Jokes and Humor / Joke of the day
November 22, 2014, 08:10:32 PM

An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow." The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained.

"Well, doc, it's like this--first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door, and she tried too. First with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing."

The doctor was shocked! "You asked your neighbor?"

The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get the jar open."

from my mailbox

‘A SHOT OF WHISKEY’
In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey.

THE WHOLE NINE YARDS
American fighter planes in WW2 had machine guns that were fed by a belt of cartridges. The average plane held belts that were 27 feet (9 yards) long. If the pilot used up all his ammo he was said to have given it the whole nine yards.

BUYING THE FARM
This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if you died you "bought the farm" for your survivors.

IRON CLAD CONTRACT
This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken.

PASSING THE BUCK/THE BUCK STOPS HERE
Most men in the early west carried a jack knife made by the Buck knife company. When playing poker it as common to place one of these Buck knives in front of the dealer so that everyone knew who he was. When it was time for a new dealer the deck of cards and the knife were given to the new dealer. If this person didn't want to deal he would "pass the buck" to the next player. If that player accepted then “the buck stopped there".

RIFF RAFF
The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were
expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a “riff" and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.

COBWEB
The Old English word for "spider" was "cob".

SHIP STATE ROOMS
Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.

SHOWBOAT
These were floating theaters built on a barge that was pushed by a steamboat. These played small town along the Mississippi River. Unlike the boat shown in the movie "Showboat" these did not have an engine. They were gaudy and attention grabbing which is why we say someone who is being the life of the party is "showboating".

OVER A BARREL
In the days before CPR a drowning victim would be placed face down over a barrel and the barrel would be rolled back and forth in a effort to empty the lungs of water. It was rarely effective. If you are over a barrel you are in deep trouble.

BARGE IN
Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi in large barges pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control and would sometimes swing into piers or other boats. People would say they "barged in".

HOGWASH
Steamboats carried both people and animals. Since pigs smelled so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other filth that was washed off was considered useless "hog wash".

CURFEW
The word "curfew" comes from the French phrase "couvre-feu", which means "cover the fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles. It was later adopted into Middle English as "curfeu", which later became the modern "curfew". In the early American colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the center of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out of control during the night it was required that, by an agreed upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called-a "curfew".

HOT OFF THE PRESS
As the paper goes through the rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it is hot. The expression means to get immediate information.

Butterflies have large, often brightly colored wings, and a conspicuous, fluttering flight. Culturally, butterflies are a popular motif in the visual and literary arts, signifying beauty, freedom and the the coming of spring.

You’ll find these beautiful specimen in the canopies of the Central American forests. The Morpho butterflies are easy to spot thanks to their massive, bright, iridescent blue colored wings. The real beauty, though, is when the blue Morpho flies: the contrasting bright blue and dull brown colors flash, making it look like it is appearing and disappearing.

Being under the Spanish rule for more than 300 years, almost every town or city in the Philippines has architectural gems. While most have been sold off, or deeply neglected, or are already in ruins, some have thankfully survived through the centuries and are still intact and relatively well-preserved.
For the history buffs, these five heritage towns are worth visiting more than once.
Taal, Batangas
The charming town of Taal, 112 kilometers (70 miles) south of Manila, is more known for what is said to be the world’s smallest volcano of the same name. But there is more to discover here like the grand ancestral homes lining up its main street and the church of Basilica de San Martin de Tours, which is the largest in Asia.
In the late 19th century, the local coffee industry boomed. Due to the growing financial prosperity of middle class businessmen, numerous Bahay na Bato (stone houses) were built which we can all see still standing in the town today.

Taal town is a marvel. Photography enthusiasts will surely have a great time paying Galleria Taal a visit. This is an ancestral house turned into a museum , which houses a collection of antique cameras and old photos.
For those who yearn for a taste of the past, Villa Tortuga offers a dinner package where you get to wear period dresses and have your pictures taken with faded photographs as your souvenirs. It is a perfect way to experience the life of the elite during the Spanish regime.
Basilica de San Martin de Tours Batangas

Don’t miss visiting the mansion of local heroine, Marcela Agoncillo. She was one of the three women who produced the very first hand-sewn official Philippine flag which was unveiled during the announcement of Philippine independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.

Did you know the saying "God willing and the Creek don't rise&qu ot; was in
reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? It was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century. He was a politician and Indian diplomat. While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington . In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise." Because he capitalized the word "Creek" it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water.

*********************************

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' t herefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)

******************************

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig... ' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

*********************************

In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal.To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'

*********************************

Personal hygiene left much room for improvement.. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, wh en they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . .. . Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'

*********************************

Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and
dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied lace..

