Press Release. 19-year-old young Ormocana Ivy Claire Dinoy of Brgy. Naungan, who is a part of the Women’s Epee Team that won a bronze medal in a fencing competition at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, was presented by Mayor Richard I. Gomez to the public and fellow public servants during the flag-raising ceremony today, May 23, 2022, at the grounds of the New Ormoc City Hall.
According to Mayor Gomez, the Philippine Fencing Team gathered 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals.
Fencing Coaches Venerando “Benny” Garcia and Avelino Victorino, Jr. were also presented and thanked by Mayor Gomez for training our fencing athletes well.
In an interview, Dinoy expressed gratitude to Mayor Gomez, who is also the President of the Philippine Fencing Association and Vice President of the Philippine Olympic Committee, saying, “Salamat sa opportunity and blessings nga imo gihatag kanamo mga athlete, kung dili tungod nimo wala ko karun dire sa posisyon nga Philippine Team para sa fencing; dako gyud kaayu ni akoang kaugmaon. Salamat kaayo sobra.”
In addition, during the same event, Coach Benny told LGU-Ormoc employees that he saw in Mayor Gomez his genuine love for sports.
Mayor Gomez, meanwhile, said that he is happy that Ormocanons are receptive to LGU-Ormoc’s sports program and that sports were given priority by our local government saying that sports create in our people discipline and determination.
He also lauded members of the 15th Sangguniang Panlungsod for allowing a big budget for the sports programs.
Finally, he was also grateful to CongW. Lucy Torres-Gomez for the acquisition of funds for several LGU buildings, which included a fencing building that will soon rise at the facade of the City’s Tennis Court.
