DOH issues warning on tyhoid fever
Bacolod City (31 August 2005) -- The National Epidemiology Center (NEC) of the Department of Health (DOH), warns the public against typhoid fever, a food and water-borne disease that usually occurs during the rainy season.

Dr. Eric Tayag, OIC, National Epidemiology Center said, they have recorded around 45 cases of typhoid fever in the National Capital Region alone from January to August of this year.

Signs and symptoms of typhoid fever include sustained high fever, headache, weakness, and loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal discomfort.

The following are the preventive measures against typhoid fever: boil water for drinking and cooking; cook food thoroughly and cover them later from flies; wash all vegetables and fruits well especially those that are to be eaten raw; do not buy street foods; wash hand thoroughly with soap and water especially after using the toilet, before food preparation and before eating; and keep surroundings clean to eliminate all possible breeding areas of flies.

"The public is advised to take note of the signs and symptoms of typhoid fever and to bring suspected cases to the nearest health center or hospital to avoid complications", Tayag added. (MB/ PIA)