*********************************

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades...' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck..'

********************************

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs , and bars. They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'

**********************************

At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's'.

**********************************

One more: bet you didn't know this!

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem....how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quick ly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey; Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you?)

Quotable Quotes / getting divorced
December 30, 2013, 10:17:12 PM

An elderly man in Oklahoma calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day son, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are getting a divorce; 45 years of marriage... and that much misery is enough!”

"Dad, what are you talking about?" the son yells.

"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old dad explained. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Hong Kong and tell her!”.

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this.”

She calls her elderly father immediately, and screams at him, "You are not getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, you hear me?" she yelled as she hung up the phone.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay", he says, "it's all set. They're both coming for Christmas and paying their own air-fare.”

Quotable Quotes / modern ten commandments
December 29, 2013, 10:36:18 PM
Someone has written these beautiful words. Must read
and try to understand the deep meaning of it. They are like the ten commandments to follow in life all the time.

1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout.

2. A Car's WINDSHIELD is so large & the Rear view Mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.

3. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.

4. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either.

5. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!

6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end!

7. When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.

8. A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision!"

9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10. WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE.

Bible Study / Our Lady of Isles, Solin Croatia
December 04, 2013, 02:45:04 AM

Extremely important city of rich Croatian history is Solin which combines important Croatian and early Christian cultural and historical heritage. Solin is situated northeast of the town Split, with whom he eventually grew into a single urban unit. Still, it is an independent local unit, and its name comes from the old Latin name - Salona.

Early Christian history

However, Solin also had an important role in the early Christian history, and the river Jadro which flows through the town is even called Croatian Jordan. In fact, an island called Lady's islet is situated on the river and it is the location of the first christening in Croatia. Queen Jelena raised two churches there, one of the Blessed Virgin Mary and one of St. Stephen. The remains of the basilica of St. Peter and Moses, today called Hollow Church, were also founded there and it is a place where the Croatian king Zvonimir was crowned. Lady's islet is the oldest shrine in Croatia, there was held a youth meeting with Pope John Paul II. during his visit to Croatia.

Inspiration & Hope / Pope´s embrace
November 26, 2013, 10:03:24 PM

In early November Vinicio traveled with his aunt and dozens of others from northern Italy to Vatican City, where they attended a morning public audience held by Pope Francis. Vinicio, who has difficulty staying on his feet for long, was in a wheelchair.

"We didn't think we would be so close to the Pope, but the Swiss Guard kept ushering us forward until we were in a corner in the front row," recalled Lotta, a women in her late sixties with a quick smile and an infectious laugh.

"When he came close to us," she said, "I thought he would give me his hand. Instead he went straight to Vinicio and embraced him tightly. I thought he wouldn't give him back to me he held him so tightly. We didn't speak. We said nothing but he looked at me as if he was digging deep inside, a beautiful look that I would never have expected."

Vinicio, accustomed to stares of shock and fear, was initially confused by the pontiff's lack of hesitation. "He didn't have any fear of my illness," he said. "He embraced me without speaking ... I quivered. I felt a great warmth."

In moments of drama, odd details often remain vivid. "I looked down at his shoes," Vinicio's aunt recalled. "They were like this," she said, holding her hands apart and laughing. "I thought yes, this is someone who really walks."

The entire encounter lasted little over a minute, and soon Vinicio and his aunt were back on the bus, Vinicio in a state of combined shock and joy.

"He was almost not himself," Lotta said. "He was shaking."

"I felt I was returning home ten years younger, as if a load had been lifted," Vinicio said.

Tira-Pasagad | Saksak-Sinagol / pahaloka ko Day...
November 15, 2013, 04:25:43 AM
Back on January 9th, a group of Wadesboro, North Carolina bikers were riding east on Hwy 74 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Pee Dee River Bridge.

So they stopped.

George, their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of
gawkers, past the State Trooper who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says, "Hey Baby - whatcha doin' up there on that railin'?"

She says tearfully, "I'm going to commit suicide!"
While he didn't want to appear too "insensitive," George also didn't want to miss this "be-a-legend" opportunity either. So, he asked: "Well, before you jump, Honey-Babe, why don't you give ol' George here your best last kiss?"

So with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that, and it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one. After they breathlessly finished, George gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper, and then says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I have
ever had! That's a real talent you're wasting there, Sugar Shorts. You could be famous if you rode with me. Why are you committing suicide?"

"My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl."

..It's still unclear whether he jumped or was pushed.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/german-coalition-talks-move-closer-to-new-dual-citizenship-law-a-933523.html

For the first time in Germany, politicians seem close to a deal that would extend the right to dual citizenship to children of immigrants and naturalized Germans. The national identity of thousands of young people hangs in the balance.

