Inspired by the election of Sen. Barack Obama as President of the
United States, Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay today accepted the challenge of various people’s organization for him to run for president in 2010.
Binay, who turned 66 years old today, said the "voters' revolution" will install a government that will restore the people's dignity, give priority to health care and education, look after the elderly, and promote transparency and accountability in government.
"This is our revolt -– a voters' revolution, a grand, all-or-nothing plan to rescue our orphaned Republic at sa araw na ito, kaarawan ko pa man din, muli kong iniaalay at ipinauubaya ang aking sarili sa ating mga kababayan, at tinatanggap ang inyong hamon na pamunuan ko ang ating himagsikan tungo sa isang maunlad at iginagalang na
Pilipinas," he said on Tuesday in front of more than 2,000 supporters from the city and the provinces carrying streamers like "Obama of the Philippines" and "Jojo Binay for President" that gathered at 7 a.m. for a Thanksgiving Mass at the Makati City Hall quadrangle to mark his birthday.
Before speaking, Binay received from leaders of various people's organizations from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao resolutions signed by their members, urging the opposition leader to run for president in 2010.
In accepting the resolutions, Binay said he has never rejected any challenge in his life, citing his appointment in February 1986 as acting mayor of Makati by former President Aquino.
The mayor's acceptance speech ended with the supporters releasing yellow and blue balloons with the print "Makati ngayon, Pilipinas bukasâ€
Binay is also the president of the United Opposition (UNO), National President of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) and National President of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. (PNA)
