Sogod: Cebu's Eco-Tourism Gem and Model of Good Governance
Sogod, a 4th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines, has been recognized as the lone recipient of the most coveted Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) in four straight years. The SGLG is an award given by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to local government units that excel in various areas such as financial administration, disaster preparedness, social protection, health services, environmental management and tourism.
Sogod Mayor Lissa Marie Durano-Streegan attributed the town's success to its people-centered approach and its strong partnership with various stakeholders. "We always put our people first. We listen to their needs and aspirations. We also work closely with our barangays, civil society organizations, private sector and other government agencies to deliver quality services and programs," she said.
One of the town's flagship programs is its eco-tourism development that showcases its natural attractions and cultural heritage. Sogod is home to pristine white sand beaches, picturesque landscapes, scrumptious delicacies and hospitable people. Some of its popular destinations include Binaliw Spring, Bagatayam Falls, Esoy Hot Spring, Calumboyan Public Beach and Paseo de Porferio Campsite.
Sogod also boasts of its rich history and culture that dates back to the Spanish colonial era. The town was one of the first places where Christianity was introduced in northern Cebu by Jesuit missionaries in 1596¹. It also played a role in the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American War¹. The town's heritage can be seen in its old churches, ancestral houses and historical landmarks.
With its brand of good local governance and eco-tourism development, Sogod has proven itself as a model for other towns to emulate. It has also earned the admiration and respect of its visitors who are drawn by its beauty and charm.
