Strengthening its grip in the province for the May polls, the Nacionalista Party (NP) is gaining the support of incumbent local leaders, some of whom belonging to the administration camp.
NP standard bearer and presidential candidate Senator Manuel Villar was all set to officially swear-in the party's candidates in the provincial and municipal levels yesterday but was
aborted at the last minute as inclement weather made his pilot abort yesterday's direct flight from Manila.
Leading the NP in the province are Vice Gov. Julius Herrera and former provincial administrator Tomas Abapo Jr., the party's candidates for governor
and vice governor, respectively.
A party insider disclosed to the Chronicle that at least 15 incumbent officials - mayors and vice mayors - have signified support to the NP presidential candidate.
The highly-placed source said some of these officials are running for reelection under the ruling Lakas-Kampi CMD and covertly endorsing Villar but not necessarily the NP provincial slate.
