A complete computer set donated to 114 public schools is worth P170,000 each? Scandalous!
These were the questions Boholanos asked when an advertisement was published at a local paper using documents from the Department of Education that 114 public schools showed an extremely overpriced computers totaling P19,380,000.
Even computer store owners shook their heads in disbelief when confronted with the advertisement which showed an overly priced computers that are not in fact loaded with all the expensive perks. According to some owners, even the latest models of computers accessorized with the latest gadgets do not fetch such scandalous price.
It may be recalled that during the last 2007 elections, bar topnotcher Atty. Victor dela Serna raised the issue of computer overpricing allegedly perpetrated by Cong. Edgar Chatto. However, Atty. Victor dela Serna could not produce the documents that would prove his accusation. Things have changed after certain DepED employees, concerned over such anomalous transactions provided documents that the computers given by Cong. Chatto to the 114 stores were indeed priced at scandalous levels.
The camp of Cong. Chatto did not given any plausible answers to the issue except to say that these are rehashed issues. Even during the 2007 elections Cong. chatto did not also give any reply to this particular issue which was raised by Atty. de la Serna.
Up to this time Cong. Chatto could not provide the public with the documents that would satisfy their thirst for the truth on this scandalous issue. Text messages demand an answer to this wasteful misuse of government funds.
Their silence to directly answer the issue of graft relevant to the purchase of highly priced computers only emboldens the public to suspect that indeed Cong. Chatto may have enriched himself during his term as congressman for the first district of Bohol.
How many more projects of this type has the Congressman given? How much is the cost of the cellphones given to barangay captains? Was this also overpriced?
These and many questions started to crop up in the public's mind amid the indifference by Cong. Chatto to satisfactorily allay fears of graft over this transaction.
