FARMERS belonging to the Hugpong sa Mag-uuman Bol-anon (HUMABOL), an affiliate with the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), is troubled over the children of farmers, who are not interested to go on farming.
The situation also worsens since their parents are aging, said the HUMABOL statement in time of its annual conference held on June 16-17, 2011 at Cogon Cultural Center in this city in coordination and participation of ceoncerned non-government organizations and the Farmer’s Development Center, Inc (FARDEC) and attended by hundreds of its leaders from different municipal chapters and fisherfolk organizations.
The activity was held to tackle the economic and agriculture production in the province, said the statement dated signed by secretary-general Danilo Olayvar.
It said in vernacular that there are a lot of farmer’s children who are not inclined nor motivated to go on farming because of sad state of farming and an economic situation of old farmers, and worse, the land they toil are not theirs.
The number of youthtaking up agriculture or related courses has been diminishing in recent years, the Department of Agriculture noted. This prompted the new administration to woo them by offering scholarships and subsidies to study agriculture.
HUMABOL bats for what they called a progressive piece of legislation, the House Bill 3105 or Rice Industry Development Act House Bill 3105 or Rice Industry Development Act strongly indorsed by party-list Anakpawis, the statement said.
It said HUmabol also believes that pushing for the enactment of a law or House Bill No. 374, or the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill, is the answer to the genuine land reform so that the country can move forward for genuine development. (RVO)
