Press Release - Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and Department of National Defense (DND) Officer-in-Charge Secretary Jose Faustino Jr. led the turnover of the 16 parcels of land owned previously by the Cebu Province during a ceremony on Monday, October 3, 2022, at the Capitol Social Hall.
Faustino, Garcia and AFP Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro signed a Deed of Conveyance while Vice Governor Junjun Davide and Visayas Command chief, Lt. Gen. Robert Dauz served as witnesses.
“I have been working for this, not for my own personal benefit. I have been working, and working, and working, that we recover these lots and the entire 80 hectares because this is what the Cebuanos deserve,” Gov. Garcia said.
Vice Gov. Davide said the recovery of these previously owned Cebu Province's properties went through a long process.
“With nothing but the best interests of the province in mind, the governor’s relentless efforts to recover ownership and possession of these properties will have an enormous impact on the well-being of the province and the Cebuanos,” Vice Gov. Davide said.
“We are grateful to the new leadership of the defense department for honoring the agreement and recognizing the importance of reconveying these parcels of land to the Province of Cebu,” he added.
In 1959, the Provincial Government donated lots to the AFP to be used specifically for military purposes. In the deed of donation, a stipulation directed the recipient to return the parcels of land to the Province if the lots would be utilized other than for military purposes.
Also present during the historic event were Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Vice Mayor Raymond Garcia, members of the Provincial Board,
mayors from towns under the province, and officials of the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces of the Philippines. KC/photos by Sven Alega
