Optional Early Retirement Bill needed now more than ever 

OPTIONAL EARLY RETIREMENT CAN HELP MORE SENIORS PREFER TO STAY HOME DURING COVID-19 QUARANTINE

I steadfastly support the passage of House Bill 5509 which is now with the Senate.

I believe Optional Early Retirement can be one of the general community quarantine solutions to make people older than age 56 stay at home.

Early retirees from government service can become work at home entrepreneurs like many of the younger generation who set up new businesses or go into online business.

Several thousands of early retirees is several thousands of people we need not worry about catching the coronavirus because they are safely retired government employees.

House Bill 5509 went through proper study and consultations, including the GSIS. Contrary to some pundits' views, this does not upset the pension system. In fact, the net effect on Filipino families and the national economy is a big plus because early retirees avail of their pension sooner, can spend more quality time with family, or embark on a new career or business.

HB 5509 also has good prospects in the Senate because there are four bills in that chamber about lowering the optional retirement age of government workers. Labor champion Senator Joel Villanueva, one of its proponents in the Senate, vows support in its passage.

I believe the time for HB 5509 to become law is now as a COVID-19 quarantine measure. (END)