The subject of dual citizenship has long been a political flashpoint in Germany. In recent years, calls have mounted from the left for the country to overturn its prohibitive approach and make it easier for people to hold two passports. Yet heavy opposition, including from Chancellor Angela Merkel, kept it from becoming a reality.

Our Yearly Dementia Test-- only 4 questions

Our Yearly Dementia Test

It's that time of year for us to take our annual senior citizen test.
Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it!
Below is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to the last test. Some may think it is too easy but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty.
Take the test presented here to determine if you're losing it or not.
The spaces below are so you don't see the answers until you've made your answer.
OK, relax, clear your mind and begin.

1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: 'bread.' If you said 'toast' give up now and do something else..
Try not to hurt yourself.
If you said, bread, go to Question 2.

2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said 'milk,' don't attempt the next question. Your brain is over-stressed and may even overheat. Content yourself with reading more appropriate literature such as Auto World.
However, if you said 'water', proceed to question 3.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said 'green bricks,' why are you still reading these??? If you said 'glass,' go on to Question 4.

4. Without using a calculator - You are driving a bus from London to
Milford Haven in Wales . In London , 17 people get on the bus.
In Reading , 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on.
In Swindon , 2 people get off and 4 get on.
In Cardiff , 11 people get off and 16 people get on.

Philippine Business News / Blast in CDO
July 27, 2013, 02:16:56 PM
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/453767/blast-kills-6-injures-28-in-cagayan-de-oro

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY â€" An explosion from a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) killed six and injured at least 28 others in an upscale watering hole at about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The dead from the blast at the Lim Ket Kai complex included an incumbent board member of Misamis Oriental, a doctor, and sales representatives of medical companies.

Killed instantly were Anthony Canete of Iligan City, Ryan Estose of Megaheights Subdivision, Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City, and Emmanuel Palafox of Zamboanga City. All three reportedly were employees of pharmaceutical Sandoz Philippines Corporation.

Misamis Oriental board member Roldan Lagbas, a scion of a political clan in the province,  died after being brought to the Cagayan de Oro Medical Center.

The two others who also died after being brought to another hospital were identified as Dr. Erwin Malanay and Antonio C. Paredes, a pharmaceutical sales representative.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Director Graciano Mijares, in an interview at the site of the blast, said PNP regional director PC Superintendent Catalino Bagaslao Rodriguez Jr. has ordered the formation of a special investigation task group composed of units of both the regional and city police to look into the incident.

The explosion, which broke glass panes, upturned tables and chairs, and damaged cars parked about 30 meters away, was heard as far as the national road, about 4 kilometers away.

Police investigators are looking into the possibility that CCTV cameras at Kyla’s Bistro and Candy’s, adjoining restaurants at the Lim Ket Kai complex may shed light on the identities of the suspects.

Mijares, however, declined to say what type of explosive may have been used.

“We will have to wait for the results of the investigation of our post blast investigators,” Mijares said.

Businessman Noel Arcenas, who rents out a sound system for the party venue and who  survived the blast, said there were at least 100 people at the popular restaurant row when the explosion occurred.

The row of restaurants is usually transformed into a large party venue with a live band playing during Friday and Saturday nights with patrons spilling into the parking areas fronting the restaurants.

“I felt then heard the blast,” Arcenas, who was about 15 meters away from the epicentre of the blast, said.

“I looked around and saw this ball of white smoke,” Arcenas said.

“People were running away bloodied and survivors were dragging at least seven or eight people away from the blast site,” Arcenas said.

Some 800 doctors who are Lung Specialists (Pulmonologists) and other allied health professionals from all over the country are also in the city for the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) 16th Midyear National Convention at the Grand Caprice, Limketkai Center.

“That is probably the reason why there were a lot of doctors and medical sales representatives at the party venue,” Cagayan de Oro City vice mayor Ian Acenas said.

“I call on the City government to thoroughly look into this matter as this has an adverse impact on the peace and order situation of the city,” Acenas said.

Misamis Oriental vice governor Joey Pelaez, a colleague of Lagbas, said he was skeptical that the blast may have targeted the first term board member.

“Roldan Lagbas has no known enemies,” Pelaez said, “he is a neophyte politician despite coming from a known political clan.”

“It is difficult to understand what may have motivated the suspects to undertake this terror act,” Pelaez said.

Philippine Provinces / Asparagus, who knew?
July 20, 2013, 02:44:48 PM
Asparagus -- Who knew?
( from my mailbox)
My Mom had been taking the full-stalk canned style
asparagus, pureed it and took 4 tablespoons in
the morning and 4 tablespoons later in the day. She did
this for over a month. She is on chemo pills for Stage 3
lung cancer in the pleural area and her cancer cell
count went from 386 down to 125 as of this past week.
Her oncologist said she will not need to see him for 3
months.

