MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday said it will withdraw its resolution on extended liquor ban after the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against it.
The extended liquor ban under Comelec Resolution 9582 would have started Thursday. With the TRO, however, the liquor ban will take effect from 12:01 a.m. of Sunday to 11:59 p.m. of Monday, Election Day.
"We are withdrawing our previous resolution. We will not file any comment anymore. We will accept na two days na lang," Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said in an ambush interview.
The poll body was required by the SC to file its comment on the TRO not later than 5 p.m. Thursday.
Brillantes said it was the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) who sought an extended liquor ban, originally proposed to last for two months.
"I'm not (disappointed) because at least I can still drink for three days," the poll body chief added. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
