MANILA, Philippines – A supporter of incumbent Bilar, Bohol mayor Norman Palacio was wounded in a shootout on Sunday, May 12, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
The initial police investigation places the shootout in Barangay Yanaya, 10 kilometers from the town proper of Bilar, at around 10:50 a.m.
The shootout was allegedly politically motivated and occurred between the supporters of the incumbent mayor and a group of a retired army officer supporting Ester Corazon Galbreath.
Galbreath is challenging Palacio's reelection bid for mayor in Bilar.
The victim, identified as Gener Idulsa according to an initial report submitted to the Bohol Provincial Police Office, is a staunch supporter of Palacio.
According to the same report, the police arrested former Army Captain Elmer Namocat. Namocat is believed to be a supporter of Galbreath.
Six municipalities are currently in the election watchlist areas (EWAS) in Bohol, namely, Trinidad, Carmen, Candijay, Buenavista, Danao and Tagbilaran. - Rappler.com
