Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he wants the
Malacanang sa Sugbu, former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s official residence in Cebu, to be turned over to the Cebu City Government.
Some groups, among them, the Bureau of Customs Port of Cebu, want to use the building after President Benigno S. Aquino III declared he doesn’t want to use it.
Rama earlier asked the President to turn over the building to the City Government so the latter can make it part of the city’s cultural heritage and landmarks.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC), which used to occupy the building, has also appealed to President Aquino, through Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, to allow them to occupy the building after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the city last February.
The earthquake caused structural damage to the building they are occupying in the port area.
But Rama instead offered a lot in the South Road Properties (SRP) for the BOC to construct their new building.
This earned criticisms from Rep. Tomas Osmena (Cebu City, south district).
Osmena, who is at odds with the mayor, said the BOC needs a building to transfer, not a lot in the SRP.
He said Rama must consider the safety of BOC employees and the people transacting business at the BOC.
â€If the building is defective, why do you risk the lives of the people when they think they are not safe in their present location?†Osmena said.
Osmena said the SRP has no building and the reclaimed property is too far for the public.
Rama said it is normal for the congressman to oppose his idea.
