DATU PIANG COPS WHO FOUGHT BIFF TO RECEIVE COMMENDATION

A recommendation for awards to 22 members of the Datu Piang Municipal Police Station has been submitted to the PNP National Headquarters for assessment.

The Special Promotion, Awards and Decorations Board (SPADB) will review all available reports and witness’ accounts of the circumstances surrounding the successful defense of the town of Datu Piang by members of the local police force led by Police Captain Israel Bayaona last December 3.

PNP Chief, Police General Debold M Sinas announced these developments in-the-field while on a command visit at the Police Regional Office of Bangamoro Autonomous Region in Camp General Salipada K Pendatun in Parang, Maguindanao on Tuesday, his second regional sortie to the Bangsamoro region this month. He last flew to Cotabato on December 7 at the height of pursuit and manhunt operations against the BIFF attackers.       

He said, upon recommendation of PRO-BAR Regional Director, Police Brig Gen Samuel Rodriguez, the Board is looking into the highly commendable actions by personnel of the Datu Piang Municipal Police Station when they successfully defended the town and quelled a violent rampage by some 50 armed men belonging to a faction of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (BIFF) movement.

During his first visit immediate following the incident, the Chief PNP noted the well-implemented Community Integrated Defense Plan (CIDP) that thwarted the attack and prevented an escalation of hostilities.

Bayaona and his men held their ground and defended protected the town’s catholic church and school,” Sinas said.

After being momentarily relieved from post to undergo stress debriefing, Bayaona has since reassumed post as Chief of Police.
