Aguirre says DOJ focusing on cases of heinous crime victims
MANILA, August 4 (PNA) -- Justice Secretary Vitaliano N. Aguirre II on Thursday assured the public that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is focusing on the cases of victims of heinous crimes.
He made the assurance as the department secured the conviction of two persons for murder and six others for homicide, in separate rulings issued by various courts.
The Oslob, Cebu Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 62 found Ricardo Baylosis and Anastacio Estrada guilty of murder and sentenced each to life imprisonment without eligibility for parole.
The court also ordered each of the convict to pay the heirs of their victim PHP155,000 in damages and civil indemnity.
The two conspired to kill Julian Ygona, who was on his way home and was drunk.
The Toledo City, Cebu RTC Branch 29, meanwhile, found Sherlita Apalola guilty of homicide and sentenced her to a jail term of eight years and one day to 14 years, eight months and one day and to pay the family of the victim, Jesus Lingaolingao, PHP150,000 in civil indemnity and moral damages.
According to witnesses, Apalola was drinking liquor and playing a card game with the victim and several others when the players had an argument over a missing bet at the center of the table.
The victim wanted to stop the game but Apalola, having lost most of the bet, refused.
This led her to stab the victim in the abdomen, resulting in his death.
The Talibon, Bohol RTC Branch 52 also sentenced Erwin Bonda to a prison term of six years and one day to 12 years and one day and to pay PHP50,000 as death indemnity.
Bonda was found guilty of homicide for bringing Rodulfo Dahuya Jr., who was sleeping in his house, to a grassland and stabbed him to death.
The Loay, Bohol RTC Branch 50, on the other hand, found Avelino Cagulangan guilty of homicide and sentenced him to a prison term of 12 years to 17 years and four months and to pay the heirs of the victim, Gallardo Gambuta, PHP120,000 in civil indemnity and damages.
The victim was lying in his house when Cagulangan entered and stabbed him to death.
The Tagbilaran City, Bohol RTC Branch 1 also found Carlos Pateno guilty of homicide and gave him a prison term of eight years and one day to 14 years, eight months and one day and to pay the family of the victim, Giuseppe Paredes, PHP125,000 in civil indemnity and damages.
Pateno stabbed the victim to death after he refused a glass of liquor offered by the victim.
Carlos’ co-accused, Amancio Pateno, who hit the victim with a bottle, was sent to jail for 20 days for slight physical injuries.
The Tagum City, Davao del Norte RTC Branch 31, meanwhile, sentenced Bobong Sahay to jail for 10 years and one day to 17 years and four months for homicide and to pay the family of the victim, Lito Mataas, PHP75,000 in civil indemnity and damages.
The Carmen, Bohol RTC Branch 51 sentenced Luciano Muring to prison for eight years and one day to 17 years and four months and to pay the heirs of the victim PHP80,000 in civil indemnity and damages. (PNA)
