Manila News: Zero Violence in Manila During Election Period
« on: October 21, 2010, 06:11:40 PM »
The Manila Police District (MPD) has recorded “zero” election-related violence since the start of the election period for Monday's barangay elections.

This developed as over 300 candidates for the Oct. 25 barangay polls in Manila signed a covenant on Thursday afternoon to help ensure peaceful and orderly elections.

Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla, MPD officer-in-charge, said he hopes to maintain the "zero" election- related violence record until the end of the election period.

He asked for the cooperation of candidates and city residents to ensure peaceful and orderly elections on Monday.

The MPD director said the strict implementation of the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as well as the increased number of policemen for visibility helped attain the zero election-related violence.

He also said the checkpoint and chokepoint in major thoroughfares in the city also helped to thwart crimes.

The official added that they also recorded zero violators of the gun ban in Manila.

More than 300 candidates from Districts 5 and 6 of Manila were invited to the MPD headquarters in Ermita to sign a covenant for honest and peaceful elections on Monday. (PNA)
