The local government of Caloocan City declared Sunday that the city is now "100 percent smoke-free" as it implemented Republic Act 9211, otherwise known as the Tobacco Regulation Act.
To implement the program, the Caloocan City government will hold a summit conference aimed at informing the public or the city's residents how serious the government is in implementing the law, RA 9211.
Mayor Enrico Echiverri said that the summit conference will be held at the Caloocan City Hall on Sept. 7, 2010.
Among those invited to attend the conference include city council, barangay heads, department heads, school officials and members of the local tobacco control council.
The adverse effects of smoking to one’s health, and the different aspects of the local government’s anti-smoking program, will be tackled in the conference.
Echiverri expects that they would be able to reach different sectors during the summit wherein they would be able to tell them about the bad effects of the tobacco to smokers and non-smokers as well.
Aside from the mayor, speakers during the summit conference include; Dr. Raquel So-Sayo of the city health department; Atty. Rowena Daroy Morales of the UP College of Law; and other representatives from different organizations.
At the same time, the local chief executive is optimistic that the ongoing implementation of R.A. 9211 would help the city government in its campaign to soften the effect of global warming, and the Metro Manila Development Authority's campaign in keeping the air clean.
