MALACANANG defended Saturday President Benigno Aquino III's move to always appeal for the life of a convicted Filipino drug courier in other countries.

In an interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that whenever the Chief Executive makes an appeal, he was just seeking for the commutation of the death sentence.

"We are not saying to overturn the verdict, we're not saying that they were not guilty because we respect their system, the judicial process of the other countries," she said.

"What we're asking is for their life to be spared and for them to serve the rest of the life on their sentence because here, we don't have death penalty," Valte explained.

Some of the administration allies in Congress have urged the Palace to adopt hands-off policy whenever there is a Filipino who is on a death row abroad due to drug trafficking.

The lawmakers have asked Malacanang not to intercede anymore whenever there is already a final verdict. The government should just provide legal assistance during the trial stage, the legislators said.

Aquino recently sent a letter of appeal to Chinese President Xi Jinping to spare the life of a 35-year-old Filipina drug mule. But despite the appeal, China executed the Filipino national who was caught in possession of 6.198 kilos of heroin and was sentenced to death. (SDR/Sunnex)

Hmm, sounds like a plagiarized opinion to me...
