At least for Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, she will have to look elsewhere in her bid to become Speaker because Bohol ’s first district is not going for her.
Asked to answer a question on whether they will vote for Speaker GMA in case they win, both Councilor Oscar Glovasa and ex-Gov. Rene Relampagos said no.
The two disclosed their stand during a forum hosted by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Holy Name University gym Friday.
Glovasa and Relampagos are the front-runners in the first district congressional race which also features Tagbilaran Councilor Edgar Kapirig. Kapirig was not present at the forum.
Speaking to reporters after the forum, Glovasa said that Pres. Arroyo has already served in the highest position of the land.
“She should give others a chance,†the 1969 bar topnotcher explained.
Glovasa, who answered “no†four times during the forum, said that this is not yet even about the President’s performance in her nine years in office.
Arroyo is the country’s longest-tenured president in the post-Marcos years.
In spite of her length of service, Arroyo is suffering from a negative acceptability rating among Filipinos.
According to Glovasa, the country needs new leaders who enjoy the trust and confidence of the people.
“It is difficult to demand sacrifices from the people if they do not trust the people at the helm,†he added.
The speaker is fourth in the order of succession behind the president, vice-president and senate president.
Glovasa’s negative reply was expected, but Relampagos was a surprise.
Running under the Nationalist People’s Coalition and a guest candidate of the Nacionalista Party, Glovasa is aligned with Team Dan Lim in Tagbilaran whose titular head, Mayor Dan Lim, is supporting ex-Pres. Erap Estrada.
Relampagos, on the other hand, is a guest candidate of the Lakas-Kampi and was expected to support Pres. Arroyo.
His adoption has been one of the issues raised by a Lakas faction which resented his choice over that of Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas.
Reacting to Relampagos’ refusal to support GMA as speaker, Salinas said this only proves that Lakas made a mistake in adopting an outsider.
