SOMEWHERE IN SARANGANI BAY - (August 31, 2020) – A Risso’s dolphin is spotted at the Sarangani Bay, near Malapatan and Alabel, on August 28 during the conduct of marine mammal monitoring led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sarangani and participated in by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-XII), Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC-Sarangani), City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO-Gensan), and Provincial Information Office (PIO). According to Jesriel Pantaleon of the Fisheries Management Resources of BFAR XII, “Risso’s dolphin, along with the spinner dolphin, is a frequent sighting in Sarangani Bay every time we have monitoring, which could suggest nga resident sila sa Sarangani Bay or muhawa lang sila kadali pero mubalik gihapon sila sa Bay.†“It’s also an indicator nga healthy pa ang Bay, and ang quality of water sa bay†he added. Aside from that, Pantaleon said food source could also be a reason why there is a frequent sighting of these species from last year’s monitoring up to this year. According to Pantaleon, these species are most frequently sighted especially along Malapatan and Glan “so maybe naa dira ang daghan sila makaon, like squids and fishes which are their usual diet.†Other species sighted during the monitoring include the butanding or whale shark and dugong. The marine mammal monitoring is a monthly activity of the DENR in partnership with the provincial government of Sarangani. (Jake Narte – Jori Mae Samillano/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
