New General Manager of Mactan Airport
« on: October 25, 2010, 12:01:04 AM »
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia has welcomed the appointment of Cebu City Planning and Development Office Chief Nigel Paul Villarete as the new Mactan airport general manager.

Garcia, a member of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) board, said she never questioned Villarete.

Villarete was appointed as general manager of MCIAA in a special meeting held in Manila last Oct. 20, while Garcia was in China for an official trip.

”Let’s not put a spin to whatever I said. I only called for the right process to be followed just like what the people (Cebuanos) expected me to do,” Garcia said.

She said she never said anything against Villarete.

She also never mentioned a specific name or applicant whom she endorsed.

”I don’t want my action to be affected or influenced because of a bias for a particular person. My bias is for Cebu because that is what we deserve, only the best. That is what I continue to advocate, nothing but the best,” Garcia said.

She said all she asked was for the new general manager to be qualified since they are dealing with a multi-billion-peso facility.

Garcia said even if she was not around in the special election of the new general manager of MCIAA, she respected the collective decision of the members of the board who were present that day.

She said, however, that outgoing airport manager Danilo Francia is a tough act to follow.

It is going to be a challenge for the next general manager to sustain what has been achieved.

Garcia said Francia is an admirable manager.

It was seen in the increase in international and chartered flights and over P1 billion in revenues during his term.

Of the four applicants, Villarete was endorsed by President Benigno Aquino lll, who wrote the MCIAA board a letter last Sept. 15 expressing his “desire” to have Villarete selected. (PNA)
