Bohol to host top-level ASEAN meeting in 2017

The Province of Bohol is flexing its muscle as it will act as host to some of the top-level meetings among nation members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the leadership of which in 2017 has been assumed by the Philippines.

The ASEAN consists of 10 member countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Bohol Gov. Edgar Chatto on Friday welcomed a high-level group from the ASEAN National Organizing Council (NOC) who already selected the venues of the meetings and arranged security details, among others.

This was after Chatto joined in the launching of the Philippine Chairmanship of the ASEAN 2017 led by Pres. Rodrigo Duterte at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City last Sunday.

The event carried the theme “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” with all the member countries of the ASEAN sending participants to the launching.

Invited to the gathering, Chatto assured also the National Organizing Committee of the ASEAN 50 Philippines 2017 of a red carpet reception for the delegates to the Bohol-hosted ministerial and senior official meetings.

The ASEAN 50 has been so coined as the ASEAN coincidentally celebrates this year the golden or 50th anniversary of its founding in 1967.

Chatto met in Davao City with the ASEAN-NOC chairman himself, Exec. Sec. Salvador Medialdia.

Amb. Marciano Paynor, secretary-general of the ASEAN-NOC, is expected to visit Bohol for necessary coordination before Bohol will begin hosting some of the major ASEAN meetings in the third week of April.

Chatto was joined in Davao City by Panglao Mayor Leonila Montero and Liza Flores, the governor’s executive assistant for special projects and designated ASEAN hosting focal person for Bohol.
All hosted by the Philippines, to include Bohol and few other select provincial hosts, there will be 118 ASEAN meetings this year, including 15 ministerial meetings, 30 senior officials’ meetings and 70 technical working group meetings.

These are all integral to the two-part ASEAN Summit in April and November, during which will be the Leaders’ Meeting.
The ASEAN-NOC team sent here on Friday was led by Usec. Anthony Alcantara, deputy director general for operations, and Usec. Araceli Villanueva, deputy director general for tourism and special events services.

Before they discussed with Chatto many important preparation details, the group briefly joined the governor at his regular weekly forum with the Bohol media at the Governor’s Mansion on Friday.
The ASEAN hosting is expected to magnify Bohol tourism while chancing the province to showcase its resources and potentials which can increase the interest of the investors not just from the Asia-Pacific region.

Chatto acknowledged Villanueva, both happy to have been reconnected since their partnership when the governor, then a congressman, principally authored in the Lower House the National Tourism Act of 2009.

The law has been regarded as the “bible of Philippine tourism.”
Also on Friday, Bohol distinguished itself as the first province in the country to have launched 2017 as the International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development pursuant to the United Nations General Assembly declaration.

The launching highlighted the opening of the province’s annual Ube Festival, which Department of Tourism Reg’l. Dir. Catalino Chan committed to mark red as one of the major events in the national tourism calendar.

Chatto said Bohol’s hosting participation augurs well for the province’s localization of the ASEAN’s impact on six thematic priorities.

These core themes include people-oriented and –centered ASEAN; peace and stability in the region, maritime security and cooperation, inclusive and innovation-driven growth; ASEAN resiliency; and ASEAN as a model of regionalism, a global player.

Chatto said Bohol is obsessed to contribute to the success of the Philippine hosting of the ASEAN Summit.

The ASEAN is committed to intensifying community building through enhanced regional cooperation and integration.

ASEAN TOURISM CAMPAIGN
The Philippine Department of Tourism is upbeat on continuous efforts of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote the region as a single and unified travel destination.

DOT Secretary Wanda Teo, during the recent 20th ASEAN Tourism Forum in Singapore held Jan. 19 to 21, 2017 requested for the ministers’ assistance in promoting the mentioned events to their business and outbound travelers.

"Pursuant to the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP), we would like to emphasize the importance of ASEAN working assiduously to ensure that a sustainable and inclusive growth path for tourism will be achieved,” Teo said.

“We don’t have to look far to find what we are looking for,” she added citing figures that show that 115 million projected international arrivals can be attributed to the ASEAN countries in 2016.

Teo also showed a brief video presentation of DOT’s major projects and invited her fellow ministers to very important tourism-related events that are slated in the Philippines this year.

These events include the staging of the 65th miss Universe on 30 January, the 3rd Madrid Fusion Manila on 6-8 April, and the 6th UNWTO International Conference on Tourism Statistics.
The Philippines is also host of the ASEAN @50 celebration.

Latest data on visitor arrivals show that for November 2016, visitors from these nine countries combined, account for only 7.9 percent of the total tourist arrivals in the Philippines.

Based on the same data, among the ASEAN countries, Singapore delivered the most number of arrivals for the Philippines with 161,194 visitor arrivals followed by Malaysia (128, 077), Thailand (44, 372), Indonesia (40, 651), Vietnam (31, 555) , Brunei (7,378) Myanmar (6,832), Cambodia (3, 278) Laos (1, 112). John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
