Basketball | NBA-PBA / FEU Coach Capacio Resigns
October 05, 2010, 12:26:11 PM
inquirer.net ......

Glen Capacio has decided to quit as head coach of Far Eastern University, four days after the Ateneo Blue Eagles swept his top-seeded Tamaraws in the UAAP championship series.

“I am resigning so they [FEU management] can freely decide and start planning the team’s future,” Capacio told the Inquirer yesterday.

“But I have no regrets in coaching FEU. We were competitive in the last four years and, at least, we reached the Finals this time.”

Capacio spoke publicly for the first time since his surprise exit in Game 2 of the best-of-three title series last Thursday, where he missed the entire second half due to hypertension.

FEU’s assistant mentors took over in the final two quarters of the must-win match for the Tamaraws as Capacio was rushed to Medical City after his blood pressure shot up late in the first half.

“It was due to stress,” said the 46-year-old Capacio. “I had no history of hypertension. I really felt tired. I also had little sleep that day.”

Capacio, who will undergo two more medical tests this week, is set to submit his formal resignation letter today.

“I still feel dizzy sometimes,” he said. “For now, I’ll be resting and just spend more time with my family.”

Capacio and his Tamaraws were the heavy favorites to win this year with a veteran roster and highly efficient players in every position.

Living up to their billing for most of the season, the Tamaraws topped the eliminations with a 12-2 record,  then disposed  La Salle in the Final Four only to stumble in embarrassing fashion in the championship round.

The Tamarawsâ€"who had MVP RR Garcia, Rookie of the Year Terrence Romeo, national team players Aldrech Ramos and JR Cawaling in their lineupâ€"absorbed a shocking 72-49 blowout loss in Game 1.

They came out fighting in Game 2, but the Eagles proved steadier in the final stretch to sew up the series, 65-62, and claim their third straight crown.

“For me, it was Ateneo’s championship experience that decided the series,” said Capacio. “It was our first time to play in the Finals and at least we fought hard in Game 2. I haven’t talked to my players since then, but they’ve sent text messages.”

Capacio, who finished his four-year stint with FEU with a 43-21 win-loss record, said he intends to focus on his duties as an assistant to Philippine Patriots coach Louie Alas in the AirAsia Asean Basketball League.

Recently, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas also offered Capacio to join Ateneo mentor Norman Black in the coaching staff of the RP team in next year’s Southeast ..........

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) â€" When Ateneo coach Norman Black announced last week that their two wins against the Adamson Falcons in the elimination round “could have gone either way,” it was just a mere ploy.

And the Falcons, playing for the first time in the Final Four since 2006, fell into Black’s trap as the three-peat seeking Ateneo Blue Eagles marched into the Finals of the UAAP Season 73 men’s basketball with a swashbuckling 68-55 win before a delirious Sunday crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Eagles used their vast playoffs experience and played with the confidence and swagger of a champion.  In stark contrast, the Falcons, who were confident coming into the game, regressed from their exceptional play in the elimination round and clearly lacked poise under pressure.

“We really prepared well against Adamson. We broke down everything we’ve seen them do the entire year and luckily for me, I have pretty intelligent players. They were able to grasp what we wanted to do defensively and execute it,” Black said.

The Eagles cut down the Falcons’ size as the smallest player â€" Emman Monfort â€" made the biggest difference in their march to the Finals opposite the league’s top team, the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws.

The 5’6’’ Monfort ably stepped up for backcourt mate Eric Salamat who was slowed down by fever last week.

Monfort, a recruit from Ateneo de Iloilo, displayed his huge heart that belied his small frame, scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.

He was perfect from the field in the opening period as the Eagles built a 16-5 lead that was never seriously threatened.

Spitfire guard

The ghastly rout extended the Eagles mastery over the Falcons to 28 games spanning 13 years.  Adamson last won against Ateneo way back on September 18, 1997 via a 54-52 squeaker when the team was still led by the duo of Eddie Laure and Gherome Ejercito.

“I wasn’t thinking about the match-ups. All I was thinking was how to play my role as the team’s point guard,” Monfort said.

The spitfire guard also collected 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals while Salamat, who only attended one practice session before the game due to fever, wound up with 7 points in just 19 minutes of play.

The Falcons bowed out this season with their highest win total [9-6] since the Kenneth Duremdes-led Falcons in 1993 posted an 11-3 record next to University of Santo Tomas’ 14-0 sweep.

The title showdown between Ateneo and FEU, which will start on Saturday at 4 p.m., will be aired live over ABS-CBN’s Channel 2 for the first time since the league’s tie-up with the network at the turn of the century. It will also be aired live on BALLS HD 167.

FEU reached the Finals last Thursday after defeating the No. 4 seed De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, 69-59, in overtime.

FEU’s Cawaling won’t miss Game 1

Meanwhile, FEU forward JR Cawaling got the green light to play in Game 1 of the UAAP best-of-three Finals.

Cawaling, a Smart Gilas standout, escaped possible suspension after the UAAP Technical Committee led by league Commissioner Ato Badolato reviewed the tape of the FEU-DLSU Final Four match where he was ejected from the game.

Cawaling was tossed out after being assessed with an unsportsmanlike foul on DLSU guard Simon Atkins and a technical foul for a verbal tussle in the 4:27 mark of the second quarter with the score tied at 22-all.

