Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes expressed gratitude to President Benigno S.Aquino III for approving his request in appointing a lady commissioner.
“Apparently narinig nila at babae nga ang inappoint. I can always say na I’ve known her already. Her reputation is walang problema sa integrity so malaki ang maitutulong nya dito. We welcome her,â€â€ Brillantes said.
On Tuesday, Malacanang announced the appointment of former Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca as the poll body's new commissioner, who will replace Augusto Lagman, who was not reappointed to the post.
She will be serving until Feb. 2, 2018.
Brillantes said Padaca be an asset and they will have a referee, since the en banc is dominated by men.
“Hindi ko pa alam paano siya makakatulong.She’s a former politician, former governor, babae ‘yun ang pinakamalaking asset sa amin. Ngayon meron na mag referee sa amin,†he said.
Brillantes noted that Padaca, who is not a lawyer, is not a disadvantage.
“Well, si Gus Lagman hindi lawyer so hindi naman deficiency ‘yun. He was an it,†he added.
