PIA Davao City: The Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held Thursday (March 5) the site activation in 5 key areas and done simultaneously with Quezon City as the main site of the project launching.
Besides Davao City, other areas with sites activated with the Free Wi-Fi are Albay, Isabela, Lanao del Sur, and Palawan.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, represented by City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, commended the movers of the said project citing that provision of such service would address economic, social, and educational challenges experienced especially in remote communities.
The ceremonial activation was led by DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan and Undersecretary Elisio M. Rio Jr. Meanwhile, the DICT XI with the residents of Barangay Matina Biao, Tugbok simultaneously gathered at the barangay hall covered court to do the provincial activation.
Barangay Captain Carlo Malaki II thanked the government offices concerned especially the Davao City LGU for choosing the barangay as one of the project recipients.
“ We will ensure that the technology will be taken with care and used responsibly. Since the free wifi coverage could only cater within 30 meters from its base, the barangay will meet and come up with a policy that would ensure that this service will benefit as many people possible”, said Malaki.
The DICT-UNDP Free Wi-Fi For All Project committed to continuously contribute to the achievement of the five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by deploying 6,000 free Wi-Fi sites and enhancing the citizen’s capability to use ICT.
