Senator Manuel “Mar Roxas II is not desperate for the support of the prominent Ampatuan clan for his vice presidential bid, a Liberal Party (LP) official said on Tuesday.
“This is pure foolishness and sheer falsehood. Senator Roxas is not desperate to seek the support of the Ampatuan cheating machinery in Maguindanao,†LP campaign manager Florencio “Butch†Abad said in a statement.
“Mar will never be in cahoots with the perpetuators of the Maguindanao Massacre, especially since he and Senator Noynoy Aquino led the Liberal Party in condemning the gruesome massacre and their call for justice for the 57 victims,†he said.
Abad was reacting to a newspaper report quoting a military source that Roxas was among those who visited Andal Ampatuan Sr. to get his support.
Ampatuan Sr. is one of the accused in the November 2009 massacre of 57 people, including 32 journalists in Maguindanao province.
The mention of Roxas’ name in the report could only be part of a “mind-conditioning scheme mapped out and perpetrated by other vice presidential candidates who have been lagging in pre-election voters preference surveys conducted by independent polling firms,†Abad said.
Roxas has been leading in various vice presidential surveys.
