President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her party racked up a dinner bill of close to P1 million at a ritzy New York restaurant during her recent trip to the United States, according to an online news report.

And the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), which referred to the story of the New York Post that was posted August 7 on its website, is demanding an explanation.

Richard Johnson wrote the brief report in the Page Six â€œEat and Drinkâ€ section of the NY Post online edition.

It read: â€œThe economic downturn hasnâ€™t persuaded everyone to pinch pennies. Philippines President Maria Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was at Le Cirque the other night with a large entourage enjoying the good life, even though the former comptroller of her countryâ€™s armed services, Carlos Garcia, was found guilty earlier this year of perjury and two of his sons were arrested in the US on bulk cash-smuggling charges. Macapagal-Arroyo ordered several bottles of very expensive wine, pushing the dinner tab up to $20,000.â€

That amount is nothing to complain about considering what America allows or has given to the Philippines.

It is about time that Philippines learns to scratch the back of one who is always scratching it's back.

How is life in the land of the great Filipinos who are not natural born there? You can work, you can petition your own family members there, and you can reap the same services and benefits that I can as born citizen from there.

Here in Philippines foreigners have nothing to show for the help we have provided to this country. We have to pay for everything and wait for the slow processes of the country those of you are no longer in Philippines and instead you and enjoying what America has been doing for you and other countries then i guess no need to complain about the amount the Philippines president has spent in USA.

To me after being here for so long just does not make any sense now does it when foreigners even on permanent resident visa's just do not have the same bennefits as you do over there with your American Visa'?

Sometimes giving aid and money to this place is like watching a game of roulette or watching the money spin down the toilet.

This is a reasonable amount, considering it involves the Symbol of State. Pardon my defense of Her Excellency The President, but there are leaders of governments that spend double if not triple that amount in just leisure activities.

Being the President does come with its ups and downs.

When dealing with politics and business, food, is always the level ground. There are businessmen that spend triple that amount just to secure a financial transaction.

yes, this is true. wala man gud sila libreha ug kaon in obama pagvisit nila sa whitehouse maong nanglibre ang usa ka congressman sa quezon. didto sila mangaon sa Bobby Van's Steakhouse sa 15th Street NW, Washington DC. pero included na ani ang tips, taxes and service charge. imagine around 65 people sila tanan. sakto ra sad na siguro nga bill ilang nabayran. as what i said, dollar ang kwarta sa US maong dollar pud ang ibayad. mura ra gud na ug P15,000 pesos diri sa pinas.

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had spent P2.7 billion for her foreign trips since 2001, or P1.6 billion more than the P1.1 billion budgeted for the period, a lawmaker said Friday, citing what he said were records from the Commission on Audit.

In an interview with radio dzMM, Bukidnon Representative Teofisto Guingona said Ms Arroyo spent P722 million for foreign trips in 2008 alone, or nearly three times the P244 million allocation for the year.

Citing COA records, Guingona also said Ms Arroyo exceeded her P800 million contingent fund budget in 2008 by P120 million in alleged violation of government spending rules.
