MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said it is high time that the remains of former President Ferdinand Marcos be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

In an interview with reporters, Enrile said â€œhe has not been tried of any crime although there are claims about certain behaviors and venalities in his government, but that is to be judged by the people and the courts in a proper case. I think in terms of his entitlement to become a resident of the Libingan ng mga Bayani, it should not be questioned.â€

The issue was raised anew after an Ilocos resident supposedly texted Senator Francis Escudero on the matter.

The texter supposedly told Escudero that if former Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes could be buried there, so too should Marcos.

Reyes, who shot himself last week, had been dragged into allegations of corruption in the military.

Marcosâ€™s body remains in a refrigerated crypt in the family mausoleum in Batac, Ilocos Norte.

Enrile, Marcosâ€™s defense chief, said the dictator had been a veteran of the World War II, and even went through the Death March.

â€œHe got sick in Capas, Tarlac where he was confined. Then he joined the guerilla organization where he fought again. He was a member of the United States Army in Northern Luzon. He became a congressman, Senator of the Republic, Senate President. He became President of the country, and he did well as a President,â€ he said.

Enrile noted that there is no law that would stop the burial of Marcos at the Libingan in Fort Bonifacio.

He said it is the Department of National Defense which should implement the law.

This means that the decision now lies in the hands of President Benigno â€œNoynoyâ€ Aquino, whose family experienced the oppression of the Marcos regime.

Asked if the revival of the topic could be offensive, he said: â€œYou see, that is a separate issue all together. I think it will take a big portion of one's lifetime to heal the wound that created that division.â€

MalacaÃ±ang remains mum on the matter.

In a press conference at the Palace, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said: â€œWell, we donâ€™t knowâ€”this is news to us.... We will have to consult with theâ€”I have to talk to the President about it. I have to inform the President about this development. So, let me hold-off any comments on that.â€

The Department of National Defense (DND) has distanced itself from the proposed burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, which remains a thorny issue more than two decades after the former state leaderâ€™s death.

â€œThe DND will just follow the guidance of MalacaÃ±ang," DND spokesman Eduardo Batac said Thursday at a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo.

Marcos was a former military officer and recipient of the highest military decoration for gallantry and bravery in combat, but many sectors are opposing plans to bury him at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

â€œWhile there are parties which are advocating for the accommodation of the late President Marcosâ€™ burial in Libingan ng mga Bayani, there are also people who are objecting especially the victims of the Marcos dictatorship," Batac noted.

Batac said all military officers and enlisted personnel are qualified to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Marcos, president from 1965 until he was ousted in 1986, died while on exile in Hawaii in 1989. His remains were brought and preserved at his hometown in Virac, Ilocos Norte.

Among those who are calling for his burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani are his son Sen. Ferdinand â€œBongbong" Marcos Jr., and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who served as Defense minister during the Marcos regime.

In February 1986, however, Enrile joined forces with then AFP vice chief of staff Lt. Gen. Fidel Ramos in turning against the Marcos administration. The EDSA uprising then resulted in the ouster of Marcos and the assumption to power of then civilian Corazon Aquino.

Meanwhile, Batac announced that Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin is planning to develop a regional Libingan ng mga Bayani to accommodate enlisted personnel, especially those who cannot afford burial at private cemeteries.

â€œThe move right now, and this came from the secretary himself, is to develop regional Libingan ng mga Bayani, especially for enlisted personnel who pass away. These people cannot afford, for example, burial at the cemeteries," said Batac. - KBK/RSJ, GMA News

Ah yes, he was charged for killing Julio Nalundasan after the former defeated Mariano Marcos in a local legislative election.

He (Marcos) was actually given the death sentence, had it not for the Marcoses appealing to the Courta Suprema , which eventually lead to the acquittal of said charges, history would have been totally different...

I will acquiesce to the fact that it was impressive how Marcos graduated Cum Laude from U.P College of Law, despite being incarcerated at the time. He may have been corrupt, but he was , indeed, a brilliant politician. Over 92 of the Republic Acts that he authored are still in use even to this day.

