Rodel delo Satur, nicknamed Mr. Corn by his law school classmates, has been volunteering with CharityPhilippines.org since 2014. He can very well identify with the NGO’s beneficiaries.
“I was born into a low-income family,” he shares. “When I was in college, my pocket money was only enough for pamasahe. I would usually bring lunch or snacks from home. If I had extra money, I would buy buttered corn kernels, which made me feel full throughout that day as corn is rather hard to digest. My classmates nicknamed me Mr. Corn, since they would often see me eating buttered corn kernels, only P10 at that time, instead of a decent meal at the canteen.”
CharityPhilippines.org leads a meaningful Christmas activity that allows ordinary people to help hundreds of needy persons even when they do not have the financial means to do so. The NGO provides volunteers from accredited companies with food items to give their chosen needy communities. All the volunteers have to donate is time and energy repacking and distributing the food items.
Rodel’s volunteer work with CharityPhilippines.org over the years has involved identifying possible beneficiaries for the foundation's gift giving project, preparing and monitoring the packing of grocery items, overseeing release of these to other volunteers, and actual distribution.
“I am reminded every time I volunteer that life is not easy, but with some help, we can make it at least bearable for others. I’ve also realized that happiness is contagious, that you cannot help but be happy whenever you see other people happy,” Rodel adds. He hopes to volunteer as a basic human rights educator for the young, women, and the underprivileged in the future.
