Eight years after he was ousted on corruption charges, former President
Joseph Estrada on Tuesday said he was almost sure of running for the country’s highest post in next year’s elections.
“It seems impossible now that the opposition will field only one presidential candidate.
There is a 99.9-percent chance that I will be running for president,†Estrada said at a press conference here that was attended by opposition leaders and prospective candidates.
In Antique province on Monday, Estrada, chair of the United Opposition (UNO), said he would announce his decision in late September or early October.
He said 2010 would be “an opposition year.â€
Estrada has said that he will run for president if the opposition failed to unite and field a common presidential candidate.
Since his release from detention in October 2007, he has already visited 64 of the 81 provinces in the country.
Estrada was ousted in a people power uprising dubbed “Edsa II†in 2001. He was later charged with and convicted of plunder but was pardoned by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