I think Enrile knows better than anybody else in government. Which is why Enrile said; â€œhe [Marcos] has not been tried of any crime although there are claims about certain behaviors and venalities in his government, but that is to be judged by the people and the courts in a proper case. I think in terms of his entitlement to become a resident of the Libingan ng mga Bayani, it should not be questioned.â€

He [Enrile] became the trusted lieutenant of Marcos during Martial Law. I believe Marcos was not his political enemy but others who were involved in the power struggle inside the government of Marcos. Enrile was a part of the struggle.

The people as a fence sitters are always controlled by the media and whatever the media wants us to believe we readily devour it hook, line and sinker. But not me... which is why in any political forum my opinion will come out different. I can create my own opinion. The media is not much of an influence to me especially when it comes to the issue with regards to Marcos and Erap.

The issue that "marcos's own war medals questioned and laughed off as fakes"... is as ridiculous and absurdly preposterous as it is contrary to reason. How can it be fake medals when these medals were awarded to Marcos in 1942 and this is in the heat of WW-II. It was the Americans especially Gen. Wainwright who recommended Marcos to receive the congressional medal of honor of the United States.

The issue about "fake" medals was propagated by the late Gov. Bonifacio Gillego; a staunch critic of Marcos and together with the publisher of We-Forum Joe Burgos he printed the issue of Marcos war medals as "fake". This happened during the Martial Law days. First Gillego went to the WW-II archives in Nebraska asking for the records of Marcos but he was not given access to the records... so he invented his own story of the fake medals. The same day his story saw print in the We-Forum of Joe Burgos he flew to the US to escape.

This is a very sensitive issue and it is impossible (almost) to not step on toes in this issue. Both sides have valid points.

I acquiesce to the fact that Marcos was a corrupt politician, however, there were some good aspects about him. One thing that we all benefit from are the health centers he and Imelda helped create. For example: The Heart Institute of Asia, The Kidney Center, etc.

I acquiesce to the fact that Marcos was a corrupt politician, however, there were some good aspects about him. One thing that we all benefit from are the health centers he and Imelda helped create. For example: The Heart Institute of Asia, The Kidney Center, etc.

This is not a sensitive issue because even a dog is buried in the Libingan. The Libingan is not particularly the intended burial ground for heroes but there are categories who are to be buried there. Marcos has 4 categories to entitle his body's interment at the Libingan. The people are just too emotional of the word "Bayani" attached to Libingan's name. And this is the result of the media's too much demonization of the name of Marcos. Because of the mind control done by the media gullible people tend to believe that Marcos is evil.

The issue attributed to Marcos as a corrupt politician is not new to Philippine political setting. Ever since after the war any president cannot evade himself from the issue of corruption. Look at GMA... she was hailed as like the virgin Mary ascending to heaven when she deposed Erap but look what is going to happen to her now?

One of the changes that Marcos did during the time of Martial Law was the monopoly of our two important cash crop exports... which is sugar and copra. Before Martial Law these products are the source of corruption between the government and the private sector. How did they do it? It's like this... Granex [copra exporter] bought copra from the producers [the common people] and under the noses of corrupt government officials the exporter negotiated the price of copra with an importer in the high seas. Which is why in those days everybody wanted to export and be an exporter because it is easy to smuggle their products.

When he monopolized the exportation of copra and sugar Marcos made it sure that exporters are paying the right amount of taxes. This is the system that makes it easy for the government to look into the management of the export market. In sugar it's only the Nasutra and in the coconut industry the UNICOM. The role of Danding Cojuangco and Benedicto in the monopoly are another issues that we can talk about.

The Samahan ng Ex-detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto, an organization of former political prisoners established under the Marcos dictatorship, today disputed Senate President Juan Ponce Enrileâ€™s claims that former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos â€œfought a war for the country when he was a young manâ€ and thus he should be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani for his contributions as a soldier.

