In the United States, I am pro-death penalty, but in the Philippines, I cant trust the judicial system. There is a 100% probability that an innocent person will be sent to the death row, while the guilty will be freely roaming.

Death penalty? Hmm. Reminds me of this joke...

There were three explorers who where walking through the
forest of Africa, when suddenly they were caught by
tribesmen.

After being held captive for a week, the male chief comes up
to the first explorer and says, "You have two choices to get
out of here," "death or five minutes of umba momba." The
explorer thinks that umba momba has to be better than death,
so he says, "I'll take umba momba." The chief smiles at him,
and then starts having sex with him for five minutes. After
boning him, he lets the explorer go.

Then he proceeds to the next explorer. "You have two
choices: death or 30 minutes of umba momba." The explorer,
not wanting to die, picks half an hour of umba momba. The
chief then has sex with him for 30 minutes, then lets him go.

Finally, he says to the last explorer, "Two choices: death
or 1 hour of umba momba." The explorer thinks that this is
absurd. After all, he was so rough on the other to while
having sex with them that he gave them bruises. He thought
that he might as well die.

"I want to die." he says. Then the chief says, "Okay. You
will die."

"By umba momba."

I'm split on this.  I am for leniency on offenders who may have been driven into committing a crime because of poverty but I have no compassion for the criminally insane or for hardened criminals.

I'm against death penalty because there are innocents who are convicted because of poverty and unjust decision.

In the Philippines this will definitely happen, hoodlums in robes since time immorial played more than God. They dictated the lives of people in trial. In the US, I have faith in the judicial system.

Yes.  I believe that's quite clear in my post.

Yes.  I believe that's quite clear in my post.

Come to think of it, a hardened criminal can conceivably be criminally insane. At the same time, one can be criminally insane (or declared as such) without being a hardened criminal.

When I say "the criminally insane" I'm not talking about kleptomaniacs and the like.  I'm talking about the criminally insane who inflict inhuman and unimaginable cruelty on their victims and who take their lives because they feel the compulsive need to do it.  People like Charles Manson and David Berkowitz.  How is society ever safe from them?

When I say "hardened criminals" I'm not talking about mere recidivism or repeat offenders.  I'm talking about people who have shown no compunction in taking lives in committing their crimes that fall nothing short of heinous.  In prison, where they become larger than life, they perpetuate a system that makes even more hardened criminals.

Death Penalty is not and will never be the answer to the increasing criminality rate. Records and statistics tell us that when it was implemented years back crime rate did increase. There should be a genuine moral ad political reform i our country. Politicians are known for lobbying their pets for appointment as judges and our Filipino sense of gratitude surely became a factor in making decisions. Life imprisonment is also expensive to our government's coffer. Our system is not rehabilitative knowing how crowdy and dirty our jails are. Its going back to the Lord. Secondly, the government need to implement a genuine socio-economic programs that would make use of our rich manpower resources!

Death penalty would be idealistic in the Philippines, but considering the corruption in the legal and political systems, we risk sentencing the innocent man to death and pardoning the actual murderer. We should have something as solid and firm as the legal-judicial system in Singapore. Death penalty should be re-instituted , but the country should also actively reform the prison system.

Ah, OK. Yes, right, those who "feel the compulsive need" and those who "have shown no compunction" are difficult to tell apart indeed...

For me Death Penalty is not the solution. Prisons is like rehabilation.. everyone made a sin but maybe the prisoners done much sinful sin on others. prisoners can change, everyone can change. so give them a chance to change there lives.
