A fresh group of
peacekeepers from Malaysia quietly arrived here Monday to take over from their colleagues whose tour of duty as ceasefire observers in the government-Moro rebel peace negotiations ended last month.
The new Malaysian peace observers is headed by Major General Dato Mahdi Bin Yusof.
He will assume as new chief of the Malaysian-led International Monitoring Team.
The IMT has been observing the implementation of the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front ceasefire agreement.
Aside from Malaysia police and soldiers that make thee bulk of peace observers, IMT is also composed of representatives from Libya, Brunei and non-uniformed representatives from Japan, Norway and European Union.
Yusof replaced Major Gen. Datuk Baharom Bin Hamzah, whose stint as chief of IMT ended on February 28.
The GPH and MILF peace panels bilaterally give the mandate of the IMT. - PNA
