The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) said that there is a need to appoint a new Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner.
In a statement Thursday, PPCRV Chairperson Henrietta de Villa said that with the death of Commissioner Romeo Brawner, "it is more needed to press for the appointment of three more officials to complete the seven-man commissioners." “We are moved even more to press for the appointment of new Comelec commissioners now totaling three. This will gravely affects the forthcoming ARMM polls especially at this crucial time of the implementation of its poll automation,†she said.
On Thursday, Brawner succumbed to a heart attack while he was at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.
With his death, the Comelec now has only four officials led by Chairman Jose Melo and Commissioners Rene Sarmiento, Nicodemo Ferrer and Moslemen Macarambon.
De Villa said they are saddened by the untimely death of Brawner, whom she described as a man of courage, integrity and determination.
“Commissioner Brawner, in our individual and collective experience of the Comelec during the 2007 National and Local elections, was a pillar of integrity, competence and courage. His decisions and judgments manifested a command of legal jurisprudence that was never devoid of humanitarian concern. What the PPCRV especially appreciates was his accessibility and openness to help clarify election-related confusion,†she said.
