Cebu Provincial Board Member Agnes Magpale took her oath Tuesday as the new vice governor of Cebu at the Legislative Session Hall in Danao City, some 40 kilometers north of this city.
For the first time in Cebu’s history, women hold the two top positions in the Provincial Government.
Magpale was aware, though, of the possibility she may only occupy the post for two or three months in case the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will favor businessman Glenn Soco’s election protest against the late Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr.
â€I have made a decision. I can’t hold hostage the interest of the Cebuanos for my own self-interest. So whether I sit there for two months, or three months, I have made up my mind and I just did,†she said.
She took her oath first before Danao Vice Mayor Ramon “Nito†Durano III whom she considered her political mentor, then before Judge Maria Josefa Ramos of the Municipal Trial Court in Danao City.
Magpale said Ramos was the first attorney of the Court of Appeals (CA) hired by her late husband, former executive justice of the CA in Cebu, Arsenio Magpale.
â€If the position is for me, then it’s for me,†she told reporters prior to her oathtaking.
She said she assumed the position as vice governor as required by the law after Sanchez succumbed to lung cancer.
Department of Interior and Local Government 7 Director Pedro Noval said Magpale has now relinquished her post as PB member.
But in case Soco will win the election protest, she can go back to the PB if she will be recommended by her party, Barug Alang sa Kauswagan ug Demokrasya (Bakud).