THE ARTICLE:

Several years ago I met a man seeking asparagus for a
friend who had cancer. He gave me a copy of an article,
entitled "Asparagus For Cancer" printed in the
Cancer News Journal, December 1979.  I will share it
here, just as it was shared with me: I am a
biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet
to health or over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned
of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that
asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked
with him on his project.  We have accumulated a number
of favorable case histories.  Here are a few examples:

Case No. 1, A man with an almost hopeless case
of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who
was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting
the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to
detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a
schedule of strenuous exercise.

Case No. 2, A successful businessman, 68 years old,
suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years.
After years of medical treatments, including radiation
without improvement, he began taking asparagus. Within 3
months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor
had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.

Case No. 3, On March 5th 1971, a man who had lung
cancer was put on the operating table where they found
lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable.
The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case
hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the Asparagus
therapy and immediately started taking it.  By August,
x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had
disappeared.  He is now back at his regular business
routine.

Case No. 4, A woman had been troubled for a number of
years with skin cancer. She developed different skin cancers
which were diagnosed by the acting specialist as advanced.
Within 3 months after beginning asparagus therapy, the skin
specialist said her skin looked fine with no more skin lesions.
This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured
her kidney disease, which had started in 1949. She had over
10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government
disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition.
She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the
asparagus treatment.

I was not surprised at this result as `The elements of
materia medica', edited in1854 by a Professor at the
University of Pennsylvania , stated that asparagus was
used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even
referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of
asparagus in dissolving stones. Note the dates!
We would have other case histories but the medical
establishment has interfered with our obtaining some
of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to
spread this good news and help us to gather a large
number of case histories that will overwhelm the
medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and
natural remedy.

For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before
using.  Fresh or canned asparagus can be used. I have
corresponded with the two leading caners of asparagus,
Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands
contain no pesticides or preservatives.  Place the cooked
asparagus in a blender and liquefy to make a puree.
Store in the refrigerator. Give the patient 4 full tablespoons
twice daily, morning and evening. Patients usually show
some improvement in 2-4 weeks. It can be diluted with
water and used as a cold or hot drink. This suggested
dosage is based on present experience, but certainly
larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in
some cases.

As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that
'what cures can prevent.' Based on this theory, my wife
and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage
withour meals. We take 2 tablespoons diluted in water
to suit our taste with breakfast and with dinner. I take
mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold. For years we
have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as
part of our regular checkups. The last blood survey,
taken by a medical doctor who specializes in the
nutritional approach to health, showed substantial
improvements in all categories over the last one, and
we can attribute these improvements to nothing but
the asparagus drink. As a biochemist, I have made an
extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the
proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus
fits in better with the latest theories about cancer.

Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called
histones, which are believed to be active in controlling
cell growth. For that reason, I believe asparagus can
be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth
normalizer. That accounts for its action on cancer and
in acting as a general body tonic. In any event,
regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest, is
a harmless substance. The FDA cannot prevent you
from using it and it may do you much good. It has been
reported by the US National Cancer Institute, that
asparagus is the highest tested food containing
glutathione, which is considered one of the body's
most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.

Just a side note...in case you are wondering why this has
not been made public, there is no profit in curing cancer!

Homemade Natural Wrinkle Removers:

Even though they say wrinkles make you wiser, there are many ways to look wiser without the wrinkles that are natural, there is no need to buy expensive anti-aging cream or treatments. You won’t need to expend more than a couple of bucks… here is where the real wisdom is. Bananas and their peel have been used for centuries to help with many skin conditions, including acne, wrinkles, warts, psoriasis and poison ivy.

1. Mash a banana until it has a creamy texture and apply it to your entire face for 30 minutes, bananas have so much more going for them than just a delicious and nutritious treat.
2. Coconut oil is the best option when it comes to natural wrinkle removal, since it rebuilds our skin tissue and will also leave your face skin moisturized and feeling smooth and beautiful.
3. Pineapple juice can easily rival any treatment, in fact it is much better, because they are packed with the enzyme bromelain which naturally eats away our top layer of skin when applied topically and leaves the new fresh skin underneath.

