The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has said there is no law prohibiting candidates from posting campaign posters or large stickers on public utility buses (PUBs).
According to Comelec Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer, there is no provision in the Fair Elections Act that bars political aspirants to post advertisement in the said public transport.
“There’s nothing in our laws that prescribes the particular sizes that should be allowed,†he said.
However, Republic Act No. 9006 specifies that written or printed materials should not exceed 8 1/2 by 14 inches, as well as posters with an area not exceeding 2 by 3 feet.
Ferrer noted that bus advertisements are placed in private properties, thus making them legal.
“If a private individual wants to make use of his private property the way he wants to, provided that it’s not contrary to the law, that should be allowed,†he said.
It has been noted that administration party presidential candidate Gilbert “Gibo†Teodoro Jr. and re-electionist Senator Juan Ponce Enriles are among the national candidates that have advertisements on PUBs.
Normally, the ads are placed at the back side of the vehicles.- PNA
