THE “BUILD, BUILD, BUILD” PROMISE IS HAPPENING IN LEYTE PROVINCE!
Press Release - In his most recent Facebook post, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Sec. Art Tugade keenly shares his update on the various transport infrastructure projects in the province of Leyte, which are geared towards providing enhanced mobility and connectivity, as well as long-term comfort and convenience to our kababayans.
“In Leyte, we have already completed 14 airport projects, while there are 5 that are in progress.6
“The Maasin Airport located in Panan-awan village in Maasin, Southern Leyte was inaugurated on July 2, 2018. The airport, which is the only airport serving Southern Leyte, bridges the province of Leyte and Metro Manila.
“On the other hand, after being ruined by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, and a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in 2017, the fully developed Ormoc Airport, was rehabilitated and upgraded, and was inaugurated on July 5, 2019.
“The passenger terminal building of the Ormoc, Airport has been expanded from only 150 sq. meters to 1,350 sq. meters, which allowed it to accomodate more passengers in Western Leyte.
“Considered as the gateway to the Eastern Visayas Region, and one of the busiest airports in the country, the Tacloban Airport is likewise being given a face lift. Its control tower and new Passenger Terminal Building are ongoing construction, with its completion slated in 2022.
“Apart from airport projects, we have also completed a number of seaport projects in Leyte.
“14 social tourism port projects and 4 commercial port projects have been completed in the province, while 2 social tourism port projects and 2 commercial port projects are still ongoing.
“The Port of Ormoc has completed its port expansion project and the construction of its Port Operations Building (POB) on November 20, 2020. It is intended for inauguration within the year.
“On June 25, 2018, Phase 1 of the port development project in the Port of Limasawa, Southern Leyte was completed. It included the construction of a passenger terminal building, back-up area, and causeway. Phase 2 was completed in October 2019.
“With the completion of the development project at the Port of Limasawa, the capacity of the port was increased from only 120 passengers to 1,184 passengers per day.
“It can now also accommodate RORO (cargo ships), which helped enhance the swift travel of essential goods and passengers.
“Apart from these, we have also completed various port projects in Leyte, such as at the Albuera Port (July 11, 2017); the Villaba Municipal Port (June 27, 2019); the Bato Port (March 1, 2020); and the Merida Port (March 1, 2020)," Sec. Tugade remarked.