Coconut milk is loaded with beneficial fats, nutrients and minerals. Many commercial beauty products use coconut milk as an ingredient due to its natural ability to calm and hydrate irritated skin. You'll find canned coconut milk at most grocery stores. Purchase unsweetened coconut milk to use for your skin, but buy organic coconut milk whenever possible.
Moisturizer

Natural-Home Remedies suggests using coconut milk to make gentle skin moisturizers at home. Coconut milk has naturally soothing properties that replace moisture in dehydrated skin. You can make a skin-moisturizing bath at home by adding a cup of rose petals, half a cup of rose water and a cup of coconut milk to a lukewarm bath. Soak in this bath for 15 minutes to restore moisture to dry skin. Or you can use coconut milk on its own as a skin moisturizer. Rub coconut milk into your skin and allow it to absorb for 30 minutes to promote healthy skin.

Coconut milk is a good ingredient to add to natural, homemade moisturizing masks, according to Natural-Home Remedies. You can make a skin mask by combining coconut milk with honey and almond powder to create a thick paste, which you apply to your face and rinse off after 15 minutes. You can also make a mask by soaking half a cup of brown rice in a cup of warm water for an hour, then straining them, and placing the rice in a blender. To the blender, add half a cucumber, chopped, a quarter cup of pumpkin puree and 2 tsp. coconut oil. Blend until smooth; then apply to your face and leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing off.

Treatment for Ailments

According to OptiDerma, coconut milk can treat a variety of skin ailments when applied topically. Coconut milk's moisturizing properties soothe the symptoms of psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema. It also prevents wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots. The natural fatty acids found in coconut milk make it an excellent topical treatment for dry, irritated skin, according to CareFair.com. These fatty acids allow coconut milk to remove harmful bacteria from your skin without overdrying.
After-Sun Care

Natural-Home Remedies also suggests using plain coconut milk at home to treat sun-damaged skin. You can ease the pain of burns or rashes caused by sun exposure by applying coconut milk topically to the affected areas and leaving it on overnight or bathing in it. If you apply it topically, rinse it off in the morning with cool water. The coconut milk's fats and oils will help reduce redness and restore moisture to sunburned skin.

Vatican City, June 12, 2013 (Zenit.org) Junno Arocho Esteves | 1998 hits

Pope Francis has approved the date and theme of the 51st International Eucharist Congress which will take place in Cebu, Philippines in 2016. The Pontifical Commission for the International Eucharistic Congresses stated that they were informed by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, on the Holy Father’s approval.

The international event will be held on January 25th-31st under the theme “Christ in you, our hope of glory” which is taken from the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians. The choice of the Philippines as the next venue for the congress was announced by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI during a video message at the conclusion of the previous Eucharistic Congress held in Dublin in June 2012.

“I would like to invite you to join me in praying for God’s blessing upon the next International Eucharistic Congress, which will take place in 2016 in the city of Cebu!” Benedict XVI said in the video message.

“To the people of the Philippines I send warm greetings and an assurance of my closeness in prayer during the period of preparation for this great ecclesial gathering. I am confident that it will bring lasting spiritual renewal not only to them but to all the participants from across the globe.”

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines expressed their desire that the upcoming congress will deepen Eucharistic devotion in the country as well as prepare for the 500th Anniversary of the evangelization in the Philippines.

Located in the heart of the Philippine archipelago, Cebu was discovered by Ferdinand Megellan in 1521 and was received by the indigenous king, Humabon, who shortly after converted to Christianity along with his queen, Juana, and 400 of his subjects. To commemorate the conversion, Magellan gave the queen a statue of the child Jesus (Santo Niño) as well as erecting a cross at the place where they converted. Filippinos commemorate the feast of the Santo Niño on the third week in January.

“The celebration of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in this Country, the only one with a Catholic majority in Asian continent, is an important challenge to strengthen the missionary/evangelizing perspective as well as for identifying new ways in celebrating the Congresses themselves,” stated a communique by the Pontifical Commission for International Eucharistic Congresses.

The Pontifical Commission also stated that the theme of the congress wishes to underline the “inherent eschatological tension in the Eucharist offers an impulse in the historical path of Christians.”

Within the theme of hope, the announcement of the gift of God to the young, of which Asia is very rich, will be recovered as well as the commitment to the ranks of the poor of the continent,” the commission stated.

General Topic / Baking soda cure for cancer?
July 06, 2013, 09:57:12 PM
A One Man’s Story

When Vernon Johnston was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, his options were few. The standard treatment required him to submit to bouts of chemotherapy and hope that the poisonous drugs that will be fed into his body can kill off cancer cells faster that they can kill off healthy, normal cells.

Chemotherapy represents a drastic measure that oncologists are all too eager to recommend and an option patients dread with good reasons. Often times, chemotherapy leaves the body drained and the immune system damaged.

When it fails, and it does fail often, chemotherapy severely reduces the chances of success of any subsequent treatment options. Yet 9 out 10 cancer patients turn to chemotherapy first.