Marie Hilao Enriquez, Chairperson of SELDA and daughter of one of the original named plaintiffs in the historic class suit against Marcos, said the war fought by Marcos known and acknowledged by the Filipino people is â€œhis dirty war against the Filipino people during Martial Law.â€

â€œWe will never forget the horrors that the Filipino people endured during the Martial Law era: numerous human rights violations including summary executions, enforced disappearances, torture, illegal arrests and detention, violation of civil and political rights, hamletting and forced evacuation, among others,â€ Hilao-Enriquez said.

â€œMarcos, his family and his cronies bled the nationâ€™s coffers dry, while majority of the Filipino people live under impoverished conditions. The millions of ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses and their cronies are evident in the recent Campos settlement agreement and the reported share of Eduardo â€˜Dandingâ€™ Cojuangco in San Miguel Corporation,â€ she emphasized.

Military historian Alfred McCoy cited 3,257 extrajudicial killings, 35,000 torture victims, and 70,000 incarcerated during the Marcos period. Human rights groupsâ€™ records show 759 victims involuntary disappearances and an estimated 120,000 victims of arbitrary arrest and detention.

McCoy also discovered various records of the US Army and the US Veteranâ€™s Administration calling Marcosâ€™ claims of heading a guerilla resistance unit during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines as â€œfraudulent, absurd, distorted, exaggerated and contradictory.â€

â€œA fascist dictator is never a hero especially to the thousands of victims of human rights violations under the Marcos regime. He practically killed a generation of statesmen/stateswomen because those who gave up their lives during Martial Law were the countryâ€™s best and brightest youth who would have taken the reins of governance. People Power I is a testament to the Filipino peopleâ€™s rejection of this fallacy. We will continue to oppose proposals for Marcosâ€™s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,â€ she further asserted.

guys, let us not be in the position to judge who is in empyerno. it is God, and God alone who can condemn a man to hell or not.

i used to err in such a way. before, i said that angelo reyes went to hell for committing suicide, but realize that i do not know -- we do not know this. in the end, it is God who dictates the judgment.

so as one who used to judge reyes and accept my error in doing this, i urge you also not to do the same with marcos. in the end, God is merciful and we do not know His judgment....

he is not my idol, i merely admired his intelligence. you should not be saying that he is in hell or impyerno, bro. buwad, because it is not up to us to dictate who goes to hell or not.

i used to be like you before. in my foolish ways i said that angelo reyes went to hell for committing suicide, but i was proven wrong. and it is wrong. the catholic sacraments proved me wrong.

do you believe in the state of purgatory, bro buwad? if you do, then marcos could be in purgatory right now. we should pray for him not condemning him for his sins. kinsa gud gusto mo pa destined sa impyerno...kinsa gusto mo burn for all eternity...?

kahibalo ka that before st. paul became a christian , he was a military leader and a persecutor of christians? he was responsible for the deaths /executions of many christians. but he changed. he had a personal experience with Christ Jesus that changed him, and transformed him from a sinful man to one of the greatest doctors of the Church. And the greatest contributor to the Holy Bible , in terms of new testament writings.

si zachais, was a tax collector and a sinner. yet Jesus Christ ate with him, despite the condemnation of the pharisees and the common people. they even said to themselves, "You see, he goes to eat with a sinner??"

God, in His own wisdom, offers salvation to all. even to the greatest of sinners.

That is up for them to return the money or not, ilaha ra nang conscience ug ma luoy sila sa mga tawo.

But for us, my dear brod. buwad, when we celebrate morning mass, we are reminded by our priest to pray for the holy souls in purgatory.

Ampo lang ta nila bisan maka sala sila kai we do not know when we ourselves will die and will need the prayers of the living.

Imagine, if we but devote a novena to the Blessed Mother, the clemency of the Lord will be invoked.

We do not know that in his death bed, Marcos could have asked penance from a priest and was given absolution of all his sins.
