The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional field office in Iloilo City on Thursday issued a "Guide for Media Practitioners on the Reporting and Coverage of Cases Involving Children".

The media guide is a product of the Special Committee for the Protection of Children and a symposium for social media ethics held November 14 in the city in coordination with area-based standards network Panay I cluster.

Panelists include Claribelle Magno of ABS-CBN, Gerthrode Tan-Mabilog of GMA TV6, Ben Palma Jr of Task Force Internet Gaming and Anti-Pornography and Porferio Fangco of the National Bureau of Investigation Region VI.

The media guidelines focus on the children’s absolute right to privacy and the child’s dignity must be respected at all times. Children have the right to be heard and access to media by children must be encouraged.

The mass media is a partner in the promotion of child rights and the prevention of child delinquency and is encouraged to relay consistent messages through a balanced approach.

DSWD is encouraging all media and media professionals to maintain the highest ethical and professional standards and should promote within the industry the widest possible dissemination of information about the International Convention on the Rights of the child and its implications for the exercise of independent journalism. - PNA
