Former Las Piñas City congresswoman Cynthi a Villar, wife of the out-going senator Manny Villar made no pretensions for her interest to run for senate in next year’s elections under his husband’s Nacionalista Party.
She was in the city yesterday then proceeded to
Calape town as an invited guest speaker of the BOHECO 1 General Annual Assembly.
The lady Villar, who owns Vista Land, the biggest homebuilder in the Philippines today, bluntly answered the question on political dynasty saying that she wants to be elected on her competence and performance and not to be under the shadow of her popular husband.
“Senator Manny Villar will be completing his six-year term (the second 6-year term) by June 30, next year. If I am elected, he will be no longer in the Senate, so I don’t think such issue of dynasty applies to us,†Cynthia Villar said during a brief press conference held at the Emerald Room, Metro Center Hotel, this city.
The former Las Piñas congresswoman served three terms and is a staunch advocate for environment conservation and preservation. She and Senator Villar launched the Las Piñas-Zapote River System Rehabilitation Program in 2002 which won awards and recognition in best practices, accorded by UN Human Settlements Program and the OIKOS Foundation of Switzerland. The program also won the Green Apple Award for Environment Best Practices in London, UK.
When asked on her stand on the controversial Health Reproductive (RH) Bill, she said, such law does not answer the pressing problems of this nation.
“India, China had billions in population but they are progressing. The problem of this country is not on the number of people but on how to address poverty, the real obstacle to progress,†Cynthia Villar said.
She revealed she’s pro-life and member of the Catholic charismatic renewal group Couples for Christ. She also shared her views on the issue of ‘transvestism’ related with the recent controversy troubling the Miss Universe pageant recently.
“The Philippines as a Catholic nation is conservative and I think dealing on the issue is not for us to face this time. Let’s take on other pressing problems, like poverty. When we can rise above such level, then by that time we can perhaps afford to be complacent and tackle these issues,†she said.
Cynthia Villar has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from New York University. She served as chairperson of the Congressional Spouses Foundation from 1998 to 2000. She is currently the managing director of the Villar Foundation.
She considers family her most cherished treasure in her well raised children; sons Paolo and Mark, both graduates of Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, while only daughter Camille is a Business Management graduate of Ateneo de Manila University.