In Vernon’s case, the prostate cancer was already advanced and had metastasized to his bones. Chemotherapy would have been long and expensive and there was no guarantee that those drugs would work.

So, Vernon took matters into his own hands. On his brother’s advice, Vernon decided to raise his body’s pH to combat the cancer spreading in his body. To do this, he sought to obtain cesium chloride.

Cesium therapy is a well-known treatment protocol in cancer therapy. And it is an option doctors rarely give their cancer patients.

Treating cancer with cesium has been shown to have a 50% cure rate. Compared to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, cesium therapy produces better results. This cure rate is even more impressive considering the fact that most cancer patients receiving cesium have already undergone and failed to respond to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or surgery.

Instead of trying his luck with these orthodox cancer protocols, Vernon simply ordered cesium chloride.

Unfortunately, the cesium never arrived. However, Vernon did not give up on raising his pH levels and making his body too alkaline for cancer cells to spread. While searching for alternatives, he happened on a cheap and commonly available alkalizing source: baking soda.

This common household cooking item is commonly added to bubbly drinks and also used as an antacid to neutralize stomach acid in the treatment of ulcer and acid reflux.

The remedy Vernon found called for mixing baking soda with maple syrup. With no maple syrup on hand, he mixed the baking soda with molasses.

Vernon Johnston fought his cancer with ingredients taken from his kitchen. His efforts and success are documented on his blog aptly described as "dance with cancer".

What is Baking Soda?

Baking soda is a white crystalline solid that appears as fine powder. It is also called cooking soda, bread soda and bicarbonate of soda. Its chemical name is sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate.

Baking soda is different from washing soda (sodium carbonate) although they share the same slightly salty and alkaline taste.

This widely used soda is commonly dissolved in mineral water and used as a leavening agent in baking. It works as a leavening agent by neutralizing the acidic components of batter. The neutralization releases carbon dioxide and leads to the “raising” or expansion of baked foods.

Baking soda has also been used to soften vegetable and to tenderize meat.

As a household chemical, baking soda is used as a cleaning agent. It is included in toothpastes for similar reasons where it serves as an antiseptic, acid-neutralizer, whitening agent and plaque-removing agent as well as a cleaning agent.

Other common personal hygiene products in which baking soda can be found include deodorants and shampoos.
To make the baking soda natural cancer remedy at home, you need maple syrup, molasses or honey to go along with the baking soda.

In Dr. Sircus’ book, he documented how one patient used baking soda and blackstrap molasses to fight the prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. On the first day, the patient mixed 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of molasses in a cup of water.

He took this for another 3 days after which his saliva pH read 7.0 and his urine pH read 7.5.

Encouraged by these results, the patient took the solution 2 times on day 5 instead of once daily. And from day 6 â€" 10, he took 2 teaspoons each of baking soda and molasses twice daily.

By the 10th day, the patient’s pH had risen to 8.5 and the only side effects experienced were headaches and night sweat (similar to cesium therapy).

The next day, the patient had a bone scan and too other medical tests. His results showed that his PSA (prostate-specific antigen, the protein used to determine the severity of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer) level was down from 22.3 at the point of diagnosis to 0.1.

Another baking soda formula recommends mixing 90 teaspoons of maple syrup with 30 teaspoons of baking soda.

To do this, the maple syrup must be heated to become less viscous. Then the baking syrup is added and stirred for 5 minutes until it is fully dissolved.

This preparation should provide about 10-day worth of the baking soda remedy. 5 â€" 7 teaspoons per day is the recommended dose for cancer patients.

Care should be taken when using the baking soda remedy to treat cancer. This is because sustaining a high pH level can itself cause metabolic alkalosis and electrolyte imbalance. These can result in edema and also affect the heart and blood pressure.

Ideally, you should consult a doctor before adopting the baking soda solution. An oncologist with a knowledge of this cure would be most helpful.

By Hauke Goos and Ralf Hoppe -der Spiegel online

On April 24, a textile factory collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing over 1,100. A government investigator has presented his results to SPIEGEL. They tell a harrowing story of a disaster caused by greed and the pressures of globalization.

n the last few years, he has investigated more than 40 cases of factories that either collapsed or burnt down. But none of those accidents approached the scale of Rana Plaza, the biggest industrial accident in the country's history. The 493-page report Khandaker wrote contains witness statements, photos and structural engineering calculations. It will probably remain under lock and key. An investigative report on the textile industry has never been published in Bangladesh, he says.
Khandaker goes into the next room and returns with a stack of paper, the summary. He eats a berry from the bowl and carefully spits the seed onto the saucer. "Time pressure, lots of money, a lack of scruples and greed -- everything came together on that day," he says.
Normally, the approval of six government agencies is required to build a factory in Bangladesh: the Ministry of Industries, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the office of fire safety and civil protection, the office of the environment, the Board of Investment, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Rana circumvented these requirements by declaring the plaza as an office and retail building. He used his father's contacts and donated money to the campaign of a member of parliament to get it approved. That's how the Bangladeshi system works. A country growing as quickly as Bangladesh can't spend too much time on regulations. Once a building has been erected and is filled with machines and people working to bring money into the country, no one asks about permits.

