The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) lacks facilities to conduct more credible blood testing on blood donors.
This was admitted by newly appointed OIC Administrator Nenita B. Briones during her first appearance before the NPC Bohol board of directors last Thursday.
She said that what the local PNRC has is only the IMX machine which can determine whether a blood is contaminated with Hepa B while the traditional “rapid test†can detect blood with HIV, Hepa C and syphilis.
Aside from this, the local PNRC lacks the other equipment to perform other blood testing activities.
Gov. Erico B. Aumentado, chair of the PNRC board of directors presented Briones during the board meeting which discussed among others the urgency to upgrade the blood testing capacity of the local PNRC.
Aumentado will personally bring to Red Cross chairman Sen. Richard Gordon the formal request to acquire RC-4 Refrigerated Centerfuge (with four blood bag capacity), refurbished Axym Abbot – for serological testing of blood diseases, automated weighing scale and tube sealer.
Once these facilities will be available, the local PNRC will now able to check human immuno virus 1/2, Hepa C, Hepa B and rapid plasma reagent.
Briones told the PNRC board that a general assembly is slated to be convened on June 5.
Briones assumed as the new Red Cross administrator vice Rita Requeron.
The new PNRC Bohol administrator who hails from Duero town has been PNRC chapter administrator in Cotabato City for 17 years. She has been in the Red Cross for 33 years.
She is a recipient of several awards and recognitions, the latest of which was given by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. - by the Bohol Chronicle
