Problem on Pinoy sexuality, not with the RH bill- priest
“THE problem is not with reproductive health bill but with our sexuality.â€
Thus says Fr. Precy Bacani, a priest member of the religious group of the Missionaries for Jesus.
Presenting a rare angle at how a man of the cloth sees the issue on reproductive health, Fr. Bacani, awed the crowd of mostly conservative Boholanos with a more progressive viewing of the issue that is still considered by many as taboo here.
Fr. Bacani, one of the speakers on the aspect of faith in the issue on reproductive health stirred the crowd over the role of culture in one’s value system.
He also went on to agree with other speakers who presented different angles while elaborating on the topic and homed in on the real absence of a clear government population control policy as a problem that would bind people to poverty.
Discussing an often-overlooked angle of theology in the light of human experience, Fr. Bacani awed the attendees of the “Puso, Puson, Politika at Pananampalataya: a forum on sexuality, reproductive health, politics and religion at the People’s Mansion Thursday afternoon.
With a progressive rereading of the encyclicals upon which the Catholic Church anchors its absolute stand against artificial birth control methods, Fr. Bacani poked on the social context molding the Filipino psyche as that which bars people from considering inner self and not actualizing the full meaning of sexuality.
In a paternal society reinforced by stereotypes of women as subjects and commodities, there is a belief that women just accept decisions imposed upon them, Bacani explained.
On matters of sexuality, which he defined as enjoying the fullness of life, the question as to whether an outside force or ones personal conscience prevails would seemingly be difficult, he summed.
The forum, organized by the Institute for International Education-Leadership Development program for Mobilizing for Reproductive Health Action Information Network with Catholics for Repreductive Health, is aimed at helping catholics make an informed decision in choosing leaders open to supporting a clear-cut population control policy, revealed Emilia Roslinda, forum convenor.
Aside from Bacani, speakers during the forum includes Rene Penales (MAKAMASA president), UP Economics Professor Ernesto Pernia and trustee of the forum for Family Planning and Development and Board member Cesar Tomas Lopez of the SP Committee on Health. (PIA-Bohol)