A 19-year-old Filipino-Swiss scored victories in rounds 9 and 10 of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship over the weekend, becoming the first Pinoy to win such a race.

Marlon Stockinger raced for Atech GP and secured a lights-to-flag victory at the North Yorkshire’s Croft circuit on Saturday’s round 9, according to Renault Sport.co.UK.

A formula race starts with the opening of several lights and ends with the waving of a flag. Thus, the term lights-to-flag.

Stockinger’s first-ever podium was followed by a second-place finish during Sunday’s round 10, which was broadcast live over UK’s ITV4.

“Round nine was really nerve-wracking but I’m thrilled to finally secure a win especially given I’ve had a third place, a second place in the Winter Series, and now my first win,” said Stockinger.

He said he hopes to ride on his momentum going into the next rounds of the race.

“This weekend has been a huge confidence boost for me though and I’m looking forward to the next rounds,” he said.

Stockinger, son of Swiss racing enthusiast and businessman Tom Stockinger, grew up in the Philippines until he was 17, after which he left for Europe to pursue his racing career. His mother is a Filipina.

 Embarrassed...

A guy asked a girl in a university library: "Do you mind if I sit beside you?”
The girl replied with a loud voice: "I DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!"
All the students in the library started staring at the guy; he was truly embarrassed.
After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the guy's table and said with a laugh
"I study psychology, and I know what a man is thinking. I guess you felt embarrassed, right?”
The guy then responded with a loud voice: “$500 FOR ONE NIGHT? . . . THAT 'S TOO MUCH!”

All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock.

Then guy whispered in her ear: "I study law, and I know how to screw people!"

Now add up the total number of points.

OVER 60 POINTS:   Others see you as someone they should "handle with care."  You're seen as vain, self-centered, and extremely dominant.  Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.

51 TO 60 POINTS:   Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality, a natur al leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones.  They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once, someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure.  They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

41 TO 50 POINTS:   Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting, someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head.  They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding, someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.

31 TO 40 POINTS:  Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical.  They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest.  Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expects the same loyalty in return.  Those who really get to know you, realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.

21 TO 30 POINTS:  Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy.  They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder.  It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.

UNDER 21 POINTS:&nb sp;   People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions and who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist.  Some people think you're boring.  Only those who know you well, know that you aren't.

Now forward this to others, and put your score in the subject box of your email, like this:

General Topic / How to detect a propaganda?
January 23, 2013, 03:50:08 PM
This famous pamphlet was composed in the 1930s to help people analyze the particular rhetorical devices that constitute "propaganda" in the hopes that such knowledge would help us hold politicians more accountable for the kinds of manipulations they tried to get away with.

Powerful propaganda was in the air back then. Dangerous nationalists like Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin, waiting there in the wings…. Would people in those societies have been as vulnerable, as gullible as they were if they'd had this kind of knowledge about how they were being manipulated? The writers of this pamphlet were attempting to inform their American readers about propaganda, in part, to protect them from being vulnerable to its effects.

A few questions we want to ask and answer based on this article are:

How does the Institute for Propaganda Analysis define propaganda?
What are the propaganda tools to look out for?

We can answer those two questions up there fairly easily.

What is propaganda?
Propaganda, as defined by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA), means deliberately designing messages so that people will be influenced to think or act in predetermined ways, in ways the propagandist prefers. That is, it's an instrument of persuasion meant to get people to form rash judgments. Why rash? Because they're not based on rational thought or inquiry, just bald feeling.

In this broad sense, you can see how advertising is "propagandistic," but properly understood, "propaganda" is a term usually reserved for those who wield it, or want to wield it, in an organized way for political purposes. Despite their similarities advertising and propaganda are different. There's a qualitative difference between using persuasion to get you to purchase a pair of jeans and using persuasion to get you to elect a person to office, to give that person enormous power. The difference is that the success or failure of the persuasion advertisers use will affect individuals, whereas political persuasion potentially affects millions. So, while some of the techniques are the same, the effects are not.

