The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Friday that it will spend P200 million for the immediate renovation of the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila where President-elect Noynoy Aquino will hold his inauguration on June 30.
DPWH Undersecretary Romeo Momo, who is in charge of Luzon operations, said that the amount covers the retrofitting and repainting of the building together with the repair works on the structure's canopy, floor and concrete slab, and girder.
“We would also hang a presidential seal, put red carpet on the floor and set up the monobloc chairs in the grandstand,†said Momo, when asked about DPWH preparations for the oath-taking ceremonies.
He added that the carbon fiber, a material which is seven times stronger than steel, had arrived from abroad and it would be used to strengthen the structure.
As construction crew members made their way through the midday sun at the grandstand last Friday, siblings of the next president checked the ongoing renovation of the structure.
Present were the Aquino sisters namely Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino Abellada, and TV host and actress Kris Aquino. They were joined by the Makati Mayor JunJun Binay Jr. who represented his father Vice President-elect Jejomar Binay during the inspection.
This is the second time Public Works officials and the camp of Aquino inspected the grandstand this week and they will make a final walk through on June 28 or June 29 when its renovation is completed.
During the event, Aquino's youngest sister said that the Madrigal singers would sing the national anthem. Pop singers Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda have been invited to perform at the inaugural.
