REP. RODOLFO “OMPONG” ORDANES
SENIOR CITIZEN Party-list
Chair, Committee on Senior Citizens - 09177292437
Vaccinate the others who live with the seniors in the same residence
PANG-UNAWA AT PASENSIYA ANG KAILANGAN SA PAGKUMBINSI SA MGA SENIORS NA MAGPABAKUNA
“With the Delta variant ravaging through our communities and households, I fear for the health and lives of the millions of seniors who have not yet received their COVID vaccines,” Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes Jr of Senior Party-list said, noting only 1 of 4 seniors (25%) are vaccinated.
Ordanes said the national authorities “must support barangay officials with tools and incentives needed to convince the caregivers of seniors and the seniors themselves to get vaccinated.”
“If they want to protect the seniors with vaccines, convince and inoculate the caregivers and household too because vaccinating the whole household creates the real tiny bubbles of protection, not the mere vaccination of one or two in the home,” Ordanes asserted.
The fully-vaccinated Senior Citizen Party-list lawmaker also explained that “many of the seniors are not techies so those online registration methods are not accessible to most indigent seniors because they are poor and cannot afford internet access at home.”
“The much better ways are mobile street level vaccination, text-only methods of pre-registration, and giving incentives like rice, medicines, and cash,” Ordanes said.
“Persuading the elderly also entails mother tongue communication and some counseling. English is not the mother tongue of many seniors. Please use the local regional languages especially out there in the provinces and among the seniors who migrated to the urban areas from their hometowns,” Ordanes suggested.
Ordanes added, “the counseling part considers the human aspects of getting old. Counseling the elderly entails understanding of the health, fears, and frailties. Many seniors are concerned about adverse effects or side effects more than the benefits of the vaccines and medicines. Minor aches and pains of most people are not minor to seniors aware of their mortality.”
(END)