“There was no intention to harm. Cawaling’s unsportsmanlike foul was meant to stop the fastbreak play, not to hurt the player,” explained Badolato.

In that play, Atkins was streaking forward and was about to throw a pass to a teammate near their basket when Cawaling suddenly stopped and bumped the La Salle guard, who fell down sprawling on the floor.

Atkins, who was hurt, immediately got up to confront Cawaling. Both players exchanged some words and pushed each other while the referees and their teammates tried to pacify them.  Cawaling was even seen on TV replays pushing the referee, who was trying to calm him down.

Both were assessed with technical fouls while Cawaling got an additional unsportsmanlike foul that led to his ejection.

“He is a key player in our rotation. ‘Nung nawala siya, I went to three-guard line up for most parts of the game,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio, who emphasized the importance of Cawaling in his team’s quest for the elusive title since 2005

Boxing and Boxers / John Arum found dead
September 04, 2010, 03:23:34 PM

A search team in a helicopter in North Cascades National Park outside of Seattle located the body of John Arum, the eldest son of Top Rank boxing promoter Bob Arum, on Friday.

John Arum's body was discovered at approximately 4:30 p.m. PT at the 7,700-foot level of the north face of Storm King Mountain, which rises 8,815 feet, according to Kerry Olson, public information officer for the park.

Olson said Arum's body was discovered about 300 feet below where his backpack had been found on Thursday.

"We don't know where he was on the mountain when he fell, but we know it was at least a 300-foot fall, but we don't know how far he fell," Olson said.

Arum, an experienced hiker, was 49. The search began on Monday after he failed to return from the hiking trip. He was hiking alone.

According to family members, Arum's goal was to reach the summit of the 100 highest peaks in Washington state. He had hiked more than 80 at the time of his death on the mountain about 85 miles northeast of Seattle.

Olson said Arum's body has not been retrieved.

"It's a very steep location and unstable with loose rock," Olson said. "It's an area where we can't repel down to it or climb up to it. We are working on a recovery plan and reaching out to see if we can get some help to bring his body back to his family."

Olson said the aerial search began on Wednesday when rainy and cloudy weather cleared.

"His body was in an area that had previously been covered with snow," she said. "[Friday] we had very warm weather and the snow melted and he was visible from an aerial search."

Bob Arum, along with other family members, were notified in person shortly after the discovery, Olson said. She said the family had been staying at a compound where the search was being co-coordinated in the park.

Bob Arum was in Los Angeles on Tuesday to kick off this week's three-city media tour to promote Manny Pacquiao's fight with Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Arum left the tour after Tuesday's news conference in Los Angeles and the tour continued to New York and Dallas without him.

Olson said there is an average of one hiking death a year at the park and Arum's was the first of the year.

"We've had six other search and rescues this year where we were able to find and save the others," Olson said.

John Arum, one of Bob Arum's three adult children, was a Seattle environmental attorney.

Bob Arum and his spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Tennis / Wimbledon 2010
June 22, 2010, 06:22:54 AM
For Roger Federer, Wimbledon nearly ended at the beginning.

The six-time champion overcame a two-set deficit to avert a monumental first-round upset, beating Alejandro Falla 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0.

Federer has reached the tournament final each of the past seven years, but Monday he barely survived the traditional opening match on Centre Court as defending champion.

"I live another day," Federer said. "This one is one I should have lost. That's sometimes how grass-court tennis works."

The 60th-ranked and unseeded Falla had lost all 11 sets in his previous four matches against Federer, but the Colombian played brilliant tennis to take charge of the match early. The turnaround came in the fourth set with Falla serving for the match and three points from victory, when Federer broke for only the second time.

Federer played his best after that. It was the sixth time he has won after trailing by two sets.

Nograles: What's happening to our party?
MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) - Two top officials of the ruling Lakas-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-KAMPI-CMD) tendered their resignations on Wednesday, a day after the party's standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro gave up his role as party chairman.

Sarangani Gov. Rene Miguel Dominguez said he resigned as party president to allow the next Lakas-KAMPI chairman a free hand in choosing his replacement. Hours later, Lakas-KAMPI-CMD secretary general Francis Xavier Manglapus also followed suit, citing similar reasons.

In their resignation letters, the two officials cited the recent resignation of Gilbert Teodoro as chairman of the Lakas-KAMPI-CMD party. Both thanked the party's National Executive Committee for being given the privilege to serve the party.

Dominguez and Manglapus were proclaimed national president and secretary general, respectively, of the ruling Lakas-KAMPI-CMD party in November 2009.

Dominguez is the incumbent governor of Sarangani province. He is seeking a third term under the Sarangani Reconciliation and Reformation Organization (SARRO), which has a tie-up with Lakas-KAMPI-CMD. The bets from SARRO are up against the full slate of  the People's Champ Party (PCP), led by boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, who has tie ups with the Nacionalista Party. Teodoro tendered his resignation as chairman of the ruling party on Tuesday. He said he wants to focus on his presidential campaign. He said the party needs a chairman who can respond on a 24/7 basis to the needs of its candidates. (Read: Gibo quits as Lakas-Kampi chairman)

Top Lakas-KAMPI officials, meanwhile, admitted that they were surprised by the sudden resignations of Teodoro and Dominguez ......
