MILITARY, POLICE FORCES LAUNCH RESCUE OPS FOR MASBATE VILLAGE OFFICIALS

Military-police operations are underway to rescue two more persons earlier abducted by suspected communist New People’s Army insurgents in the hinterlands of Masbate.

A Barangay Chairman, who was among those abducted in the initial incident has managed to escape and is now in a safe location.

PNP Chief, Police General Debold M Sinas has instructed Police Regional Office 5 Director for Bicol Region, Police Brigadier General Bartolome Bustamante, to provide security to the barangay official who was himself a former CPP-NPA rebel but has since surrendered to government.

Sinas said, Punong Barangay Aniano Capinig of Barangay Cabas-an, Aroroy, Masbate has already made contact with his family informing them of his escape from their CPP-NPA captors.

Still unaccounted for and the subject of rescue operations by police and military troops in the island province are Barangay Kagawad Victorino Piorado, and Barangay Tanod Arnel Refanan, also of Barngay Cabas-an.

Sinas said the three barangay officials were kidnapped at gunpoint by some 30 CPP-NPA terrorists led by a certain “Cris” and “Star”, who arrived in the village at 4:00AM.

"This is a crime, and under no circumstances shall the PNP allow any violations of law and atrocities by the CPP-NPA who threaten the lives of ordinary and innocent people who could not defend themselves. With support and cooperation from the community, the police commits itself to bring the victims alive back to their families", Sinas added.

The three were tied-up and brought by their captors to a hilly portion of Barangay Cabas-an while threatening to kill one hostage every two hours.

Philippine Army troops from the 2nd Infantry Battalion and the Provincial Mobile Force Company are leading the rescue operations.
