The days are rolling. And the Search for Miss Bohol International 2009 is fast approaching!

Set in July in time for the Tigum Bol-anon Tibouk Kalibutan (TBTK) celebration, Miss Bohol International invites young Boholano women in the province, across the country, and around the world to be part of the event, which is held only once in  three years.

The event gathers young women with talent, beauty, wit, and character to serve as Bohol’s ambassadors of goodwill. In a more meaningful perspective, the event aims to promote camaraderie among these young women, instill in them the Boholano’s distinct love and pride of place, and develop social responsibility towards Bohol and its people.

As of press time, there are 10 candidates who will compete for this year's crown. Aside from workshops/lectures aimed at developing holistic personalities, the candidates will also engage in activities aimed at promoting awareness of Bohol's rich cultural heritage.

Support our young ladies. Don't miss the Talents Night on July 21 (venue to be announced) and the Pageant Night on July 24, 2009 at the Holy Name University Gymnasium.

Miss Bohol International is organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Bohol Chocolate Hills headed by JCI Mem. Iris Pacaldo, the chapter's president, with JCI Mem. Vilma Yorong, MBI Project Chairman, and JCI Mem. Pureza Chatto, Pageant Coordinator.

Watch out for more announcements!  ;D

Hi friends! Since GEC is not coming out yet, let's just meet up in his honor. Let's drink the wine that Sir Ben gave GEC (which is with me). It's accumulating dust in my room.

Let's meet up.

When?

Where?

And of course, GEC is most welcome to tag along...  ;D

Hi, TB people!

Lorenzo, on the other post, has been posting photos of a country he visited. It gave me the interest of seeing photos of the new countries you now call home. (I know, Bohol will always be home!) Care to post some? Please, tell us more about the countries, its people and their culture. This could be a nice learning experience!

Mcluhan’s Global Village: A Bohol Experience

Yes, I wrote about him before. It’s not that he’s my favorite (or is he?) but Marshall Mcluhan and his theories on global village and technological determinism keep on trailing behind me like a tail of sorts (ooops, as if I have one?) With technological determinism, he contended that technology is an extension of the human faculty. He talked about the wheel as an extension of the feet and the book as extension of the eyes. Today, we say that the computer and the internet have extended most of our faculties- our eyes, mouths, ears, arms, hearts, (and our entire being, that is) and enabled us to reach other people just by clicking the mouse and tinkering with the keyboard. Indeed, technology has shrunk the world into a smaller community and made interaction among world-wide neighbors more constant and immediate. The world has become Mcluhan’s global village.

Now, the tail is wiggling as I browse the internet enjoying my interaction with fellow Boholanos from all over the world in Tubag Bohol at www.tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com. For the past few weeks, my own faculties have been extended through Tubag Bohol, which its members now call their virtual home. This addictive website created by Michael Ligalig (yes, the writer/poet Mike, who is now based in Thailand) allows its users to post and read news updates and articles of various topics from politics, education, history, culture, tourism, entertainment, and even chismis among others. And since it works as a forum, it allows users to post comments and feedback. Thus, the site’s name.  Although, it does not have a chatroom, it works like one with users logging online 24/7.

Most of its users hide their real identities by using nicks and I only know a few of them in person but still Tubag Bohol is a place where I meet new friends as we exchange our thoughts and feelings about many things, debate on certain issues, talk about ourselves and other people, and share our love and pride for Bohol and its people. For my part, it also serves as my mental workout place where I can blog my thoughts.

Although Mcluhan contended that the medium is the message that leaves an impact on its user, I still believe that the message brought by the medium initiated by the user still has the greater impact on us. What I find heartwarming is how these Boholanos (wherever they are in the world) share their dreams for Bohol, our homeland.  Yes, most of them may be thousands of miles away but they have found means by which they can extend their faculties and virtually return home.

Mcluhan is right. What he failed to explain is why Boholanos have the need to return home labaw na kung mosakit na ang tiyan like the giants who formed the Chocolate Hills… hehe! That’s another story!

Come, join us!

***
Shrinking the world a little bit more is station DYRD, which is now on air 24/7 with a world-wide coverage through www.dyrdam.com. It’s extending our ears allowing us to hear more stories from Bohol wherever we are in the world. Speaking from the DYRD’s end, we say, “Good morning, good afternoon, good evening to everyone!”

Now, the global village is not just borderless but timeless as well.

***
Oh, well! The internet (as well as other technology and electronic gadgets- cellphones included) may have bridged our hearts from miles away and the words and emoticons on our screens may have put smiles on our faces, but nothing can replace the real presence of friends and loved ones we miss.

Gapaabot gihapon ’ta sa ilang pag-uli…

:P

Who's Who of Bohol / LUTGARDO "GARDY" LUZA LABAD
July 25, 2007, 10:58:11 AM
Mr. Lutgardo "Gardy" Luza Labad of Baclayon, Bohol is an award-winning composer/musical scorer/director (both for film and theater) and well-respected theater director. Since he came home to Bohol, he had created a stir among cultural advocates leading them to pursue stronger advocacies in the preservation, conservation, and promotion of our intangible and tangible cultural heritage. He is also an advocate for our creative industry as a means to uplift the socio-economic well-being of our people.

Sir Gardy is now the chairman of the Bohol Arts and Cultural Heritage (BACH) Council here in Bohol. He has a big heart for local talents molding them to become better artists and thoughtful Boholanos to Bohol.

For more information about him, search the net. There's also an entry about him at the Internet Movie Database, Earth's biggest movie database (imdb.com).

Catch the re-run of Sandugo Oracles now dubbed as "Talinghaga sa Sandugo." The artistic rendition of the Sandugo will be staged on July 22, 6PM at the CPG Sports Complex. Be enthralled by the talents and skills of our local artists, singers, dancers, and thespians as they tell the story of the legendary Karyapa, Haring Gala, and Katuna as they faced the difficult decision-making points in their lives whether to welcome the Spanish fleet of Legaspi or not.

Last year's performance was laud by artists, media, and theater enthusiasts in the national scene. This year, the production vowed to make it better. This is participated in by more or less 200 youthful participants- individual artists and performers, students (UB and HNU), Teatro Bol-anon, Loboc Youth Choir, Diwanag Dance Troupe, and Himig Diwa Choir. Plans of including Luke Mejares, Cesar Montano, and Rich Asuncion in the production is on the process. This is directed by the award-winning musical director and theater veteran Mr. Gardy Labad while the libretto was composed by historian Marianito Luspo with music composed by Labad and well-known composer Mr. Lucien Letaba.

Come and be part of the artistic celebration! ;)

Sam Malaki is a superior tenor based in LA. He recently came home to the Philippines to perform in several concerts- at the CCP and other parts of the country. His brother Efrem, a singer, talent manager, and a producer of records and concerts, are raised in Leyte. Their roots come from Anda, Bohol. Their mother is an Amper. Please google SAL MALAKI for more information. I have some of his records courtesy of Kuya Efrem. They're very good.
