get married. As a colleague of mine so wisely put it, "You actually can expect people to change after they're married... for the worst!"

So when it comes to the other person's spirituality, character, personal hygiene, communication skills, and personal habits, make sure you can live with these as they are now.

TRIPOLI (Reuters) â€" Western forces hit targets along the Libyan coast on Saturday, using strikes from air and sea to force Muammar Gaddafi's troops to cease fire and end attacks on civilians.

Libyan state television said 48 people had been killed and 150 wounded in the allied air strikes. The statement by the Libyan armed forces said the capital Tripoli and the cities of Sirte, Benghazi, Misrata and Zuwarah were hit.

French planes fired the first shots in what is the biggest international military intervention in the Arab world since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, destroying tanks and armored vehicles in the region of the rebels' eastern stronghold, Benghazi.

Hours later, U.S. and British warships and submarines launched 110 Tomahawk missiles against air defenses around the capital Tripoli and the western city of Misrata, which has been besieged by Gaddafi's forces, U.S. military officials said.

They said U.S. forces and planes were working with Britain, France, Canada and Italy in operation "Odyssey Dawn."

Gaddafi called it "colonial, crusader" aggression.

"It is now necessary to open the stores and arm all the masses with all types of weapons to defend the independence, unity and honor of Libya," he said in an audio message broadcast on state television hours after the strikes began.

Explosions and heavy anti-aircraft fire rattled Tripoli in the early hours of Sunday. The shooting was followed by defiant shouts of "Allahu Akbar" that echoed around the city center.

Tripoli residents said they had heard an explosion near the eastern Tajoura district, while in Misrata they said strikes had targeted an airbase where Gaddafi's forces were based.

A Reuters witness in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi reported loud explosions and anti-aircraft fire, but it was unclear which side was shooting or what had provoked the firing.

The international intervention, which followed weeks of diplomatic wrangling, was welcomed in Benghazi with a mix of apprehension and relief.

"We think this will end Gaddafi's rule. Libyans will never forget France's stand with them. If it weren't for them, then Benghazi would have been overrun tonight," said Iyad Ali, 37.

"We salute France, Britain, the United States and the Arab countries for standing with Libya. But we think Gaddafi will take out his anger on civilians. So the West has to hit him hard," said Khalid al-Ghurfaly, a civil servant, 38.

GADDAFI SEEN LOSING GRIP ON LIBYA

The air strikes, launched from a flotilla of some 25 coalition ships, including three U.S. submarines, in the Mediterranean, followed a meeting in Paris of Western and Arab leaders backing the military intervention.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said participants agreed to use "all necessary means, especially military" to enforce a U.N. Security Council calling for an end to attacks on civilians.

"Colonel Gaddafi has made this happen," British Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters after the meeting. "We cannot allow the slaughter of civilians to continue."

Some analysts have questioned the strategy for the military intervention, fearing Western forces might be sucked into a long civil war despite a U.S. insistence -- repeated on Saturday -- that it has no plans to send ground troops into Libya.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper suggested that outside powers hoped their intervention would be enough to turn the tide against Gaddafi and allow Libyans to force him out.

"It is our belief that if Mr. Gaddafi loses the capacity to enforce his will through vastly superior armed forces, he simply will not be able to sustain his grip on the country."

But analysts have questioned what Western powers will do if the Libyan leader digs in, especially since they do not believe they would be satisfied with a de facto partition which left rebels in the east and Gaddafi running a rump state in the west.

One participant at the Paris meeting said Clinton and others had stressed Libya should not be split in two. And on Friday, Obama specifically called on Gaddafi's forces to pull back from the western cities of Zawiyah and Misrata as well from the east.

"It's going to be far less straightforward if Gaddafi starts to move troops into the cities which is what he has been trying to do for the past 24 hours," said Marko Papic at the STRATFOR global intelligence group.

"Once he does that it becomes a little bit more of an urban combat environment and at that point it's going to be difficult to use air power from 15,000 feet to neutralize that."

The Libyan government has blamed rebels, who it says belong to al Qaeda, for breaking a ceasefire it announced on Friday.

In Tripoli, several thousand people gathered at the Bab al-Aziziyah palace, Gaddafi's compound that was bombed by U.S. warplanes in 1986, to show their support.

"There are 5,000 tribesmen that are preparing to come here to fight with our leader. They better not try to attack our country," said farmer Mahmoud el-Mansouri.

"We will open up Libya's deserts and allow Africans to flood to Europe to blow themselves up as suicide bombers."

By SHINO YUASA and ERIC TALMADGE, Associated Press Shino Yuasa And Eric Talmadge, Associated Press â€" Sat Mar 19, 4:52 pm ET

FUKUSHIMA, Japan â€" In the first sign that contamination from Japan's stricken nuclear complex had seeped into the food chain, officials said Saturday that radiation levels in spinach and milk from farms near the tsunami-crippled facility exceeded government safety limits.

Minuscule amounts of radioactive iodine also were found in tap water Friday in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan â€" although experts said none of those tests showed any health risks. The Health Ministry also said that radioactive iodine slightly above government safety limits was found in drinking water at one point Thursday in a sampling from Fukushima prefecture, the site of the nuclear plant, but later tests showed the level had fallen again.

Six workers trying to bring the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant back under control were exposed to more than 100 millisieverts of radiation â€" Japan's normal limit for those involved in emergency operations, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the complex. The government raised that limit to 250 millisieverts on Tuesday as the crisis escalated.

