Aquino: I have no psychological records
By Ira Pedrasa, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - President Benigno Aquino III insisted he does not have any psychological records that would put to question his mental fitness.

On the sidelines of the 33rd founding anniversary of the Aurora province, he said the dare of Chief Justice Renato Corona last week is just a rehash of accusations leveled against him during the May 2010 elections.

“Sa psych records…atake sa atin noong kampanya ‘yan—to produce, open. So, balikan natin…sana sa lahat sa atin na nag-a-ano nito, siguro kung sino man ang sasabihan nang ganoon, hindi maganda,” he said.

He also said he will not shut up in commenting about the trial, saying it is his duty to talk about the public’s sentiments.

“A democracy is the majority deciding for everybody and you cannot decide properly if there is no discourse within the contending sides in any issue. So to keep quiet about the whole thing is, I think, wrong. Time to time, I reserve my right to be able to say what I believe should be said to the people,” he said.

Also in attendance during the founding anniversary were Rep. Sonny Angara, a member of the prosecution panel, and Senator Edgardo Angara, a judge in the trial.

In a statement issued to the media on Friday, Corona challenged Aquino to produce his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth, as well as his bank accounts and psychological records.

“Mayroon po tayong obligasyon na ipakita sa taong-bayan na maayos ang ating pag-iisip,” Corona said in the statement.

He told Aquino: “Ang tungkulin po ninyo ay hanapan ng lunas ang lumalalang kahirapan at pagkagutom ng marami nating mamamayan, walang humpay na pagtaas ng presyo ng gasoline…at mabagal na tugon sa mga nasalanta ng kalamidad…”

i just wish the president could be more statesmanlike... tua na bitaw sa impeachment court; let those senator-judges decide corona's fate.  hilom na lang unta si p-noy kay maklaro hinoon ug samot nga vengeful ra siya.  how dare him say that his is the public's sentiment.  his personal animosities are not necessarily the public's.

bilib ra ba unta ko ani niya as a sentimental symbol of our democracy.  he should not waste his popularity ratings by being mataray.  it looks like we're getting more mediocre by the day because of his style hinoon.

Bishops urge Aquino, Corona to behave

By Jocelyn R. Uy
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:57 pm | Monday, February 20th, 2012

MANILA, Philippines—With the word war between the two highest leaders of the country far from being over, some Catholic bishops on Monday joined calls for President Aquino and Chief Justice Renato Corona to observe proper decorum and exercise some prudence in their words and actions towards each other.

“We advise them to be more discreet in what they say [and] to be more prudent in what they tell the people,” according to Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso over the Church-run Radio Veritas.

Concerned over the nonstop fighting between the President and the Chief Justice, who is facing an impeachment trial, the prelate on Monday said they must respect each other’s dignity and show some level of maturity since they were leaders being looked up to by the people.

“[They should be] more mature in relating with one another since they are leaders … they are talking as persons with dignity and education,” said Medroso.  “Every word that they say will always have the influence on the people,” he added.

In a phone interview with reporters, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said he hoped that Mr. Aquino and Corona would be reminded that they should be setting a good example to the public.

“We hope they realize that they are public servants and they always have the public’s good in mind and heart [and] we appeal that … they put aside their personal issues because it’s bad for the country,” said Iñiguez, also chair of the Catholic bishops’ Public Affairs Committee.

Over the weekend, the President said he was not going to be silent about the issue and that he would continue to voice out his thoughts on Corona “if needed” after senator-judges called on the two leaders to stop the word war and just allow the impeachment trial to run its course.

The President also stated that his verbal attacks were not directed at Corona but at the system which the latter was representing.

Over the last few days as the impeachment trial still tackled Article 2 of the impeachment complaint, which included exposing the impeached Chief Justice’s dollar accounts, both Mr. Aquino and Corona had been using public speeches as venues to attack each other.

Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz said Mr. Aquino may have all the right to voice out his opinions but his position as the highest leader of the country do not permit him to do so.

“He can really speak his mind if he was like us common Tom, Dick and Harry but he is not since he is the President,” Cruz told reporters.  “Proper decorum and propriety dictates that he should exhibit some sort of statesmanship and prudence,” said Cruz.

The mere fact that Corona’s impeachment trial was already taking place, Mr. Aquino’s verbal attacks on the chief justice was already “out of place,” he added.