What are the propaganda tools to be on the lookout for?
The propaganda tools discussed in the IPA pamphlet are "NAME CALLING," "GLITTERING GENERALITIES," "TRANSFER," "TESTIMONIAL," "PLAIN FOLKS," "CARD STACKING," and "BAND WAGON." It would help to give some of these new names, I think.

Name Calling
Say something nasty about someone. Use broad strokes and never fill them in. Get your audience rushing to judgment without providing any evidence. "He's a pen-pushing bureaucrat." "He's a liberal." (That didn't used to be a bad name!) "He's a terrorist." (Ah, we don't want to admit it, but that's name calling. One person's terrorist is another person's "freedom fighter.")

Glittering Generalities
Use virtue words. Use the same broad strokes, and never fill them in. Get your audience, once again, to rush to judgment without examining any evidence. "He's a good American." "We're for family values." Glittering generalities are feel-good words that will make people feel warm and fuzzy without making them think too hard, or think at all.

Transfer
To make something more palatable, set it next to something we like a lot. Get us to feel good about it by the power of association. "Transfer" that good feeling we have about this thing or idea to that thing (or idea). Get your audience to completely confuse the two as much as possible. (The flag = "America's New War." Several TV news stations have helped us associate our patriotism, our need to bond together, our team spirit, our rallying around the flag, with feeling okay about our "new war."

Testimonial
Display somebody whom a lot of people respect or idolize and ask them to take that person's word for it, whatever it is. ("Mayor Guilliani says he is definitely going to vote for so and so, so what do you think of that?")

Plain Folks
Go out and be among the people, doing and saying the things that ordinary people do. Talk like them. Dress like them. Eat like them. Laugh like them. Get the people to believe you are just like "one of them." Visit the factory and press some flesh with the machine operators if you really want their votes (and all the other working class folks out there watching on the evening news.)

Card Stacking
"Stack the cards" or "arrange the deck" of facts against the truth. Use under-emphasis and over-emphasis. Suppress facts that don't support your side. Dodge questions, avoid issues, evade facts. Even lie if you have to. Use censorship, distortion. Omit things. Offer false testimony. Create a diversion, raising new issues when you want something forgotten. Draw a red herring across the trail to keep nosy inquisitors off your trail. Make the unreal appear real and the real appear unreal. Encourage half-truth to masquerade as the whole truth. Use as much sham, hypocrisy, and effrontery as you can get away with! (Ask the American people and the rest of the global community to believe Iraq was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. without presenting credible evidence.)

The Band Wagon
Encourage everyone to conform, to follow the crowd, to join in the parade, to get that fellow feeling of belonging to the group. Hey, don't you know "everybody's doing it," so what's your problem? Get with the program! Hop on! Flatter and pander and play on people's prejudices, biases, convictions and ideals-work their emotions until they join. (Don't you support our war in Iraq yet? What do you mean you think this was the wrong war? That's not what all the rest of us good people think!)

Bulgarian dancers named "Kukeri" hold torches as they perform a ritual dance during the Kukeri Carnival in the village of Batanovci, western Bulgaria, on Sunday. The Kukeri Carnival is a festival of brightly colored wooden masks and costumes that marks the coming of spring. Participants make their own colorful masks, covered with beads, ribbons and woolen tassels. The heavy swaying of the main mummer is meant to represent wheat heavy with grain, and the bells tied around the waist are intended to drive away evil spirits and sickness.

A MAN  OWNED & DROVE THE SAME CAR FOR 82  YEARS

They  certainly don't make them like that anymore.

This man owned  & drove the same car for 82 Years.

Can you imagine even  having the same car for 82 years!

"How Long Have You Owned  a Car?"

Mr. Allen Swift ( Springfield , MA.) received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly-P1 Roadster from his father, brand new  - as a graduation gift in 1928.

He drove it up until his  death last year.....at the age of 102.

He was the oldest  living owner of a car that was purchased new.

Just thought  you'd like to see it.

It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death.

It has 1,070,000 miles on it, still  runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in  perfect cosmetic condition. (82 years). That's approximately  13,048 miles per year (1087 per  month)...

1,070,000  that's miles - not kilometers!!

That's Best British engineering of a bygone era.

Since most conservative Mennonite and Amish churches sing only acapella
hymns in their churches, it is not surprising to find that there are
numerous Mennonite and Amish acappella choirs, quartets, and family singing
groups. Most of these groups sing in simple four-part harmony.

Altar of Praise Chorale is a mixed acappella group, comprised of some of the
best male and female singers in the conservative Anabaptist world.

Members of the group come from various Anabaptist backgrounds: Beachy Amish,
Mennonite, and Charity Christian Fellowship.