Officials said the crisis at the plant appeared to be stabilizing, with near-constant dousing of dangerously overheated reactors and uranium fuel, but the situation was still far from resolved. Japan's military planned to start dousing one troubled reactor â€" Unit 4 â€" for the first time shortly after daybreak Sunday morning.

"We more or less do not expect to see anything worse than what we are seeing now," said Hidehiko Nishiyama of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Japan has been grappling with a cascade of disasters unleashed by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11. The quake spawned a tsunami that ravaged Japan's northeastern coast, killing more than 7,600 people and knocking out cooling systems at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, causing the complex to leak radiation.

More than 11,000 people are still missing, and more than 452,000 are living in shelters.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, meanwhile, insisted the contaminated foods "pose no immediate health risk."

An expert in the United States also said the risk appeared limited and urged calm.

"The most troubling thing to me is the fear that's out of proportion to the risk," said Dr. Henry Duval Royal, a radiologist at Washington University Medical School.

29-year-old Vera Silva was ‘embarrassed’ by her boyfriend’s mid-flight proposal (Youtube).

Talk about sweeping a woman off her feet, literally.

An unsuspecting Portuguese air stewardess, Vera Silva, this week received what could be the most adorable in-flight marriage proposal thousands of feet in the air from her boyfriend.

After sneaking on board without her noticing, Joao Viera used the public address system to propose to his girl in front of dozens of passengers.

Shocked by the proposal, the pretty 29-year-old admitted to being embarrassed at her beau’s grand gesture.

“I thought about hiding in the bathroom, but then I thought twice,” she said.

She eventually agreed to marry him, to cheers and applause from the 80 passengers on the flight.

Crew members on board the flight from Lisbon to Barcelona helped Mr Vieira set up the magical moment.

The aircraft’s captain, Pedro Mathias, said, “In 35 years, this is the first time this has happened â€" it was funny.”

What have I got to do to make you love me
What have I got to do to make you care
What do I do when lightning strikes me
And I wake to find that you're not there

What do I do to make you want me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I say when it's all over
And sorry seems to be the hardest word

It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

What do I do to make you love me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I do when lightning strikes me
What have I got to do
What have I got to do
When sorry seems to be the hardest word

from a friend, just wanna share you too.

While there's no clear, fool-proof way to decipher your feelings for someone, there are certain ways to make the distinction between love, lust and infatuation clearer for yourself.

Steps

Could it be love?Write down everything that you associate with the person you're feeling strongly about. Example words on your brainstorm list could include love, butterflies, sex, holding hands, annoying snoring, gorgeous, etc.

Circle each attribute with a different color such as red for lust, yellow for infatuation, and green for love.
See which of the three feelings dominates the page. If one doesn't stand out (like if the distribution seems pretty equal), move on to the following steps for more insight.

Or is it lust?Read literature on the topic. Questions about love are timeless questions that have consumed mankind throughout the ages and are a major theme in many scriptures, tales from mythology, and literature. Read the story of David and Bathsheba from the Old Testament, 1st Corinthians from the New Testament, the story of Ali and Fatima, Echo and Narcissus, or Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Ask your friends or, if you find it easier, ask a complete and utter stranger, so that you get an honest opinion and an outsider's point of view. Tell that person how you feel, and ask them if it sounds primarily like love, infatuation, or lust.

Watch a movie that relates to your situation like "Cruel Intentions"
(which is about lust, and wanting what you can't have), "Down to You"
(which is about love and leaving it all down to the other person), "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (which is about none of them really but it's about making a mistake and putting it right), "The Notebook," which tells a tale of life-long love and commitment, "The Phantom of the Opera" (which is about both lust and infatuation) and definitely, "Titanic"
(which is about holding on to someone forever until you die - that is love - bittersweet love), also, perhaps, "The Fly" (which is about a woman who falls in love with a man who turns into a fly and then goes insane, and yet remains deeply emotionally attached through this agonizing life change - which is love) or High Fidelity
(which is about learning what love really is).
Yet understand, that movies are fiction that depict idealized rather than realistic love.

Whether you’ve started your own business from the ground up, or you’re working for a corporation, you play a role in building that company. General Topic / Equal Rights Marriage Law
June 27, 2010, 08:16:18 PM
note: happened to stumble this  blog ;)

We are living during a monumental time in California, and United States, history.

On May 15, 2008, Chief Justice Ronald M. George of the California Supreme Court issued a 172 page opinion, supported by a 4 to 3 vote of the Court, ending discriminatory California marriage law that segregated same-sex couples.

Not since 1948, when the same Court struck down the then socially accepted laws banning interracial marriages, has the fundamental principle of equal rights been so eloquently, and rightfully, applied.

It took nineteen years following the 1948 ruling for the Supreme Court of the United States to acknowledge the social stigma and affirm that anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional.

On March 12, 2004, four long years ago, in response and objection to the California ban on equal rights marriage, I wrote a letter (pdf, png) to Chief Justice Ronald M. George, to his six Supreme Court colleagues, to Congressman, to Senators, and to the Office of the President of the United States.

It is by no means coincidental that the fundamental principles articulated in my letter are synonymous with the backbone of Chief Justice Ronald M. George's written opinion.

Disappointingly, dissenters, seemingly armed with nothing more than prejudice as their compass, now attempt to amend our Constitution, paving the way for equal rights marriage law to become unconstitutional.

With the utmost regard and respect for your private, personal, and religious beliefs, I urge you to understand the significance and privilege granted to you through equal rights embalmed in our Constitution, and ask that you use your power of vote to reject the absurd introduction of inequality into the California and United States Constitutions.

Respectfully yours,

Daniel Lanovaz
