End of President GMA?
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:13:02 pm »
By Romy Teruel
Bohol Sunday Post

CBCP Split Over Call for GMA to Resign - news headline. This is far from the decisiveness of the Catholic Church during the reign of Cardinal Sin and President Marcos. Of course times have changed and the conditions were different then as they are now. Marcos was acting with impunity. Mrs. Arroyo is guided by democratic processes.

Marcos' dictatorship reached a point of no option to the people. At that time any call resembling an escape from Marcos would be a rallying point for the people to act in unity. This time the issue is clear but the responsibility is not. Unconscionable Corruption is established but at whose level is not.

Somehow whether there is connection or not, the constitutional provision on the separation of the church and state is more visible in today's developments. During Marcos times, he was the Constitution.

Marcos knew what he was doing and hoped that history would judge him kindly. Mrs. Arroyo knows the people are judging her and she has shown sensitivity to public outcry. She ordered the scrapping of the NBN-ZTE deal as soon as the corruption that enveloped it was exposed to the media. This is not to say that she is not involved in it but her participation has not been established.

Under Marcos the external debt of the country bloated, a situation that continued until the Estrada Presidency. Under Arroyo, GDP grew by 7.3% - unprecedented for many years. The effect is not yet felt by the man on the street but that should be the logical result to include a reduction in the country's external debt.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda who is also economic adviser to Pres. Arroyo referred jokingly to her as may be a bitch but that "she is the luckiest bitch around" because of what she has done to accelerate the growth of our gross domestic product.

Now we understand why the CPCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines) is split over calls for Mrs. Arroyo's resignation. To them and to the many Filipinos, especially those outside of Metro Manila, GMA is still a performing President even if she is a "bad" President.

Bohol and Gov. Erico B. Aumentado will not understand why Pres. Arroyo should step down when the guilt being attributed to her has not been proven with finality. She has been the patroness of Bohols progress. She has done so much for Bohol. All the Mega Projects proposed by Gov. Aumentado had all the support of the President.

Moreover, no President has visited Bohol as many times as Mrs. Arroyo in order to break grounds for new projects or inaugurate completed ones under her administration.
This columnist never really liked Pres. Arroyo after she lied about not running for President in 2004. But if only for what she has done for Bohol and for performing as President, I am willing to live with and support her administration now. I don't see any better option to her at present.

What should all these investigations on the NBN-ZTE deal should do is to separate the political issues from the real issues to be resolved.

What we Filipinos need is a Social Revolution. A change in attitude. Love your country and ask yourself what I can do for my country. Think that we Filipinos are not underdogs, we are brilliant people. Kick off the greed of corruption and show to the world that the masses are ruined by just a few rotten people.

All I can say is NAM "Not Another Mistake". This time, we have to choose our leaders wisely and if someone wants to buy your vote. Kill him!

Mackey! ha ha ha he he he he what about if you see some one accepting the voting monies? kill him also!

You are right about a change of attitude, and the people here need not to teach our kids in a push button way. they should be teaching our kids how to think ahead how to do things with out being told all the time.

They need to encourage and not discourage the young peoples mind and make them so narrow minded it is better to have broader horizons then to see things in a funnel way!

It has to start with the young not just here in the Philippines biuyt all over the world as a whole. people need to get back down to earth and be humble and be perspectictive and give a care about what is going on around them not just whats happening to them personaly.

Macks, there is a need to educate the voters that anybody can "buy" their votes but they still can vote according to what they believe is the RIGHT leaders for this country.  This filthy business of buying votes had driven our country to the drain already.  The politicians had to recoup their costs of buying the votes so they resort to corruption, or they had to pay back those "backers" during the election.  This is becoming a vicious cycle and the masang Pilipino is the ultimate victim.

It has to start with the young not just here in the Philippines biuyt all over the world as a whole. people need to get back down to earth and be humble and be perspectictive and give a care about what is going on around them not just whats happening to them personaly.

There’s a saying in Visaya that goes: “mabanggi kung tul-iron and guwang nga sanga”. That means “Old branch will snap if straightened”, which refers to an old corrupt system. So, why expect hope from this old branch.

Instead, focus in developing the youth, new generation, our future, our hope. It is every parent’s responsibility to teach their kids the right path. If your child becomes a crook, people will always blame the parents and say “asa man diay liwat, kon di sa nag ligwat”. Blame will haunt and turn your grave.

Jose Rizal once preached that our country’s hope is in the youth. For more than a century we never learned from his words.

Perhaps, our country’s hope is not from present political leaders, but this person maybe playing marbles or dolls at present time.

Youth may have less experience, but their intentions are pure & focused with raw determination. Remember, Ferdinand Marcos excel at a young age, Ninoy Aquino became a great senator at 19 or 24, I don't remember.

I loved your use of words “broader horizons”. Majority of Filipinos narrowed their focus on how to deal with daily poverty and never cared about the future or other options. They will go for whatever fills their stomach in one day or the next day. Man can not live by bread alone, but a parent who sees his hungry child could not resist the lure of the devil.

What I mean social revolution is we Filipinos lack honor and discipline. Philippines compared to Japan is richer in terms of natural resources, but what made Japan a rich country is their attitude, honor and discipline.

From the looks, it may be the end of the road for GMA. In the US, even a president will cede and sacrifice his personal pride/ego for the good of his country.

I don't think either that there was ever a president in the Philippines history, not to mention the other countries, who would easily relinquish his/her throne. Since Marcos, all but Fidel Ramos (I can't remember for sure) had been threatened of ouster rallies.  Erap was the worst and yet he held on to his post until he could grip no more.

Now she does have a sucessor but is he not involved as well?

Time will only tell?

I think whatever she is doing, she doesn't care because it's her last term as President.

Reminds me when a Korean crewwed merchant ship gets a new lowwer paid crew and nationality to replace them and so just before the lowwer salaried crew members take over the Koreans would break things such as mirror's in cabin c'rs and break cabin refridgerators man was the hatred obvious for a new and incoming hands to take over, B:) I have been thinking the same thoughts also.

Then who do you think would replace her?

I don't care anymore.

It is the duty of the comelec to conduct a snap presidential election ASAP in order to save our country from further plunging below the ground.

It is irresponsibility from the part of the comelec chairman to keep silent if this is the only solution to this crisis.

The only solution I believe is the coordination between the comelec and the military to conduct a national election. If the elected president will come from the military, then it would be better. He should be disciplined and besides, we have lots of things to do which is possible only by a solid military leadership like acquiring back Sabah Malaysia by force (WAR) and second, we have to drive back the Chinese out of Spratlys Islands. We have to secure our borders, our sovereignty. Military supremacy is what makes a country.

If that happens I will re-activate my rank and volunteer.

War is allowed by God.

I salute you for being a soldier Mr.Ferniz.

But I must apologize if I say I disagree about having a military nation. O God, please no more war, we already have more than enough war in the past, it was even traumatized to think about it. Except for the revolution, fighting for our Independence, that was good enough.

Please let us avoid it if we can.

I think what you mean is a President who is firm to his word and fight from his gutt to never allow himself be fooled with corrupt politicians. You could say dictatorship but in a good way for the benefit of everybody and not just for himself.

You are right B:), war is ugly and traumatic. But war is not always killing and distruction. There is what is called the cold war where the US is engaged for decades with the Russians. It is just about securing borders, building Intercontinental Balistic Missiles (ICBM), but without firing them. It is a war of threat.

If we show to our neighbors that we have the military capability and we are not push-overs, we can be respected and become an influential nation.

First we have to secure our borders and claim what is ours.
